Book excerpt: A cruel decision lies before Commander Daniel Ricdeau. No doubt it's the hardest choice of his career, or rather his life. Ever since the mysterious cyborg known as Doctor Death became Ostark's president, he remained out of reach. Most of his time he spent in secure military complexes. Even when a rare public appearance happened, intense security measures and disinformation campaigns meant the Nirnivian learned the fact too late to act. Now, however, a unique opportunity presents itself. A Nirnivian spy discovered the date of a public speech by the president. This makes assassinating him possible, though it would be a suicide mission. While ridding himself of his sworn enemy tempts Daniel, he remains reticent. An attempt on the cyborg's life means war. The last one they waged against Ostark was a disaster for Nirnivia. They survived only through the cyborg's apparent mercy. Nothing suggests they'd perform any better in a new conflict. And yet, can Daniel afford to wait any longer? Since Doctor Death took over Ostark, their military strength has grown exponentially. The more time passes, the greater the gap between the two countries becomes. Soon, the chances of a Nirnivian victory will go from improbable to impossible. But what if the mission fails? Then, they'd face a brutal war while the greatest tactical mind ever still led their opponent. Will Daniel go ahead with the assassination attempt? If so, will they succeed? Will the cyborg perish? In that case, what comes next? All the answers point to certain death. Book 4 of The Cyborg's Crusade

Book Cyberculture Cyborgs and Science Fiction

Download or read book Cyberculture Cyborgs and Science Fiction written by William S. Haney and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2006 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing a key issue related to human nature, this book argues that the first-person experience of pure consciousness may soon be under threat from posthuman biotechnology. In exploiting the mind's capacity for instrumental behavior, posthumanists seek to extend human experience by physically projecting the mind outward through the continuity of thought and the material world, as through telepresence and other forms of prosthetic enhancements. Posthumanism envisions a biology/machine symbiosis that will promote this extension, arguably at the expense of the natural tendency of the mind to move toward pure consciousness. As each chapter of this book contends, by forcibly overextending and thus jeopardizing the neurophysiology of consciousness, the posthuman condition could in the long term undermine human nature, defined as the effortless capacity for transcending the mind's conceptual content. Presented here for the first time, the essential argument of this book is more than a warning; it gives a direction: far better to practice patience and develop pure consciousness and evolve into a higher human being than to fall prey to the Faustian temptations of biotechnological power. As argued throughout the book, each person must choose for him or herself between the technological extension of physical experience through mind, body and world on the one hand, and the natural powers of human consciousness on the other as a means to realize their ultimate vision.

Book excerpt: Letters to the Cyborgs describes a frightening future about to land on our doorsteps, based on inventions, science and technology we have today. Each story details the political, social, and environmental destruction of our world as Artificial Intelligence takes over the planet. With intelligence, insight and humor, Baker examines what it means to be human in a world where Cyborgs and robots rule. Ranging from chilling visions of Armageddon to haunting stories of the power of human love, with some comic relief thrown in to make the truth easier to handle, this groundbreaking collection of short stories faces the questions scientists, politicians and corporations are ignoring: when Artificial Intelligence becomes "self-aware" and is a thousand times more intelligent than any human being, what happens next? Scientists tell us that this "Singularity" will occur by 2030. "What is human?" will become the most important question in history as humans become 51% or more machine.

Book Sith Slayers Stargates Cyborgs

Download or read book Sith Slayers Stargates Cyborgs written by John R. Perlich and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of the twenty-first century has already seen its fair share of modern myths with heroes such as Spider-Man, Superman, and Harry Potter. The authors in this volume deconstruct, discuss, engage, and interrogate the mythologies of the new millennium in science fiction fantasy texts. Using literary and rhetorical criticism - paired with philosophy, cultural studies, media arts, psychology, and communication studies - they illustrate the function, value, and role of new mythologies, and show that the universal appeal of these texts is their mythic power, drawing upon archetypes of the past which resonate with individuals and throughout culture. In this way they demonstrate how mythology is timeless and eternal.

