Book The Damage Tolerance of Teeth

Download or read book The Damage Tolerance of Teeth written by Amir Barani Lonbani and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] This thesis is concerned with the fracture analysis of cracks in the teeth of different species. The main focus is on finding a link between the resistance to failure by fracture and the key geometrical features of the tooth, with particular reference to its radius, height and enamel thickness. The analysis is applied to short, rounded 'bunodont' molars typical of humans and other primates; elongated, columnar 'hypsodont' molars of ruminants and the elongated, tapered canine teeth of predators. Fracture morphologies include longitudinal cracks resulting from direct occlusal loading on bunodont and hypsodont crowns, and transverse cracking of the canine resulting from lateral loading. The study was carried out by applying numerical (extended finite element method (XFEM)), experimental and analytical fracture mechanics analyses resulting in simplified analytical equations for failure load in terms of the key parameters. The ability to model the failure of a particular tooth structure allows us to predict the maximum biting force that can be applied by the animal. The existing fracture patterns in the dentition of extant animals and also in fossil records show particular damage patterns that can also be analysed to determine the magnitude and type of load that caused the damage. Hence, the result of this research can be applied by anthropologists and paleoanthropologists help understand the evolutionary route of the species. Although the geometrical features of teeth in different mammalian species vary widely, available data suggests that the mechanical properties for the component materials (enamel, dentin) do not vary greatly. Nevertheless, the impact of microstructure cannot be neglected. The modelling has therefore also tested the relevance of local spatial variations in material properties within the enamel (stiffness and toughness) and material anisotropy. It is believed that many well developed cracks in teeth originate from pre-existing flaws in the enamel ('tufts') at the enamel-dentin junction (EDJ). Therefore, a two dimensional XFEM crack propagation in a region close to occlusal surface was implemented to study the effect of enamel anisotropy on the growth of tufts across the enamel thickness evolution from EDJ. The analysis was performed for both isotropic and orthotropic material properties for comparison. A higher crack driving force was observed in the isotropic material, indicating that anisotropy may be important, at least in the early stages of tuft growth. The next phase of our study was to consider the evolution of a longitudinal crack emanating from a small starting crack either at a cusp (radial crack) or at the base (margin crack) of a bunodont crown, under simulated occlusal loading. It is shown that both forms of crack behave in similar ways once well established, leading to ribbon-like channel (longitudinal) cracks that run up or down the sidewall of the tooth. The entire history (load-length) of the crack can be calculated, leading to simple explicit equations that link the critical failure load to the important tooth geometrical characteristics...

Book Material Tissue Interfacial Phenomena

Download or read book Material Tissue Interfacial Phenomena written by Paulette Spencer and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material-Tissue Interfacial Phenomena: Contributions from Dental and Craniofacial Reconstructions explores the material/tissue interfacial phenomena using dental and craniofacial reconstructions as a model system. As the mouth is a particularly caustic environment, the synthetic and/or bio-enabled materials used to repair damaged tissues and restore form, function, and esthetics to oral structures must resist a variety of physical, chemical, and mechanical challenges. These challenges are magnified at the interface between dissimilar structures such as the tooth/material interface. Interfacial reactions at the atomic, molecular, and nano-scales initiate the failure of materials used to repair, restore, and reconstruct dental and craniofacial tissues. Understanding the phenomena that lead to failure at the interface between dissimilar structures, such as synthetic materials and biologic tissues, is confounded by a variety of factors that are thoroughly discussed in this comprehensive book. Provides a specific focus on the oral environment Combines clinical views and basic science into a useful reference book Presents comprehensive coverage of material-interfacial phenomena within the oral environment

Book Biomimetic Principles and Design of Advanced Engineering Materials

Download or read book Biomimetic Principles and Design of Advanced Engineering Materials written by Zhenhai Xia and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the structure-property-process relationship of biomaterials from engineering and biomedical perspectives, and the potential of bio-inspired materials and their applications. A large variety of natural materials with outstanding physical and mechanical properties have appeared in the course of evolution. From a bio-inspired viewpoint, materials design requires a novel and highly cross disciplinary approach. Considerable benefits can be gained by providing an integrated approach using bio-inspiration with materials science and engineering. The book is divided into three parts; Part One focuses on mechanical aspects, dealing with conventional material properties: strength, toughness, hardness, wear resistance, impact resistance, self-healing, adhesion, and adaptation and morphing. Part Two focuses on functional materials with unique capabilities, such as self-cleaning, stimuli-response, structural color, anti-reflective materials, catalytic materials for clean energy conversion and storage, and other related topics. Part Three describes how to mimic natural materials processes to synthesize materials with low cost, efficient and environmentally friendly approaches. For each chapter, the approach is to describe situations in nature first and then biomimetic materials, fulfilling the need for an interdisciplinary approach which overlaps both engineering and materials science.

Book Mineral Tolerance of Animals

Download or read book Mineral Tolerance of Animals written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-22 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excess minerals in the diet and water of animals can have an adverse effect on animal health, consumers, and the environment. Preventing unsafe mineral exposure is a fundamental part of animal nutrition and management. At the request of the Food and Drug Administration, the National Academies convened a committee to make recommendations on animal tolerances and toxic dietary levels, updating a 1980 report on mineral tolerance in domestic animals. Based on a review of current scientific data and information, the report sets a "maximum tolerable level" (MTL) for each mineral as it applies to the diets of farm animals, poultry, and fish. The report includes an analysis of the effects of toxic levels in animal diets, and it identifies elements that pose potential human health concerns. The report recommends research that includes a better characterization of animal exposure to minerals through feedstuffs; a better understanding of the relationship between mineral concentrations in feed and water and the levels in consumer products such as meat, milk, and eggs; and more research on the maximum tolerable level of minerals for aquatic and companion animals.
