Book Sustaining Export Oriented Development

Download or read book Sustaining Export Oriented Development written by Ross Garnaut and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-09-29 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1995, looks at the East Asian economies' post-war development and assesses the possibilities of transferring East Asian development elsewhere. Written and edited by economists, Sustaining Export-Oriented Development traces the changes in the thinking of policy makers and advisers about the policies required for economic development - especially the changed emphasis from import-substitution to outward-orientation which coincided with the East Asian economies' success. Several contributors focus on identifying the key factors in the growth of these dynamic economies. Others look at future constraints such as the environmental limits to growth and the sustainability of export growth in China. This book makes a significant contribution to the discussion of economic growth and development issues and will be of interest to those in economics, trade and aid, and others concerned with public policy.

Book The World Trading System at Risk

Download or read book The World Trading System at Risk written by Jagdish N. Bhagwati and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jagdish Bhagwati, one of the world's leading economists, offers a fascinating overview of the perils and promise facing the world trading system. That system is now being subjected to powerful centrifugal forces. Concerns with unfair trade are rampant, managed trade is increasingly popular, and regionalism is spreading. The United States, the traditional bulwark of multilateralism, has recently resorted to aggressive, unilateral tactics in trade policy. To a consideration of these developments, Bhagwati brings a unique blend of economic theory, historical scholarship, and familiarity with the institutions of world trade. Bhagwati refutes facile but fashionable criticisms of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Warning of the dangers of flouting the GATT's provisions, he shows that its underlying conception of trading by rules will be undermined if we extend accusations of "unfair trade" practices to areas as diverse as retail distribution systems, infrastructure spending, saving rates, and workers' rights. He challenges the economic and cultural stereotypes of Japan that fuel the sentiments supporting managed trade and aggressive unilateralism. In addition, he provides novel suggestions for rebuilding the GATT and with it the world trading system itself--suggestions that should prove useful at the Uruguay Round and beyond. Book FDI Regionalism Government Policy and Endogenous Growth

Download or read book FDI Regionalism Government Policy and Endogenous Growth written by Anthony Bende-Nabende and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999, this text investigates whether FDI caused spill over effects which have led to the economic growth of the ASEAN-5 economies, and if that it so, whether the ASEAN Preferential Trade Agreement (APTA) had a significant effect in attracting FDI to the region. It takes into account the different levels of economic development of the countries under analysis. The results from the structural (static) model suggest that FDI has stimulated economic growth through the human factors followed by technology transfer, international trade, and learning by doing, and that the formation of APTA had a lagged influence on FDI inflows into the advantage of the more developed member countries and the disadvantage of the less developed countries. Those from the multiplier (dynamic) effects analysis demonstrate that whereas the impact is immediate in the more developed, politically stable and foreign investment friendly economies, there is a time lag in those economies which are less developed and more hostile to FDI. The analysis presents an empirical comparison of how the level of economic development affects the interaction of FDI, regionalism and economic growth.

Book Shortcut or Piecemeal

Download or read book Shortcut or Piecemeal written by Jan Winiecki and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative strategies of economic development have received little attention in the literature. Academics rarely compare certain strategic features or assess the performance of different strategies in terms of outcomes. This book seeks to address that gap and to provide a theoretical background to the shift from industry to human capital-intensive services as the engine of economic growth. Pioneering studies reveal interesting trends and patterns that point to the growing importance of intangible capital for the level of GDP. They also indicate a much greater role of economic freedom in bringing about this second great structural change than was the case with industrialization. With this perspective on structural change and the role of freedom, Shortcut or Piecemeal also provides an extensive assessment of four key developing countries: Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Subjects: 1. Central planning—History. 2. Economic development—History

Book Global Economic Prospects 2007

Download or read book Global Economic Prospects 2007 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next 25 years developing countries will move to center stage in the global economy. Global Economic Prospects 2007 analyzes the opportunities - and stresses - this will create. While rich and poor countries alike stand to benefit, the integration process will make more acute stresses already apparent today - in income inequality, in labor markets, and in the environment. Over the next 25 years, rapid technological progress, burgeoning trade in goods and services, and integration of financial markets create the opportunity for faster long-term growth. However, some regions, notably Africa, are at risk of being left behind. The coming globalization will also see intensified stresses on the "global commons." Addressing global warming, preserving marine fisheries, and containing infectious diseases will require effective multilateral collaboration to ensure that economic growth and poverty reduction proceed without causing irreparable harm to future generations."
