But something evil, ancient and unknowable gnaws at the heart of the empire. Dark gods, trapped for centuries in thrice-warded tombs, have been disturbed by Roman plunderers. A secret war is fought daily between those who would harness this strange power for themselves, and those who fear it signals the very end of the empire. Across the sea, roused from eternal slumber by a world awash with war, by omens and pagan slaughter, a Great Old One waits for the way to be opened. A cosmic terror that man was not meant to know. Those who know its name tremble, and only the very brave-or very foolish-incant it for their own ends. They whisper it in darkness; they cry it from atop blasted hills; they scream it to the raging oceans. “Cthulhu...”

Book excerpt: Culled from nearly a decade of work, Dark Draughts is the first collection of John Goodrich’s short fiction. Discover a terrifying new god, and an old, well known one just as malicious. Encounter horror tropes broken and remade; dead and undead pharaohs, a compassionate ghoul, and a serial killer who discovers something darker than himself. Find out what happens to a man literally at war with himself. With stories set in Arkham, ancient Egypt, the blood-soaked battlefields of World War One, rural Vermont, and a hideous apocalyptic future, these stories encompass the terrors of the past as well as our fears for the future. Dark Draughts: Strong medicine for what ails us all. *** "With Dark Draughts, John Goodrich casts a new, clear-eyed vision of horror. Revitalizing familiar tropes with new energy, he brings a fresh, dark sensibility to his writing." — Richard Dansky, author of Firefly Rain "Goodrich's writing shines bright, but never brighter than when he's probing the dark corners of history or plumbing the depths of unexpected venues for horror." — Errick A. Nunnally, author of Blood for the Sun "Caveat lector: Dark Draughts is sixteen unnerving little tales that, like an occult text, compel you to keep reading long past the point of safety. With his self-assured writing and intimate knowledge of history, John Goodrich reminds us that evil is real, has been here all along, and worse, has plans for us." — Dana Cameron, author of the Fangborn series John Goodrich’s Dark Draughts has all the soul of the shudder pulps, and a strong, beating modern heart. He captures the adventure of the classic thrilling tale while crafting believable characters with real sympathy. From World War I flying aces, to the modern zombie menace in the corn fields, to a God of Chickens, and an occult gathering that puts a man face to face with an eldritch god, Goodrich proves again and again that he is the kind of craftsman who understands the last line of a story is every bit as important as the first. — Bracken MacLeod, Bram Stoker Award nominated author of Stranded and Come to Dust "John Goodrich is an experienced world-traveler of the weird, a savvy and capable tour guide moving smoothly among settings and eras, effortlessly crossing both the borders of genre and the boundaries of sanity." — Christine Morgan, author of The Raven’s Table and Spermjackers From Hell “Dark Draughts will burn your throat and disturb your sleep. From the dusty American West to the blood-soaked battle fields of WWI, from ancient Egypt to rural Vermont, John Goodrich shines a ghastly light on our human insecurities and lizard-brain impulses. He has a flair for Lovecraftian horror worthy of the master himself, and mines the canon of terror tropes in original, witty, nightmarish ways. With tales sure to delight horror aficionados and novice fans alike, Dark Draughts will make you think twice before turning out the lights.” — Shawn MacKenzie, Author of The Dragon Keeper’s Handbook and Dragons for Beginners

Download or read book Gothicka written by Victoria Nelson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To explain the millennial shift away from the traditionally dark Protestant post-Enlightenment Gothic, Nelson studies the complex arena of contemporary Gothic subgenres that take the form of novels, films, and graphic novels. She considers the work of Dan Brown and Stephenie Meyer, graphic novelists Mike Mignola and Garth Ennis, Christian writer William P. Young (author of The Shack), and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. She considers twentieth-century Gothic masters H.P. Lovecraft, Anne Rice, and Stephen King in light of both their immediate ancestors in the eighteenth century and the original Gothic--the late medieval period from which Horace Walpole and his successors drew their inspiration. Fictions such as the Twilight and Left Behind series do more than follow the conventions of the classic Gothic novel. They are radically reviving and reinventing the transcendental worldview that informed the West's premodern era. As Jesus becomes mortal in The Da Vinci Code and the child Ofelia becomes a goddess in Pan's Labyrinth, Nelson argues that this unprecedented mainstreaming of a spiritually driven supernaturalism is a harbinger of what a post-Christian religion in America might look like.

