Book Leadership Work and the Dark Side of Personality

Download or read book Leadership Work and the Dark Side of Personality written by Seth M. Spain and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-02-16 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership, Work, and the Dark Side of Personality uses an interpersonal psychological perspective to unite general theories of both personality and leadership. By focusing in on the interpersonal, the book characterizes social behaviors by their agency (how dominant they are) and by their communion (how relational and nurturing they are). It argues that these interpersonal dimensions align closely with the traditional structure of leader behaviors—both task-related and relationship oriented behaviors—and uses those frameworks to orient trait theory for both normal-range personality traits and subclinical (dark side) traits. After overviewing the history of leadership theory, reviewing normal range personality traits (Extraversion, Neuroticism, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Openness) and subclinical traits, such as the Dark Triad (Narcissism, Machiavellianism and Psychopathy), the book moves on to thoroughly bring the perspective of interpersonal psychology to bear on questions of personality and leadership, and ends by narrowing in on how the dark side of personality affects the leadership process—for better and for worse. Discusses the role of personality in job performance and satisfaction Critiques both historical and contemporary leadership approaches Includes lesser known approaches to leadership, such as paternalism and empowerment Narrows in on the dark side of personality and the role it plays in the leadership process Distinguishes between effective leaders and successful leaders

McIntosh and Rima offer a series of steps for leaders to consider so they can take control of their dark side and learn to harness its creative powers. Book The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership

Download or read book The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership written by Dennis Tourish and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most research into leadership has presented leaders as heroic, charismatic and transformational 'visionaries'. The leader, whether in business, politics or any other field, is the most important factor in determining whether organizations succeed or fail. Indeed, despite the fundamental mistakes which have, arguably, directly led to global economic recession, it is often still taken for granted that transformational leadership is a good thing, and that leaders should have much more power than followers to decide what needs to be done. The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership confronts this orthodoxy by illustrating how such approaches can encourage narcissism, megalomania and poor decision-making on the part of leaders, at great expense to those organizations they are there to serve. Written in a lively and engaging style, the book uses a number of case studies to illustrate the perils of transformational leadership, from the Jonestown tragedy in 1978 when over 900 people were either murdered or committed suicide at the urging of their leader, to an analysis of how banking executives tried to explain away their role in the 2008 financial crisis This provocative and hugely important book offers a rare critical perspective in the field of leadership studies. Concluding with a new approach that offers an alternative to the dominant transformational model, The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership will be an invaluable text for academics interested in leadership, students on leadership courses requiring a more critical perspective, and anyone concerned with how people lead people, and the lessons we can learn.

But shady local businessmen had other ideas. Mr Big muscled in, and embroiled them with his henchmen. Why do good intentions go awry? With brutally honest humor, Daniel recounts his journey to the edge, and a desperate drug-fuelled quest for the truth. Book THE DARK SIDE OF LEADERSHIP

Download or read book THE DARK SIDE OF LEADERSHIP written by Dr Tessie Herbst and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the fact that leaders do indeed affect the performance of organizations or the well-being of society for better or worse--to cast either a shadow or light by the exercise of their leadership. Modern psychology with its theories of human behavior, which does not acknowledge the existence of the spiritual realm, cannot explain the carnage and evil often associated with the dark side of leadership. This book focuses on the dark side of leadership in a multidimensional manner and provides a psychospiritual approach toward understanding personality disorders and leader derailment. It highlights an area that has not been exclusively studied by leadership researchers to date--the influence of spiritual forces in personality disorders, which lead to leadership failure and derailment. This book calls for a more interdisciplinary approach and holistic understanding of the dark side of leadership, inseparably relating body, soul, and spirit as they function individually and relationally. It highlights the fact that the restoration of personality will require sustained dialogue between theologians and the medical and psychological professions. This book provides solid information and new insights for anyone seeking to understand the dark side of leadership.

Book Dark Side Leadership

Download or read book Dark Side Leadership written by Nick Tarant and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lewinsky scandals, Major League performance-enhancers, and falling pop-stars aside, Western culture has historically glorified its socio-political leaders and protected the topic of leadership as a virtuous and altruistic element on some traditionalist's pedestal. This book is a cunning and frank departure from that old-school philosophy. Be prepared for a serious exploration of today's unabridged and blurred-line leadership, as defined by the tongue-in-cheek commentary of one of America's rising stars in the topical arena. Laden with analysis of villains from Saddam Hussein to Jeffrey Dahmer, and peppered with analogies featuring bad Brad Pitt films and corporate failures, Dark Side Leadership is a new topic for boardrooms and bars alike that is set in a smart and editorial style. It is recommended reading for anyone anticipating the 'hope and change' of the 21st Century, or debating a raid of petty cash at the same time. Aside from that, it is conventional, yet intellectual fun. www.darksideleadership.com

Download or read book Medical Leadership written by Peter Spurgeon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Successful medical leaders are usually, but not always, experienced and credible clinicians with good people skills, who look beyond the boundaries of their own specialty or institution, who are positive and perseverant and who are prepared to take reasonable risks to achieve their goals. Most importantly they know how to engage their colleagues and effect change. They understand the principles of organisational performance and the balance between professional autonomy and corporate behaviour - ' Sir Bruce Keogh, in the Foreword This book is a comprehensive account of the key aspects of medical leadership. Easy to read and highly accessible, it explores how the medical profession has evolved in tandem with administrative and structural aspects of the NHS: previously reluctant leaders, doctors are increasingly positive about adopting management and organisational responsibility. Assuming leadership roles at all stages of their training and career is a progressively vital component of the definition of a 'good doctor'. Completely up-to-date, this book features exciting and critical developments such as the embedding of the Medical Leadership Competency Framework as a statutory element of the training and development of all doctors, and the establishment of a new Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. It is highly recommended, inspiring reading for all medical professionals taking on formal leadership roles. Junior doctors, too, will find much of interest.
