This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black French Women and the Struggle for Equality, 1848–2016 explores how black women in France itself, the French Caribbean, Gorée, Dakar, Rufisque, and Saint-Louis experienced and reacted to French colonialism and how gendered readings of colonization, decolonization, and social movements cast new light on the history of French colonization and of black France. In addition to delineating the powerful contributions of black French women in the struggle for equality, contributors also look at the experiences of African American women in Paris and in so doing integrate into colonial and postcolonial conversations the strategies black women have engaged in negotiating gender and race relations à la française. Drawing on research by scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds and countries, this collection offers a fresh, multidimensional perspective on race, class, and gender relations in France and its former colonies, exploring how black women have negotiated the boundaries of patriarchy and racism from their emancipation from slavery to the second decade of the twenty-first century.

Download or read book Gender Relations in Global Perspective written by Nancy Cook and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with an increasingly diverse student population, an expanding field of gender scholarship, and an academic emphasis on multidisciplinarity, social science professors often struggle to address and integrate such a broad array of gender issues in their courses. This book addresses that challenge by increasing students' understandings of gender relations in multiple social fields across time and space. Gender Relations in Global Perspective is truly multidisciplinary. It is partially drawn from the work of sociologists, but articles written by gender scholars from the disciplines of cultural studies, history, political science, geography, and literary theory are also included. The readings examine historically persistent, cross-culturally relevant, and empirically grounded concerns such as men's position in the family and women's relationship to work, media, and the global economy, as well as the gendered problems of violence, sexuality and reproduction, and racism. This book presents an engaging range of comparative and cross-cultural gender analyses from various world regions, including the Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa. As the articles are dialogically situated in this text, readers will be able to analyse gender similarities and differences around the globe and learn about the diversity of gender experiences across cultures and regions. This range of analyses demonstrates how a global perspective enriches feminist analyses. Students will quickly learn that to investigate gender dynamics adequately, attention must be paid simultaneously to the processes of racialization, class, colonialism and imperalism, and sexuality that interweave with gender to produce complex forms of oppression.
Download or read book Women s Private Practices of Knowledge Production in Early Modern Europe written by Natacha Klein Käfer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores knowledge practices by five women from different European contexts. Contributors document, analyze, and discuss how women employed practices of privacy to pursue knowledge that did not necessarily conform with the curriculum prescribed for them. The practices of Jane Lumley in England, Camila Herculiana in Padua, Victorine de Chastenay in Paris, as well as Elisabeth Sophie Marie and Philippine Charlotte in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, will help us to exemplify the delicate balance between audacity and obedience that women had to employ to be able to explore science, literature, philosophy, theology, and other types of learned activities. Cases range from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, presenting continuities and discontinuities across temporal and geographical lines of the strategies that women used to protect their knowledge production and retain intact their reputations as good Christian daughters, wives, and mothers. Taken together, the essays show how having access to privacy—the ability to regulate access to themselves while studying and learning—was a crucial condition for the success of the knowledge activities these women pursued. This is an open access book.
Download or read book Postcolonial Hauntologies African Women s Discourses of the Female Bod written by Ayo A. Coly and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcolonial Hauntologies is an interdisciplinary and comparative analysis of critical, literary, visual, and performance texts by women from different parts of Africa. While contemporary critical thought and feminist theory have largely integrated the sexual female body into their disciplines, colonial representations of African women’s sexuality “haunt” contemporary postcolonial African scholarship which—by maintaining a culture of avoidance about women’s sexuality—generates a discursive conscription that ultimately holds the female body hostage. Ayo A. Coly employs the concept of “hauntology” and “ghostly matters” to formulate an explicative framework in which to examine postcolonial silences surrounding the African female body as well as a theoretical framework for discerning the elusive and cautious presences of female sexuality in the texts of African women. In illuminating the pervasive silence about the sexual female body in postcolonial African scholarship, Postcolonial Hauntologies challenges hostile responses to critical and artistic voices that suggest the African female body represents sacred ideological-discursive ground on which one treads carefully, if at all. Coly demonstrates how “ghosts” from the colonial past are countered by discursive engagements with explicit representations of women’s sexuality and bodies that emphasize African women’s power and autonomy.

This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at exploring the reciprocal interaction between art and culture, and specifically how the literary and artistic images of mid nineteenth-century Jewish female artists are interwoven with their factual lifestyles, self-representations, and the reception of their work. By analyzing the reciprocal relationship between the dominant culture in which they are embedded and their work, I show how the literary and artistic images of Jewish female artists (as depicted by Jews and non-Jews) are interwoven with the factual lifestyles, culture, and self-representations of real Jewish artists. Moreover, my research reveals how those representations are related to society’s centuries-long ambivalence towards Jews, and specifically towards Jewish female artists, as it is revealed in literature and art.

Download or read book Sarah Bowdich Lee 1791 1856 and Pioneering Perspectives on Natural History written by Mary Orr and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History from below uncovers overlooked protagonists contributing to (inter)national endeavour often against considerable odds. Mrs T. Edward Bowdich then Mrs R. Lee (1791–1856) is indicative. When women allegedly cannot participate in early nineteenth-century scientific exploration, discovery and publication, Sarah’s multiple specialist contributions to French and British natural history have attracted no book-length study. This first appraisal of Sarah’s unbroken production of discipline-changing scientific work over three decades – in modern ichthyology, in historical geography of West Africa and in the next-generational dissemination of expert scientific knowledge – does more than fill this gap. The book also pivotally investigates the intercultural, interdisciplinary and multi-genre reach of Sarah’s pioneering perspectives and contributions, and how she could achieve her work independently in her own name(s) over three decades. Sarah’s larger significance is then to provide a very different narrative for women at work in expert nineteenth-century natural history-making. By everywhere challenging the secondary, minor and domestic frames for women’s contributions of the period, the pioneering perspectives of Sarah’s story also provide alternative paradigms to the ‘leaky-pipeline’ modelstill informing women’s careers and work in STEM(M) today.