Book excerpt: One of the most famous – yet least understood – manifestations of Thelemic thought has been the works of Kenneth Grant, the British occultist and one-time intimate of Aleister Crowley, who discovered a hidden world within the primary source materials of Crowley’s Aeon of Horus. Using complementary texts from such disparate authors as H.P. Lovecraft, Jack Parsons, Austin Osman Spare, and Charles Stansfeld Jones (“Frater Achad”), Grant formulated a system of magic that expanded upon that delineated in the rituals of the OTO: a system that included elements of Tantra, of Voudon, and in particular that of the Schlangekraft recension of the Necronomicon, all woven together in a dark tapestry of power and illumination. The Dark Lord follows the themes in the writings of Kenneth Grant, H.P. Lovecraft, and the Necronomicon, uncovering further meanings of the concepts of the famous writers of the Left Hand Path. It is for Thelemites, as well as lovers of the Lovecraft Mythos in all its forms, and for those who find the rituals of classical ceremonial magic inadequate for the New Aeon. Traveling through the worlds of religion, literature, and the occult, Peter Levenda takes his readers on a deeply fascinating exploration on magic, evil, and The Dark Lord as he investigates of one of the most neglected theses in the history of modern occultism: the nature of the Typhonian Current and its relationship to Aleister Crowley’s Thelema and H.P. Lovecraft’s Necronomicon.

Book excerpt: TechGnosis is a cult classic of media studies that straddles the line between academic discourse and popular culture; it appeals to both those secular and spiritual, to fans of cyberpunk and hacker literature and culture as much as new-thought adherents and spiritual seekers How does our fascination with technology intersect with the religious imagination? In TechGnosis—a cult classic now updated and reissued with a new afterword—Erik Davis argues that while the realms of the digital and the spiritual may seem worlds apart, esoteric and religious impulses have in fact always permeated (and sometimes inspired) technological communication. Davis uncovers startling connections between such seemingly disparate topics as electricity and alchemy; online roleplaying games and religious and occult practices; virtual reality and gnostic mythology; programming languages and Kabbalah. The final chapters address the apocalyptic dreams that haunt technology, providing vital historical context as well as new ways to think about a future defined by the mutant intermingling of mind and machine, nightmare and fantasy.

Book Rites of the Mummy

Download or read book Rites of the Mummy written by Jeffrey D. Evans and published by Nicolas-Hays, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An arcane ritual reveals a code hidden within Thelema’s most holy book. Over a period of several years, the former head of Kenneth Grant’s Typhonian Order in the United States, conducted a bizarre sexual ritual with elements of Thelema, Lovecraft, and the Egyptian mummification ceremony to unlock a mathematical code buried in plain sight in Aleister Crowley’s Book of the Law. Jeffrey Evans, a follower of Aleister Crowley’s Thelema since his teenage years, had an encounter on a bridge in Washington, DC, with a being he identified as his holy guardian angel. This being—Karla—provided him with the inspiration to begin a series of rituals incorporating Egyptian and Lovecraftian elements in an effort to traverse the Tunnels of Set: pathways on the “dark side” of the Qabalistic Tree of Life. The ritual, conducted with his wife, Ruth Keenan, employed cross-dressing and bondage as well as Cthulhian imagery and chanting, and resulted in a series of revelations concerning the mathematical code hidden within the verses of Crowley’s Book of the Law: a circumstance that Crowley always suspected but was never able to prove, not even with the help of accomplished mathematicians. Evans tried in vain to demonstrate this code to other members of the Typhonian Order, to no avail, but a chance meeting online with Peter Levenda resulted in Levenda’s taking a closer look at the data and what he discovered astounded him. He agreed to help bring this discovery to the attention of the general public. There has been very little new work published in the field of Thelema in the last 10 years or so, at least since the death of Kenneth Grant. Most publishing concerning Crowley has been biographical or reissues of Crowley’s own material. This work is a departure from all of that. It is new material, completely unexpected within the Crowley/Thelema/OTO environment, for it offers a new approach to the mathematical nature of Thelema that so far has been based on Qabalah. This work brings attention to the existence of a sacred geometry within the verses of the Book of the Law: a completely unexpected discovery but nonetheless mathematically verifiable. It bridges the gap between Thelema, Freemasonry, and Templarism, as well as Gnosticism, demonstrating a continuum of esoteric thought spanning millennia.

Book H P Lovecraft s Dark Arcadia

Download or read book H P Lovecraft s Dark Arcadia written by Gavin Callaghan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume attempts an objective reassessment of the controversial works and life of American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. Ignoring secondary accounts and various received truths, Gavin Callaghan goes back to the weird texts themselves, and follows where Lovecraft leads him: into an arcane world of parental giganticism and inverted classicism, in which Lovecraft's parental obsessions were twisted into the all-powerful cosmic monsters of his imaginary cosmology.
