Book The Cyanide Handbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cyanide Handbook Classic Reprint written by J. E. Clennell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cyanide Handbook Notwithstanding the fact that so much has been written about the cyanide process since its successful establishment in South Africa in 1890 there still appear to be some aspects of the subject which are only slightly touched upon, or quite inadequately treated, by the many able exponents of the process, and many facts of great value to the practical worker can only be gathered by long and painful search through technical literature. The various mechanical developments of the process have been dealt with by different writers too numerous to mention, and books have been published in which this side of the question is handled in a fairly adequate manner. The chemical aspect of the process has, however, been treated only in a fragmentary and imperfect manner, although valuable contributions to our knowledge of this subject have appeared from time to time, chiefly in the form of papers read before such bodies as the Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa, the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Society of Chemical Industry. The aim of the present work is to bring together such scattered information in a handy and accessible form, which will appeal to all workers interested in the process, whether as managers of plants, foremen, chemists, or assayers. Depending as it does on the application of chemical principles, a very important section of the work connected with a cyanide plant is carried on in the laboratory; this department will therefore receive a larger share of attention than is usually given to it in books of this description. The discussion of the chemical properties, reactions, methods of manufacture, and analysis of cyanide itself, which have been scarcely touched upon in other similar books, will here be dealt with in sufficient detail. An outline will be given of the latest and most approved practice in modem cyanide plants, but without going into minute details of working, which are liable to constant change. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Book of Cyanide Practice The cyanide process is a subject comprehending many divisions, and one that can best be treated along some phase or with a special point in view. The point in view or purpose of this work is to furnish students, cyanide workers, and those generally and technically interested in the subject, with a practical and technical exposition of the principles and basic practice applicable to cyanidation in general, and not of the particular practice at any plant or locality. An exposition not too technical and complicated or comprehensive for those who are acquiring or about to acquire their technical equipment, nor too superficial for the experienced operator. Intended primarily to guide the first footsteps and early progress of those who hope to eventually operate plants, the author has used simple explanations and many repetitions and references to other parts of the text in the effort to clarify a subject that is confusing, to say the least, to the beginner. Desiring to produce a work that will be of use in actual practice, rather than something to simply add to one's technical library, the author has not kept within academic limitations, but has resorted to homely methods of explanation where deemed advisable. Though going into considerable detail, no branch of the subject has been carried to that point where it should be taken up as a special subject. It aims to lift the careful reader and student to that point where he may intelligently seek further information in the literature on investigations into special and abstruse details of the subject, for which purpose and as an aid to the advanced worker an extended Classified Bibliography of the more accessible literature on the cyanide process is included. Where it has been impossible to give definite figures without going into explanatory details, obviously beyond the scope of this work, figures representing the average or rational extremes in practice have been given. The reader may consider these as carefully selected to represent accurately approved modern practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Data for the Cyanide Plant The inspiration for the publication of this volume was in the realization that, while theory and practice of the cyanide process has been ably explained in the standard works on the subject, no attempt has yet been made to collect the practical data, formulae, tables, usual methods etc., in one small and convenient volume which might be carried about by the Man on Shift. Book Cyanide Practice

Download or read book Cyanide Practice written by M. W. von Bernewitz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyanide Practice: 1910 to 1913 This is the third in the series of books'that began with 'recent Cyanide Practice' edited by Mr. T. A. Rickard, and printed in 1907, and which was continued by 'more Recent Cyanide Prac tice' edited by Mr. H. Foster Rain and printed in 1910. The plan of all three books is the same. They include articles on all phases of current cyanide practice based upon experience in all parts of the world. In the main the papers here reprinted were first pub lished in the Mining and Scientific Press. One or two related in timately to discussions in the columns of the Press, have been taken from The Mining Magazine, and the South African Mining Journal to which acknowledgment is gladly made here and in the body of the text. In preparing the various papers for use in this book a number have been materially condensed and my own have been revised. Instead of the articles being arranged according to dates, they are given under their proper heads, from the chemistry of the process to the clean-up, although the dates on which they were published are also given. This arrangement should find favor with readers, who will be able more readily to find any particular depart ment or process. The time covered by the articles here brought together extended from July, 1910, to January, 1913, except that a few appearing in the Press in the early part of the present year have been included. The necessity of restricting the size of the volume has made it necessary to omit a number of excellent papers of local or temporary importance, and also many that deal especially with ore dressing and stamp milling rather than cyanidation proper. A number dealing especially with cyanidation in Mexico having already been printed in Mr. Ferdinand mccann's work 'cyanide Practice in Mexico' have also been left out. Even with these omissions, this book will, I hope, serve as have its predecessors, the main purpose of furnishing in convenient form a general view of the best in current cyanide practice. Book Cyanide Processes Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cyanide Processes Classic Reprint written by E. B. