Book excerpt: Intended to inform and inspire, The D-Word is an honest, firsthand look at divorce and its ramifications. Parents, grandparents, friends, attorneys and counselors are invited to glimpse 12-year-old Gina's experience and learn how their actions shape reality for children of divorce. Through real-life examples, The D-Word addresses issues such as conflict, communication, alienation, attitudes and, ultimately, moving on. When Gina's parents decide to separate, she finds herself propelled toward adulthood on the emotional roller coaster ride of her life. Gone are the days of an existence filled with typical adolescent turmoil. Instead of exploring her social circles, Gina listens intently to decode her parents' telephone discussions. She takes on a new level of maturity as caretaker of her younger brother and confidant to her distressed mother while she grapples with her role in a changed family. As a year unfolds, Gina struggles to find understanding, adjustment and peace of mind.

Book Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible

Download or read book Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible written by David Instone-Brewer and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2002-06-07 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many, the New Testament's teaching on divorce and remarriage seems to be both impractical and unfair. The "plain" meaning of the texts allows for divorce only in cases of adultery or desertion, and it does not permit remarriage until the death of one's former spouse. But are these proscriptions the final word for Christians today? Are we correctly reading the scriptures that address these issues? By looking closely at the biblical texts on divorce and remarriage in light of the first-century Jewish and Greco-Roman world, this book shows that the original audience of the New Testament heard these teachings differently. Through a careful exploration of the background literature of the Old Testament, the ancient Near East, and especially ancient Judaism, David Instone-Brewer constructs a biblical view of divorce and remarriage that is wider in scope than present-day readings. Among the important findings of the book are that both Jesus and Paul condemned divorce without valid grounds and discouraged divorce even for valid grounds; that both Jesus and Paul affirmed the Old Testament grounds for divorce; that the Old Testament allowed divorce for adultery and for neglect or abuse; and that both Jesus and Paul condemned remarriage after an invalid divorce but not after a valid divorce. Instone-Brewer shows that these principles are not only different from the traditional church interpretation of the New Testament but also directly relevant to modern relationships. Enhanced with pastoral advice on how to apply the biblical teaching in today's context, this volume will be a valuable resource for anyone seeking serious answers about married life.

Book Remarriage is Adultery Unless

Download or read book Remarriage is Adultery Unless written by David Pawson and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consecutive polygamy (as many husbands or wives as you like but only one at a time) is now an accepted norm in contemporary society. Hardly surprising, since the social, legal, moral and financial restraints holding marriages together for a lifetime have been steadily eroded in a relativist age where anything goes. What is surprising is that divorce and remarriage are becoming as common inside the church as outside, even among Christian leaders and especially in the Evangelical stream. Believers have been outspoken about such issues as abortion and homosexuality though their Lord Jesus said nothing about either. He did say quite a lot about the subject of this book but there is either a reluctance to take his teaching at face value or an eagerness to enlarge his ‘exception’ until it becomes the rule. This volume primarily appeals to those for whom the Bible is the final authority in all matters of belief and behaviour, especially those who preach to, teach and counsel others. The author believes that the church should be leading the world uphill rather than following the world downhill. David Pawson has a worldwide teaching ministry, particularly for church leaders. He is known to many through Christian broadcasting and is the author of numerous books.

Book Primal Loss

Download or read book Primal Loss written by Leila Miller and published by Lcb Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy now-adult children of divorce give their candid and often heart-wrenching answers to eight questions (arranged in eight chapters, by question), including: What were the main effects of your parents' divorce on your life? What do you say to those who claim that "children are resilient" and "children are happy when their parents are happy"? What would you like to tell your parents then and now? What do you want adults in our culture to know about divorce? What role has your faith played in your healing? Their simple and poignant responses are difficult to read and yet not without hope. Most of the contributors--women and men, young and old, single and married--have never spoken of the pain and consequences of their parents' divorce until now. They have often never been asked, and they believe that no one really wants to know. Despite vastly different circumstances and details, the similarities in their testimonies are striking; as the reader will discover, the death of a child's family impacts the human heart in universal ways.
