Book excerpt: This book is for the guidance of those wishing to use stained cultures for virus studies. In this manual, sufficient illustrations are presented that may not be otherwise readily available to the reader and indicate the wide range of cytopathic changes. However, it has been necessary to limit the size of the pictures to a minimum - enough to convince the reader that the technique can be of great practical value for the recognition of many different viruses.

Book Cytopathology of Infectious Diseases

Download or read book Cytopathology of Infectious Diseases written by PANTANOWITZ LIRON and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cytopathology of Infectious Diseases is the first book of its kind to focus entirely on the cytopathology of infectious diseases. It contains all of the pertinent information about the cytology of infectious diseases and microorganisms and will serve as an ideal handy reference. This unique volume covers the cytomorphology of various microorganisms and the host reactions they elicit, and also incorporates an update on advances in the field. Newly recognized infections such as the recent discovery of the Merkel Cell Polyomavirus (MCV) are included, as well as the utility of new immunostains (e.g. CM2B4 for MCV) and the role of molecular techniques that assist in the identification, classification and even quantification of microorganisms. Each chapter is succinctly written and concisely referenced with key published articles and resources. The volume includes practical pointers, useful diagnostic criteria, differential diagnoses and potential pitfalls. Many color images of high resolution that illustrate microorganisms (e.g. branching hyphae) and host reactions (e.g. viral cytopathic effect) are included throughout. Relevant tables with diagrams that provide quick reference guides are incorporated. Cytopathology of Infectious Diseases will serve as a valuable reference tool for cytopathologists, anatomical/clinical pathologists, cytotechnologists, pathology residents and cytopathology fellows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time seems ripe for a critical compendium of that segment of the biological universe we call viruses. Virology, as a science, having passed only recently through its descriptive phase of naming and numbering, has probably reached that stage at which relatively few new-truly new-viruses will be discovered. Triggered by the intellectual probes and techniques of molecular biology, genetics, bio chemical cytology, and high resolution microscopy and spectroscopy, the field has experienced a genuine information explosion. Few serious attempts have been made to chronicle these events. This comprehensive series, which will comprise some 6000 pages in a total of 19 volumes, represents a commitment by a large group of active investigators to analyze, digest, and expostulate on the great mass of data relating to viruses, much of which is now amorphous and disjointed, and scattered throughout a wide literature. In this way, we hope to place the entire field in perspective, and to develop an invaluable reference and sourcebook for researchers and students at all levels. This series is designed as a continuum that can be entered any where, but which also provides a logical progression of developing facts and integrated concepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herpes Simplex Virus is the fifth monograph to be published in the Bloomsbury Series of Clinical Science. It provides an authoritative review of the key issues related to this common clinical problem. The characteristics of the virus, its epidemiology and the diag nosis and management of the various forms of infection are all considered. Adrian Mindel is an international authority on this subject; he joined the Academic Department of Genito-urinary Medicine at the Middlesex Hospital in 1980 and has been actively involved in HSV research since that time. His major research interests include the epidemiology and treatment of genital herpes, the epidemi ology of neo-natal herpes and the many and varied features of HSV infections in immuno-compromised patients. The continuing aim of the Bloomsbury Series is to identify the growing areas of clinical research and relate these to current and future medical practice. In Herpes Simplex Virus such aspirations have been successfully achieved. London, May 1989 Jack Tinker Preface There has been considerable interest in herpes simplex viruses (HSV) over recent years. Amongst the many reasons for this are the introduction of safe and efficacious therapy, the recognition that HSV may cause life-threatening infections in neonates and immunocompromised patients, the observation that genital herpes is one of the commonest viral sexually transmitted diseases and the possible association of HSV with cervical cancer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science never solves apr oblem without creating ten more Geor ge Bernard Shaw How prophetic the above words prove to be when applied to the advances of 20th century medicine. Prior to Banting and Best, chnicians were unaware of the ravages of diabetes, patients simply wasted away and died. Following the purifica tion of insulin, clinicians now had to deal with diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neph ropathy and all the other complications of long-term diabetes. A little over 50 years ago, the first successful human kidney transplant was performed in Boston. The first 30 years of the experience had successes when compared to the alternative but were a constant struggle to get even 50% of the grafts from deceased donors to survive more than a year. However, the science continued to advance knowledge of the immune response. With this came more and increasingly powerful tools for the clinician. Suddenly, success rates of 80-90% at one year were attainable. With this success came new problems, new complications and clinicians now had to worry about the long-term consequences of their therapy as patients were surviving with functional grafts for extended periods. A particular infectious complication evolved with the application of ever more powerful immunosuppressant drugs. Astute clinicians noted that occasionally cellular rejections seemed to get worse with steroids. Despite their best efforts and the use of powerful drugs, patients lost their grafts to overwhelming interstitial infiltrates not seen before.
