This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cyclopedia of American Literature The selection of subjects for biographical or critical treatment ap pears to have been governed by no rule or principle whatever, unless one may be found in the facility with which paragraphs about certain characters could be compiled from monthly magazines, quarterly reviews, biographical dictionaries, or other easily accessible works. William Morell came to New England In 1623, and remained one year; Wil iiam Wood, about the same time, made a short visit to Boston. It does not appear that either of them ever wrote a line here, or intended to settle heie; but both are formally introduced as American authors William Vaughan, who visited Newfoundland, but never touched the soil of what Is now the United States, is also treated as an American author, in two columns of biography and criticism. Captain John Smith was in Virginia and along the coast previous to 1615, and six columns are devoted to his achievements in American literature. Soon after, we have a life of Rev. Samuel Ward, of Ipswich, England, with a part of one of his sermons, preached and printed in England, although this Rev. Samuel Ward was never in America, never wrote a syllable about America, or, so far as we are informed, knew of the discovery or existence of this continent. Another Ward, of whom there is a long account - Nathaniel - did, when between sixty and seventy years of age, come to Massachusetts Bay, and after his return home, where he lived still many years, wrote several volumes, in some of which there are allusions to his visit this side the Atlantic. Book A History of American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Percy H. Boynton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature The general purpose in the preparation of this book has, been to eliminate negligible detail and to subordinate or omit authors of minor importance in order to stress the men and the movements that are most significant in American intel lectual history/ The book has therefore been written with a view to showing the drift of American thought as illustrated by major writers or groups and as revealed by a careful study of one or two cardinal works by each. In this sequence of thought the growth of American self-consciousness and the changing ideals of American patriotism have been kept in mind throughout. The attempt is made to induce study of representative classics and extensive reading of the American literature which illuminates the past of the country chiefly, of course, in reminiscent fiction, drama, and poetry. Book A Brief History of American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Brief History of American Literature Classic Reprint written by William P. Trent and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of American Literature In this book, which is designed for the use of schools, I - have endeavoured to furnish a condensed account of the development of American literature, rather than a series of connected essays on leading American authors. At the same time I have tried to mention no writer or book devoid of a fair amount of significance, and I have also had it in mind to treat the more important authors on a scale sufficiently extended to suit the needs of the average class. I have aimed to minimize tentative criticism and to give only such details of historical setting as could not well be spared. I have condensed the bibliographical information to dimensions more or less proportionate with the resources of school libraries and have divided it into sections according to chapters. The period from 1866 to the present day has been sketched in a chapter, fuller treatment of writers, many of whom are still living, not seeming advisable in view of the difficulty of maintaining an impartial attitude toward contemporaries. An appendix gives important dates, which may be used in lieu of those scattered through the text. Topics for essays and class reports will be often suggested by the paragraph headings, and teachers may sometimes find it advantageous, when time permits, to have reports made on writers and books mentioned in the Appendix but not in the text, as well as on topics treated more fully in my larger book, "A History of American Literature, 1607-1865" (1903, Appleton). Download or read book A Short History of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Walter Cochrane Bronson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of American Literature Throughout the book the literature has been pre sented in its relation to general conditions in America and to the literatures of England and the Continent of Europe, for only so can it be completely understood and its full significance perceived 3 but the personality of the authors and the intrinsic qualities of their work have, it is hoped, received due attention. The division into periods is not meant to be insisted upon too strongly. But some dividing lines must be run for convenience and clearness in treating of so wide and diversified a field, and those adopted are perhaps liable to fewer objections than any others. They have, however, been transgressed freely where it was necessary to do so in order to avoid splitting the discussion of an author's work. In the case of writers with whom the reader is probably not familiar and never need be, the method is chie y descriptive 3 elsewhere the book is intended to be merely a guide in reading and studying the literature itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of American Literature The wide use of the author's History of English Literature the favor with which it has been received in all parts of the United States, and the number of earnest requests for a History of American Literature on the same plan, have led to the writing of this book. It has not appeared sooner because the author has followed his rule of making a careful first-hand study, not only of all the matter discussed, but also of a far greater amount, which, although it must be omitted from a condensed textbook, is, nevertheless, necessary as a background for judgment and selection. The following chapters describe the greatest achievements in American literature from the earliest times until the present. Many pupils fail to obtain a clear idea of great American authors and literary movements because textbook writers and teachers ignore the element of truth in the old adage, "The half is greater than the whole," and dwell too much on minor authors and details, which could reasonably be expected to interest only a specialist. In the following pages especial attention has been paid, not only to the individual work of great authors, but also to literary movements, ideals, and animating principles, and to the relation of all these to English literature. The author has further aimed to make this work both interesting and suggestive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Introduction to the Study of American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Brander Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of American Literature This book is intended as an introduction to the study Of American literature. Although the chapters on the separate authors are wholly distinct, they have been so planned that each Of them prepares the way for its suc cessor, and that all Of them together outline the changing circumstances under which American literature has devel Oped. An attempt has been made to show how each Of the chief American authors influenced his time, and how he in turn was influenced by it; and also to indicate how each Of them was related to the others, both personally and artistically. Bearing in mind the fact that the student needs to have his attention centered on vital points, all dates and all proper names, and all titles Of books not absolutely essen tial, have been rigorously omitted. Interest has thus been concentrated on the literary career Of each Of the greater writers and on their practice Of the literary art, in the hope and expectation that the student will be encouraged and stimulated to read their works for his own pleasure. After the consideration Of these more important authors, one by one, the writers of less consequence have been discussed briefly in a single chapter; and in like manner a single chapter has been devoted to a summary considera tion Of the condition Of our literature at the end Of the nine teenth century. N 0 living author is named in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Chronological Outlines of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Selden L. Whitcomb and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronological Outlines of American Literature Chronology is the backbone of history - of the history of literature as of any other. Perhaps no tool is more useful to a student of literature than a well-made table of well-selected titles and dates. Of late years no better implement of this kind has been devised than Mr. Frederick Ryland's "Chronological Outlines of English Literature," published in 1890. Mr. Ryland planned a work which should occupy toward literary history the position a date-book holds toward political history. In his Part I. he sought to bring "the annals of English literature into connection with general European literature and with history, so that a glance enables us to see the position that a given work occupies in the line of development;" and in his Part II. he gave an alphabetical list of authors with their principal works. Mr. Ryland hoped that Part I. would perform in some degree "the same kind of service for the student of literary history as a map does for the student of geography," while Part II. could be utilized in "studying literature from the biographical point of view." That Mr. Ryland has been successful in his hope is the testimony of all who have had occasion to use his invaluable manual; and the more it has been used, the more fully are its merits recognized.
