Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated About The Fall Of The House Of Usher: By Edgar Allan Poe The story begins with the unnamed narrator arriving at the house of his friend, Roderick Usher, having received a letter from him in a distant part of the country complaining of an illness and asking for his help. As he arrives, the narrator notes a thin crack extending from the roof, down the front of the building and into the lake. Although Poe wrote this short story before the invention of modern psychological science, Roderick's condition can be described according to its terminology. It includes a form of sensory overload known as hyperesthesia (hypersensitivity to textures, light, sounds, smells and tastes), hypochondria (an excessive preoccupation or worry about having a serious illness) and acute anxiety. It is revealed that Roderick's twin sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances. The narrator is impressed with Roderick's paintings, and attempts to cheer him by reading with him and listening to his improvised musical compositions on the guitar. Roderick sings "The Haunted Palace", then tells the narrator that he believes the house he lives in to be alive, and that this sentience arises from the arrangement of the masonry and vegetation surrounding it.

Book excerpt: In my youth I would watch the ushers at church and thought it would be neat to usher. It didn't look hard and I'd get to greet everyone. When I got old enough I volunteered and was hooked. After I was married and moved to the big city, the church I attend was very large, and like most churches they needed ushers. I was promoted very quickly and the responsibility didn't bother me. Then I was drawn to a new daughter church. This was a challenge, a brand new church. I offered what I could. When things got settled I was running one of the services. When the Head ushers spot came open I didn't think I was ready, so I prayed about it. A calmness came over me and I knew then it was what God wanted me to do.' David Foos, Head Usher, Canyon Hills Community Church, Bothell, Washington

Book Warm Socks

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child, teenager, and young adult Edna didn't realize the value of the gifts God had given her. She felt she had been cheated out of everything life had to offer her, wanting to be socially compatible with the "elite people" even though she didn't know anything about their character. Since her daddy, Berkeley Herbert Brown, had the responsibility of taking care of his family, Edna believed he hadn't fulfilled his role as the provider because she didn't get the things she wanted as a child. One day while she was waiting in the Internal Medicine Clinic, Edna connected with a stranger who was anxious to share her heartbreaking story. The stranger's story made Edna reflect on her upbringing and the values she was taught from her father. Edna's challenges were replaced with an appreciation of the gifts God had given her through her parents, and she recalled good memories of her happy childhood and teenage life with her father and mother. She realized it wasn't about what her father had given her, but how he had taught her to have a happy life and fulfilled purpose.

Book excerpt: Philosophically speaking, Zion is a discovery of spirituality, an aspiration to be free of worldly desires when seeking truth and righteousness and salvation through Jesus Christ. The world can be disappointing. In the light, beyond mortal understanding are signs of true immortality, glimpses of heavens dew that appears to be cheated, yet rewarding because Christ is evident through the Word of God and Zions faith. She was used and abused by so many, such as her parents, her paramours, her neighbors, her former employer, to even that of the legal system that is supposed to be circumcised within the law. Her rights were violated, and there was nothing she could do but trust God. She is in the law while out of the system as the system appears to be lawless. Zion within solitude is free to understand what her strongholds are. While Christ is within, she submerges from them with the help of her friend Jeremiah. Both have a fetish for Asian culture, philosophical discourse, and a calling only God can sustain. Through Zions revelations from beginning to end, such as the falls, the floods, the great escapes, and the promise, are all made into fruition.

Book The Dark Side of the Millennium

Download or read book The Dark Side of the Millennium written by Arthur Lewis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-01-07 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Lewis proposes that the evil inherent in the conditions of Revelation 20:1-10 precludes its identity with the glorious kingdom of Christ which is to come. Through comparative studies in the Old Testament, the Gospels, and the Epistles, he demonstrates that the millennial scene best fits into this present age, spanning the time between the first and second comings. Labeling his view "historical millennialism," the author offers a fresh form of the older, orthodox positions of amillennialism. Lewis's view, however, remains distinctive in that he does not spiritualize away the basic features belonging to the thousand years of Revelation 20. Though written in 1980, this volume continues to fill a present lack among evangelicals for materials to judge fairly the amillennial perspective long held by orthodox churches and great theologians of the past, including Augustine. While interpreters of Revelation 20 agree that the millennium will mix good and evil, saint and sinners, Lewis stands among just a few who seriously explore the implications of this fact. This new edition also includes an interview with the author that covers his broader dialogue with dispensationalism.

But he can’t predict the atmospheric pressure awaiting him: The town his family founded has become the center of the Transcendental Meditation movement and host to all things alternative. There are mass meditations and dosha discussions, a vegan cafe has replaced the burger joint, and all the doors now face east. Far worse, however, is what the meditating mayor has planned for the Martin family’s farm. In a town divided between “Regulars” and “Roos” (gurus), Owen is sure where he stands—until he falls for a levitating yogi. Before he knows it, he’s caught in a veritable tornado of midwesternness vs. mindfulness. Can he save the farm, get the girl, and reunite the town? Maybe . . . if he’s willing to forecast a change in the weather.