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyanide Processes The author's investigation of the Cyanide Process were first confined to Patent Office literature, together with such extracts as appeared from time to time in technical journals and society periodicals. For his own benefit he grouped the numerous articles which gave but a passing insight into the subject. His investigations upon the subject made to verify the results as set forth by the various writers convinced him that by grouping the items of importance in connection with the subject considerable light could be thrown on the process and much time saved. This grouping may also have the effect of bringing out new ideas upon the subject, and the one point mastered will not be forgotten while examining the next article on the subject. The writer is indebted to many for the ideas here advanced, and takes this occasion to express his gratitude to them for their valuable contributions. He has not attempted to go into the mechanical arrangements for the process, because on the one hand circumstances will vary at each plant, and on the other the arrangement of details belongs to the engineer of the company controlling and promoting the patents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cyanide Process: Its Control and Operation Much has been written on the cyanide process, but no book now available attacks the subject from the point that is most vital, namely, the laboratory. Every successful process owes its existence to a laboratory, which works out the details of efficient treatment and alters them as conditions demand. The object of this book is to furnish a laboratory guide, both for investigating a new ore and for conducting the laboratory of an operating mill. It should be helpful to the student and beginner, and it is hoped that it may also be of assistance to the more experienced. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Details of Cyanide Practice The chapters presented in this book are the record of an investigative tour of the principal cyaniding mills of North America, taken with the idea of presenting detailed facts about the present state of the process to the readers of the Engineering and Mining Journal, in which periodical they have already appeared. Actual description has been considered of less importance than discussion and correlation of facts gathered from widely different places, the intention having been to present facts and personal opinions, clearly indicated as such, in a form calculated to inform the profession in general and to promote discussion respecting details involving diverging practice. Some pages of the discussion elicited have been included as illuminating the subjects. One article, that constituting Chapter II, has been included that I did not write. Although I had visited and studied the plant discussed, and had formulated a paper treating of its interesting points, the description and explanation submitted by Mr. R. B. Watson, manager of the Nipissing Mining Co, was used, a manager being more thoroughly familiar with his own plant than anyone else could be. Some points which particularly attract the attention of the outsider, however, were mentioned in my discussion of the subject, and these are to be found constituting Chapter III. Those points thoroughly, covered by Mr. Watson have been removed from my article, which makes it somewhat disjointed, but anyone reading the two chapters will be at no trouble to understand the references The original itinerary of this technical journey included a visit to the important plants of Mexico, but the condition of affairs in that country when the trip was undertaken, made it necessary for that part to be postponed until such time as there will be more to study and greater safety in traveling. Any benefit which the profession may derive from the matter presented is to be credited to Mr. Walter Renton Ingalls, Editor of the Engineering and Mining Journal, to whose energy and progressive spirit the undertaking is due. The author's own modest words give one an excellent idea of the complexity of the subject. It became necessary, he writes, to test de novo almost every step in the ground, so that an investigation, which I had hoped to finish in a couple of years, has already taken twice that time, and is new only fairly begun. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Cyanidation Besides containing cyanide, the solution to be used for treating the ore must contain some additional or free alkali, because nearly all ores contain acid or tend to develop it during the course of treatment, and acids react with the alkaline cyanide to form hydrocyanic acid, hcn, thus involving a loss of the active reagent kon. The alkali most commonly used is lime, both because of its cheapness, and also because some lime is needed in any case to coagulate and settle the separated slime prepara tory to the slime treatment process. Caustic soda may also be used as protective alkali, though lime is usually preferable for chemical reasons, apart from other considerations. Book Between Silk and Cyanide

Download or read book Between Silk and Cyanide written by Leo Marks and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-04-29 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1942, with a black-market chicken tucked under his arm by his mother, Leo Marks left his father's famous bookshop, 84 Charing Cross Road, and went off to fight the war. He was twenty-two. Soon recognized as a cryptographer of genius, he became head of communications at the Special Operations Executive (SOE), where he revolutionized the codemaking techniques of the Allies and trained some of the most famous agents dropped into occupied Europe. As a top codemaker, Marks had a unique perspective on one of the most fascinating and, until now, little-known aspects of the Second World War. This stunning memoir, often funny, always gripping and acutely sensitive to the human cost of each operation, provides a unique inside picture of the extraordinary SOE organization at work and reveals for the first time many unknown truths about the conduct of the war. SOE was created in July 1940 with a mandate from Winston Churchill to "set Europe ablaze." Its main function was to infiltrate agents into enemy-occupied territory to perform acts of sabotage and form secret armies in preparation for D-Day. Marks's ingenious codemaking innovation was to devise and implement a system of random numeric codes printed on silk. Camouflaged as handkerchiefs, underwear, or coat linings, these codes could be destroyed message by message, and therefore could not possibly be remembered by the agents, even under torture. Between Silk and Cyanide chronicles Marks's obsessive quest to improve the security of agents' codes and how this crusade led to his involvement in some of the war's most dramatic and secret operations. Among the astonishing revelations is his account of the code war between SOE and the Germans in Holland. He also reveals for the first time how SOE fooled the Germans into thinking that a secret army was operating in the Fatherland itself, and how and why he broke the code that General de Gaulle insisted be available only to the Free French. By the end of this incredible tale, truly one of the last great World War II memoirs, it is clear why General Eisenhower credited the SOE, particularly its communications department, with shortening the war by three months. From the difficulties of safeguarding the messages that led to the destruction of the atomic weapons plant at Rjukan in Norway to the surveillance of Hitler's long-range missile base at Peenemünde to the true extent of Nazi infiltration of Allied agents, Between Silk and Cyanide sheds light on one of the least-known but most dramatic aspects of the war. Writing with the narrative flair and vivid characterization of his famous screenplays, Marks gives free rein to his keen sense of the absurd and wry wit without ever losing touch with the very human side of the story. His close relationship with "the White Rabbit" and Violette Szabo -- two of the greatest British agents of the war -- and his accounts of the many others he dealt with result in a thrilling and poignant memoir that celebrates individual courage and endeavor, without losing sight of the human cost and horror of war.
