Download or read book Ham s Sin and Noah s Curse and BLESSING UTTERANCES written by Nicholas Oyugi Odhiambo and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis of this book is threefold. First, contrary to the increasingly popular understanding that the nature of Ham's offense was sexual, we argue that this offense was nonsexual, despite the presence of the phrase ("to see the nakedness of") in Genesis 9:22. More specifically, Ham's offense had less to do with seeing his father naked--the seeing was accidental. Rather, his fault lay with his choice to disclose to his brothers what he had seen as opposed to covering the nakedness of his father. Second, the most probable fulfillment of the Noah's curse is (1) the servitude of the Gibeonites; (2) the enslavement of the Canaanites following the conquest; or (3) the dominance of Rome and Greece over Tyre and Carthage, respectively. the events or phenomena least associated with the curse, in our view, are the following: (1) the service of the four kings in Genesis 14 under Chedorlaomer and the king of Tidal; (2) the subjection of the Egyptians and Babylonians by the Persians; (3) the forced corvée service of the Egyptians by Pharaoh; (4) the triumph of Israel over Egypt during the Exodus; (5) the enslavement of the Africans; and (6) the African's dark skin color. Third, whereas none of the proposals offered in regards to the phrase ("let him dwell in the tents of Shem") correlate well with the exegesis of the blessing utterance, we did find a viable candidate among the proposals related to the enlargement of Japheth, viz "geographical expansion."
Download or read book A Holy Baptism of Fire and Blood written by James P. Byrd and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In his Second Inaugural Address, Abraham Lincoln said both North and South 'read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other.' Lincoln quoted several biblical texts in this address--which, according to Frederick Douglass, 'sounded more like a sermon than a state paper.' The Bible, as Lincoln's famous speech illustrated, saturated the Civil War. In this book, James Byrd offers the most thorough analysis yet of how Americans enlisted scripture to fight the Civil War. As Byrd reveals in this insightful narrative, no book was more important to the Civil War than the Bible. From Massachusetts to Mississippi and beyond, the Bible was the nation's most read and most respected book. It brought to mind sacred history and sacrifice. It presented a drama of salvation and damnation, of providence and judgement. It was also a book of war. Americans cited the Bible in addressing many wartime issues, including slavery, secession, patriotism, federal versus state authority, white supremacy, and violence. In scripture, both Union and Confederate soldiers found inspiration for dying and killing like never before in the nation's history. With approximately 750,000 fatalities, the Civil War was the deadliest of the nation's wars. Americans fought the Civil War with Bibles in hand, with both sides calling the war just and sacred. This is a book about how Americans enlisted the Bible in the nation's most bloody, and arguably most biblically-saturated war"--

Download or read book Living on the Border of the Holy written by L. William Countryman and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I wish every self-identified ‘person of faith’ could read this remarkable, thought-provoking book.”—Bruce Bawer, author of Stealing Jesus There is a lot of tension in churches today about whose ministry is primary—that of the laity or of the clergy. Living on the Border of the Holy offers a way of understanding the priesthood of the whole people of God and the priesthood of the ordained by showing both are rooted in the fundamental priestly nature of life. After an exploration of the ministries of laity and ordained, Country examines the implications of this view of priesthood for churches and for those studying for ordination. “For anyone struggling with how to live in the thin places between heaven and earth, Dr. Countryman’s brilliant offer hope, companionship, and the fruits of years of experience. His theory of a ‘fundamental human priesthood’ gives us all a compassionate guide to follow as we enter the borderlands, and it should help end the division between clergy and laity. Countryman’s human priesthood leads us into the future, where God calls us to be.”—Nora Gallagher, author of Things Seen and Unseen: A Year Lived in Faith
