Book The Dairy Herd Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dairy Herd Classic Reprint written by Henry H. Wing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dairy Herd Fm. L7. - The square, beefy type of cow, usually a poor milker. Note poorly placed teats. Compare with Fig. 16.considered is the choice of a breed and whether the herd shall be made up.of pure-bred or grade animals. There are several well-known breeds of dairy cattle in (anad each having distinct qualities and each having strong partisans. While, undoubtedly, some breeds are better fitted for certain conditions of soil and climate than are others, still the matter of the choice of a breed may well be left to individual preference. In almost any location one may choose a breed for which he has a strong liking, either real or fancied, and be assured that he can establish with it a successful herd. Jerseys, Guernseys, Holsteins, Ayrshires, and even Shorthorns, make a varied and fairly long list of breeds from which to select. The comparative merits of pure-bred and grade cows. Whether pure bred or grade animals should, be selected is a matter on which there may be more difference of opinion. By purely bred animals are 'meant those that are recorded in the herd-books of their respective breeds. This is the narrow, restricted sense of the term pure-bred, but it is the one in common use in Canada. A grade ammal is the produce of a pure-bred sire on a common, or grade, dam. The produce of a pure-bred sire and a common, or scrub, dam is called a half blood; the produce of a pure-bred sire and a half-blood dam is called a three-quarters blood; a three-quarters blood bredin turn to a pure-bred sire will produce a seven-eighths blood and so on ad infinitum. Since only the offspring of pure-bred parents on both sides are eligible to registry in the herd books of any of the dairy breeds, it follows that, no matter how far the process of grading up by. The use of pure-bred sires on grade females is carried, pure breds, in the technical sense, can never be produced. Since pure-bred animals are sought for breeding purposes, the offspring of pure-bred animials are therefore more valuable and command a higher price than the offspring of grades. Hence, if the yalue of the calves is taken into consideration, a pure-bred herd is amore productive one, other things being equal, than a grade herd On the other hand, by the grading-up process referred to, continually selecting the cows that are the best producers, it is entirely possible and by no means difficult to estab lish a herd of grade cows that will equal in the production of milk any herd of pure-bred animals. Hence, if the main product alone is sought, a grade herd may produce as largely as a pure-bred one; but if the by-products are to be taken into consideration, as it was stated at the outset that they should be, a pure-bred herd certainly has an advantage over a grade herd of equal productive capacity. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dairy Herd Improvement Letter, Vol. 53 Table 2 shows errors and conflicts noted in 1976 rather than the number of records in error. As many as four errors or conflicts or both may be coded for a single record. Table 2 shows that missing identification numbers for sires of grade cows caused rejection of records. The next most frequent cause of rejection - was that the cow number was all zeros. Next, with a loss of records, was conflicting or questionable birth date. The records rejected during the main edit are returned to the appropriate processing center for correction. Increased care in identifying (including the reporting of sire and dam numbers) and reporting all animals in each herd would greatly increase the number of records used for bull and cow evaluation. Book How to Choose a Good Cow Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Choose a Good Cow Classic Reprint written by George Severance and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Choose a Good Cow To study the homely, commonplace cow is strictly in accordance with the spirit of the times. The growing tendency in education is to give a larger and larger proportion of time to the study of things that pertain to everyday life. Every man, woman and child uses in one or more forms the products of the dairy cow. In Western Wash ington many families and many communities depend upon dairying for their principal income, many others keep a family cow, and many depend upon buying all milk, butter, etc., consumed. In any case, all are interested in the most economical production of high class dairy products. Dairy cows vary greatly in the amount of milk and butter fat they will produce and in the economy of production. Many will yield a large profit but many will not pay for their feed with the best of care and are correctly termed star boarders. The majority of dairy herds contain some star boarders eating up the profits produced by better members of the herd. Many dairymen realize they are not clearing much money but are unable to detect the boarders. There is no more important thing to be taught in a region as de pendent upon dairying for its development and prosperity as Western Washington than the best method for selecting a good cow, and there is no better channel for the dissemination of this knowledge than through the public schools. There are two methods in use for the selection of a dairy cow: 1. The use of the Babcock test and the milk scale. 2. Selection of a cow from physical makeup. Book Feeding Dairy Cattle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Feeding Dairy Cattle Classic Reprint written by E. S. Savage and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feeding Dairy Cattle The Savage articles on Feeding Dairy Cattle have been published in the World from 1916 to the present time, and were reprinted in book form in 1917 and again in 1918. Breeders and dairymen appreciated that nothing of this sort had ever before been prepared for their benefit - a series of practical articles giving explicit directions on the important question of how to feed their dairy cows most efficiently and most economically. In addition, it was written not only from the standpoint of the ordinary dairyman, but from the point of view of the Holstein breeder as well - the breeder who is anxious to make the most of his opportunities. In short, the book of Savage articles comprised the most complete, understandable and up-to-the-minute text-book of Holstein feeding information ever put together. The first edition was quickly snapped up by the breeders, and likewise by agricultural colleges and schools, who bought these books in quantity for text-book use. In view of this enthusiastic reception, backing up our judgment in the matter, we are issuing a third edition, revised and brought down to date. The entire subject of feeding dairy cattle, as handled by Professor Savage, is based upon actual methods in use by successful dairymen. This book differs from the ordinary text-book in the important respect that every theory is made to deliver the goods in actual practice before it is accepted. Professor Savage is recognized as an authority on feeding matters. His ideas have proven successful not only in his own experience, but in the hands of dairymen and breeders who have put them into practice. He is in charge of the foundation courses in Feeds and Feeding at Cornell University, and has done considerable experimental and research work in feeding in that institution. Several cows with records of 30 to 35 pounds have been bred and developed in the university herd, and one of these cows, Glista Ernestine, has made seven different 30-pound records. The handling of these cows forms the basis of an interesting chapter in this book. The details of the care and feed of a number of the leading producers, in both short and longtime tests, as given by the men in actual charge, form the basis of other chapters, invaluable to the man who is interested in getting the greatest possible returns from his test work. Altogether we can commend this book to our Holstein friends in full confidence that its careful study will result in added knowledge of the subject of feeding that will be of practical service to them in their business as Holstein breeders and dairymen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Feeding of Dairy Cattle The art and science of feeding dairy cattle has ever been changing, and during the last two decades greater improve ments have been brought about in this branch of agriculture, by practical feeders and investigators, than ever before. The importance of the dairy cow as an economic factor is now recognized. This is primarily due to the fact that, with little waste of energy, she converts the roughages and other feeds grown on the farm into products suitable for human consumption.
