Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cyclopedia of Education: A Dictionary of Information for the Use of Teachers, School Officers, Parents, and Others The work here offered to the public is the first cyclopaedia of education in the English language, although the need of such a work has long been felt, Cyclopaedias, both general and special, are rapidly increasing in number, not only in countries in which the English language is spoken, but wherever, under the influence of advancing civilization, literature flourishes, and the cultivation of science and art has enlarged the boundaries of human knowledge. Information scattered through a multitude of volumes is usually inaccessible to those by whom it is most needed and, consequently, the most important results of study and research are often of no avail to those whose Special office it is to apply them to a practical purpose. Hence. The need of works that present in a condensed form, and so as readily to be referred to, all the import-ant facts in the various departments of human knowledge; and, consequently, we find that it is fast becoming the habit of the educated classes every - where to consult such works. In view of the large number of special cyclopaedias in other departments of knowledge, and more especially of the excellent cyclo paedias of education which Germany has possessed for many years, it is quite surprising that a branch of knowledge so extensively valued and studied as education, should have continued. In this country and in England, for so'long a time without its special cyclopaedia. Accordingly, the first announce ment of this work was, on all sides, greeted with the most earnest expressions of approbation and welcome. The value of a work of this kind must, of course, depend on the plan which forms its ground work, and the accuracy and fullness with which the plan is carried out. To both of these points the editors have given their undeviating attention, striving to leave nothing to be desired in either respect. Book The Greenwood Dictionary of Education

Download or read book The Greenwood Dictionary of Education written by Bloomsbury Publishing and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-07-19 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book defines over 3,000 terms from the field of education to assist those charged with teaching students to become global citizens in a rapidly changing, technological society. John W. Collins and Nancy Patricia O'Brien, coeditors of the first edition of The Greenwood Dictionary of Education published in 2003, have acknowledged and addressed these shifts. This revised second edition supplements the extensive content of the first through greater focus on subjects such as neurosciences in educational behavior, gaming strategies as a learning technique, social networking, and distance education. Terms have been revised, where necessary, to represent changes in educational practice and theory. The Dictionary's focus is on current and evolving terminology specific to the broad field of education, although terms from closely related fields used in the context of education are also included. Encompassing the history of education as well as its future trends, the updated second edition will aid in the understanding and use of terms as they apply to contemporary educational research, practice, and theory.

It covers all of the main fields involved in Condensed Matter Physics, such as crystallography, electrical properties, fluids, magnetism, material properties, optics, radiation, semiconductors, and superconductivity, as well as highlights of important related subjects such as quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, and statistical mechanics. Both theoretical and experimental aspects of condensed matter are covered in detail. The entries range from very short paragraphs on topics where definitions are needed, such as Bloch's law, clathrate compound, donor, domain, Kondo lattice, mean free path, and Wigner crystal, to long discussions of more general or more comprehensive topics such as antiferromagnetism, crystal lattice dynamics, dislocations, Fermi surface, Josephson effect, luminescence, magnetic films, phase transitions and semiconductors. The main theoretical approaches to Condensed Matter Physics are explained. There are several long tables on, for example, Bravais lattices, characteristics of magnetic materials, units of physical quantities, symmetry groups. The properties of the main elements of the periodic table are given. Numerous entries not covered by standard Solid State Physics texts o Self-similarity o The adiabatic approximation o Bistability Emphasis on materials not discussed in standard texts o Activated carborn o Austenite o Bainite o Calamitics o Carbine o Delat phase o Discotics o Gunier-Preston zones o Heterodesmic structures o Heusler Alloys o Stress and strain deviators o Vicalloy · Each entry is fully cross-referenced to help tracking down all aspects of a topic under investigation Highly illustrated to clarify many concepts