Book The Areas of My Expertise

Download or read book The Areas of My Expertise written by John Hodgman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the great tradition of the American almanac, The Areas of My Expertise is a brilliant and hilarious compendium of handy reference tables, fascinating trivia, and sage wisdom on all topics large and small. Although bestsellers such as Poor Richard’s Almanack and The Book of Lists were certainly valuable, they also were largely true. Here is a different kind of handy desk reference, one in which all of the historical oddities and amazing true facts are sifted through the singular, illuminating imagination of John Hodgman—which is the nice way of saying: He made it all up. John Hodgman brings his considerable expertise to bear in answering all of the questions book buyers have been asking: -What are the mottoes of the 51 United States? THE ANSWER IS PROVIDED -Who were the U.S. presidents who had hooks for hands? THE ANSWER IS PROVIDED -What role does the Yale secret society “Skull and Bones” play in the secret world government? THERE IS NO SECRET WORLD GOVERNMENT -What was the menu at the first Thanksgiving, and did it include eels? Technically, that is two questions, but do not apologize, for John Hodgman shall answer them both . . . LATER. -Aside from a compendium of fake trivia, what is the best kind of book to write? A SIMPLE TABLE OF THE 55 MOST DRAMATIC LITERARY SITUATIONS PROVIDES THE ANSWER, and John Hodgman is the author of that table. Imagine if The Book of Lists had been rewritten by Peter Cook and Jorge Luis Borges under the pseudonym of “John Hodgman” and then renamed The Areas of My Expertise, and you will only begin to have a sense of the dizzying, uproarious, sublimely weird, and strangely wise journey that is contained within this book (along with all the pages and words). Perfect for anyone who thirsts for knowledge, and especially for collectors of books of fake trivia, The Areas of My Expertise offers through absurdity a better understanding of the world we share—and recognizes that while the truth may be stranger than fiction, it is never as strange as lies . . . or as true. Look out for John Hodgman's latest book, Vacationland, available from Viking in Fall 2017.

Book Cyborgs Mankind Redefined

Download or read book Cyborgs Mankind Redefined written by Donna McDonald and published by Donna McDonald. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 1009 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war may be over, but the fight for their humanity is just beginning. PEYTON 313 - Dr. Kyra Winters never meant for her cyber science discoveries to be used for evil, but that’s exactly what happened. She can’t undo the past but she can change the present by restoring the cyborg who was once Marine Captain Peyton Elliot. KINGSTON 691 - Norton took his wife and his memories away. Now King wants them back. Kingston West put his military service behind him much easier than most of the soldiers he served with during the final world war. As far as he's concerned, the cyborg named Kingston 691 no longer exists. MARCUS 582 - No matter what his cybernetic mind concludes, nothing in Marcus Kell’s newly restored life is logical. He still remembers all the things Kyra says a restored cyborg is supposed to forget. Things like what it was like to be captured and tortured while fighting to save a country that a decade later doesn’t care about him. ERIC 754 - Marine Lance Corporal Eric Anderson tended to forget he was a cyborg. Most of the time he didn't give his past as a military machine any thought. He'd always lived by his human gut, not his logic chip, so thinking outside of the cybernetic box was just how he worked. Then he met her—Evelyn 489—a female cyborg so erratically dangerous she has to be kept locked away.

Book Man Made

Download or read book Man Made written by Joel Stein and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The smudge looked suspiciously penis- like. The doctor confirmed: "That's the baby's penis!" which caused not celebration, but panic. Joel pictured having to go camping and fix a car and use a hammer and throw a football and watch professionals throw footballs and figure out whether to be sad or happy about the results of said football throwing. So begins his quest to confront his effete nature whether he likes it or not (he doesn't), by doing a twenty-four-hour shift with L.A. firefighters, going hunting, rebuilding a house, driving a Lamborghini, enduring three days of boot camp with the U.S. Army, day-trading with $100,000, and going into the ring with UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture. Seeking help from a panel of experts, including his manly father-in-law, Boy Scouts, former NFL star Warren Sapp, former MLB All-Star Shawn Green, Adam Carolla, and a pit bull named Hercules, he expects to learn that masculinity is defined not by the size of his muscles, but by the size of his heart (also, technically, a muscle). This is not at all what he learns.
