Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ...for the taking of interest was excommunication and refusal of Christian burial, if restitution were not made. The Roman Catholic Church has not yielded as much to "the general corruption of man" as the Prosestant churches, yet they are no more consistent in practice, for the taking of interest is not confined to Prostestant lands. In fact the wealthy priesthood of both clrarches practice money loaning for an increase. Practically, the Roman Catholic Church has compromised with the cause of all evil, monev monopoly; but resists the evil this policy produces. She is unscientific. The Roman Catholic Church permits its flock to violate the sacred law, if they think the law of the state justifies it. The Protestant Church is more hypocritical; it approves the taking of lawful interest, as not being inconsistent with the teachings of Christ, or the will of God. As already stated. England and Massachusetts have repealed all usury laws, so now it is lawful to contract to pav any rate of interest. There can be no unlawful rate of interest in those countries, hence, according to the teachings of the Protestant churebes, usurv cannot prevail there; while in New York and many otber benie: hted places, usury is practiced, if the rate of interest is not lawful. Could mockery of divine justice be more flagrant? Could men in any other walks of life set a worse example or be more hypocritical? The church is now in league with mammon in the robbery of labor, as much as it was with African slavery, when Wendell Phillips was forced to say: "When I die I wish but two names engraved upon my toombstone, infidel and traitor, infidel to a church that can be at peace with the world in the presence of sin, and traitor to a government that is a...

Download or read book Markets written by William A. Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defining markets has never been an easy task. Despite their importance for economic theory and practice, they are hard to pin down as a concept and economists have tended to adopt simplified axiomatic models or rely on piecemeal case studies. This book argues that an extended range of theory, social as well as economic, can provide a better foundation for the portrayal of markets. The book first looks at the definition of markets, their inadequate treatment in orthodox economic theory, and their historical background in the pre-capitalist and capitalist eras. It then assesses various alternatives to orthodox theory, categorised as social/cultural, structural, functional and ethical approaches. Among the alternatives considered are institutionalist accounts, Marxian views, network models, performativity arguments, field theories, Austrian views and ethical notions of fair trade. A key finding of the book is that these diverse approaches, valuable as they are, could present a more effective challenge to orthodoxy if they were less disparate. Possibilities are investigated for a more unified theoretical alternative to orthodoxy. Unlike most studies of markets, this book adopts a fully interdisciplinary viewpoint expressed in accessible, non-technical language. Ideas are brought together from heterodox economics, social theory, critical realism, as well as other social sciences such as sociology, anthropology and geography. Anybody seeking a broad critical survey of the theoretical analysis of markets will find this book useful and it will be of great interest to economists, social scientists, students and policy-makers.

Book Money Markets and Trade in Early Southeast Asia

Download or read book Money Markets and Trade in Early Southeast Asia written by Robert S. Wicks and published by SEAP Publications. This book was released on 1992 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money places an explicit value on all things and this work by Robert S. Wicks explores the impact of monetization in premodern Southeast Asia from the third century BC to the rise of Maleka in the early fifteenth century. Ideas about money developed unevenly throughout the region and the author, in seven case studies written in a highly narrative style, explores why this was so. He considers trade policies, price controls, exchange ratios, monopolies, variant standards of value, and the administrative complexity necessary for such economic complexity. Reproduced data, maps, tables, and figures display the intertwining of anthropology, archeology, history, culture, and economics. -- Amazon.com.
