Its main street was Rob and Marlo's play ground. They watched the Steamers, arriving from St. Louis. unloading the passengers. The boardwalks alive with tappers, miners, soldiers, and Indians. They were downtown, the day the Sharndo gang rode into town. Turned out the gang had robbed the gold shipment from the steamer, Dakota. They got a room at the Johnson Hotel to lie low for awhile. Having drank too much whiskey one evening, the gang freely talks of their robbery and pass around a map, where the gold is buried. Marlo, ever the adventure seeker, and Rob, whom she dragged along, find the window of the gang's room. Kids have big eyes and ears. Beneath the window, they see and hear everything. Next day when the kids know that the Sharndo gang is drinking in a local bar, Marlo sneaks through the unlocked window and retrieves the map. They study the map and find, to their delight, that the gold is hidden in the White Cliffs badlands, along the Missouri River. Keeping this a secret, they decide to recover the gold. They build a raft and head on down the Missouri, on an exciting, bold mission. With the Sharndo gang hot on their trail and a run in with a Blackfoot hunting party, will they make it to the Gold's hiding place and return safely home? Find out in Dakota Gold.

Book An Alaskan Adventure

Download or read book An Alaskan Adventure written by Frederick James Currier and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the descendant of early miners, a grandfather who prospected for gold in the Fairbanks area in 1908 and a father who mined from the 1920s through the early 1940s, my interest and fascination with Frederick Currier's manuscript was easily spiked. Currier's quest for gold from 1893 into the 1900s was an admirable pursuit. His account of prospecting ventures in 1898 on the Chena River near Fairbanks is spellbinding, especially in his use of a sternwheeler and his building of cabins as he prospected toward the headwaters. I have great admiration for the early gold prospectors like Frederick Currier since I have sunk a couple of shafts to bedrock with a windlass and know the effort and determination required. The power of a few nuggets can change a person's direction in life. Currier's, An Alaskan Adventure, is well worth reading—more than once.

Book The Farmer s Lawyer

Download or read book The Farmer s Lawyer written by Sarah Vogel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a new foreword by Willie Nelson "An exquisitely written American saga." --Sarah Smarsh The "remarkably well told and heartfelt" (John Grisham) story of a young lawyer's impossible legal battle to stop the federal government from foreclosing on thousands of family farmers. In the early 1980s, farmers were suffering through the worst economic crisis to hit rural America since the Great Depression. Land prices were down, operating costs and interest rates were up, and severe weather devastated crops. Instead of receiving assistance from the government as they had in the 1930s, these hardworking family farmers were threatened with foreclosure by the very agency that Franklin Delano Roosevelt created to help them. Desperate, they called Sarah Vogel in North Dakota. Sarah, a young lawyer and single mother, listened to farmers who were on the verge of losing everything and, inspired by the politicians who had helped farmers in the '30s, she naively built a solo practice of clients who couldn't afford to pay her. Sarah began drowning in debt and soon her own home was facing foreclosure. In a David and Goliath legal battle reminiscent of A Civil Action or Erin Brockovich, Sarah brought a national class action lawsuit, which pitted her against the Reagan administration's Department of Justice, in her fight for family farmers' Constitutional rights. It was her first case. A courageous American story about justice and holding the powerful to account, The Farmer's Lawyer shows how the farm economy we all depend on for our daily bread almost fell apart due to the willful neglect of those charged to protect it, and what we can learn from Sarah's battle as a similar calamity looms large on our horizon once again.

Book One Size Fits None

Download or read book One Size Fits None written by Stephanie Anderson and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sustainable” has long been the rallying cry of agricultural progressives; given that much of our nation’s farm and ranch land is already degraded, however, sustainable agriculture often means maintaining a less-than-ideal status quo. Industrial agriculture has also co-opted the term for marketing purposes without implementing better practices. Stephanie Anderson argues that in order to provide nutrient-rich food and fight climate change, we need to move beyond sustainable to regenerative agriculture, a practice that is highly tailored to local environments and renews resources. In One Size Fits None Anderson follows diverse farmers across the United States: a South Dakota bison rancher who provides an alternative to the industrial feedlot; an organic vegetable farmer in Florida who harvests microgreens; a New Mexico super-small farmer who revitalizes communities; and a North Dakota midsize farmer who combines livestock and grain farming to convert expensive farmland back to native prairie. The use of these nontraditional agricultural techniques show how varied operations can give back to the earth rather than degrade it. This book will resonate with anyone concerned about the future of food in America, providing guidance for creating a better, regenerative agricultural future. Download a discussion guide (PDF).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost Without the River is an elegantly wrought memoir of resilience, courage, and reinvention. A portrait of nature at its most beautiful and demanding, it is the story of a girl whose family struggled against Depression-era hardship and personal tragedy to carve out a small farm in rural South Dakota. The youngest of seven, Barbara wrestles against the expectations of her family, the strictures of the church, and the limits imposed by a male-dominated culture. Eager for adventure, she leaves the farm—first for the Peace Corps and ultimately for the unknown environs of Manhattan’s Upper East Side—but she never truly escapes. Lost Without the River demonstrates the emotional power that even the smallest place can exert, and the gravitational pull that calls a person back home.
