Download or read book The Dark Side of the Island written by Jack Higgins and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2010-06-22 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former WWII intelligence agent searches for redemption in this thriller by the New York Times–bestselling author of The Midnight Bell. It’s been nearly twenty years since Hugh Lomax set foot on the Greek island of Kyros. During World War II, British Intelligence sent him there on a mission to take out a high-tech German radar station. Aided by the local resistance, he succeeded—but was also captured and spent the rest of the war imprisoned. Now, he’s returned. But he is far from welcome. When he reunites with someone he thought an old friend, the man threatens to kill him. The local authorities make it clear that he should leave and never come back. Because although he thought he had helped save Kyros, Lomax soon learns that his former comrades believe he turned traitor in captivity—a betrayal that cost many lives. Unwilling to live with the betrayal, Lomax must delve into the violent past and dig into the unfamiliar present to find the man who stained his name with the blood of his friends. But this secret enemy is still watching his every move, waiting to silence him forever . . . Written before his novel The Eagle Has Landed took the world by storm, Jack Higgins’s adventure of war and treachery showcases his absolute mastery of combining plot, action, and vividly drawn characters into the perfect thriller.

Download or read book Writing the Dark Side of Travel written by Jonathan Skinner and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The travel experience filled with personal trauma; the pilgrimage through a war-torn place; the journey with those suffering: these represent the darker sides of travel. What is their allure and how are they represented? This volume takes an ethnographic and interdisciplinary approach to explore the writings and texts of dark journeys and travels. In traveling over the dead, amongst the dying, and alongside the suffering, the authors give us a tour of humanity’s violence and misery. And yet, from this dark side, there comes great beauty and poignancy in the characterization of plight; creativity in the comic, graphic, and graffiti sketches and comments on life; and the sense of profound and spiritual journeys being undertaken, recorded, and memorialized.

Book The Dark Side of European Integration

Download or read book The Dark Side of European Integration written by Alina Polyakova and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Europe, radical right-wing parties are winning increasing electoral support. The Dark Side of European Integration argues that this rising nationalism and the mobilization of the radical right are the consequences of European economic integration. The European economic project has produced a cultural backlash in the form of nationalist radical right ideologies. This assessment relies on a detailed analysis of the electoral rise of radical right parties in Western and Eastern Europe. Contrary to popular belief, economic performance and immigration rates are not the only factors that determine the far right's success. There are other political and social factors that explain why in post-socialist Eastern European countries such parties had historically been weaker than their potential, which they have now started to fulfill increasingly. Using in-depth interviews with radical right activists in Ukraine, Alina Polyakova also explores how radical right mobilization works on the ground through social networks, allowing new insights into how social movements and political parties interact.

Iraqi women and girls are being shipped to oil-rich Arab countries for sexual exploitation. The American and British authorities in Baghdad forbid Gray to meddle in the affairs of “friends” of Washington and London. For Gray, the choice is simple. He takes the perilous step into the dark Iraqi underworld where the huge profits generated by assassination-for-hire and sexual exploitation are fueling religious extremism, and will become the future funding base for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Welcome to the Dark Side is the face-paced prequel to Maggie May, dealing with Marvin Gray’s battles with alcoholism, forbidden romances with Arab women, and failed attempts to protect the innocent.

Book The Dark Side of Statius Achilleid

Download or read book The Dark Side of Statius Achilleid written by Julene Abad Del Vecchio and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dark Side of Statius' Achilleid explores systematically and for the first time the darker aspects of Statius' Achilleid, bringing to light the poem's tragic and epic dimensions. By seeking to position at centre-stage these darker elements, the book offers several new readings of the Achilleid in relation to its literary inheritance, its gender dynamics, and its generic tensions. This volume delves beneath the surface of a story that ostensibly deals with a light subject matter—the cross-dressing of a young Achilles on Scyros—to offer an in-depth examination of the poem's relationship to its epic and tragic precursors, and to explore its more serious themes. It is shown to challenge traditional epic narratives, examine Achilles' complex familial relationships and his deviant and transgressive heroism, highlight the tragic character of Thetis, and provide glimpses of the horrors that the cataclysmic Trojan War will beget. By looking into Statius' wide-ranging dialogue with his literary predecessors, such as Homer, Sophocles, Virgil, Ovid, Lucan, and Seneca, as well as Statius' previous epic magnum opus, the Thebaid, the multidimensional characterisations of Achilles and other of the poem's key characters, such as Ulysses, Calchas, and Thetis are investigated. Far from simply representing a shameful but essentially humorous cross-dressing episode in Achilles' life that is destined to be forgotten, the Achilleid can be seen to challenge the very fabric of epic by probing the validity and authority of its literary tradition, as well as highlighting its highly innovative and experimental nature.
