Bosnia and Herzegovina's centuries-old tradition of religious coexistence is rapidly disappearing. Memories of a time when people shared the same schools, office space and living conditions are slowly giving way to a fear of "the others." Some positive interactions still take place due to family ties from mixed marriages, economic interdependence and old, enduring friendships. However, some efforts of top religious leaders, similar to those of the nationalistic politicians, seem to be driving society in the opposite direction. Religious leaders have a multilayered agenda, only one layer being interreligious dialogue and coexistence. Instead of being an example of true Abrahamic spiritual leaders, they very often meddle in politics and pursue their own separate religious and political interests. Education in religious understanding is unstructured and in most areas nonexistent. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), an international organization with education as one of its major foci, suffers from the same weaknesses as other international organizations -- no institutional memory, no coordination nor any vision for the future. Book excerpt: Two decades after the war, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) still faces a weak national identity and ethnic and religious divisions that are further preventing the country from reaching sustainable peace and development. The education system is also divided along ethnic and religious lines. This study discusses research questions about challenges BiH has been facing on its way to peace transformation; about relation between the current educational system and development of sustainable peace in BiH; as well as to answer how to achieve positive and sustainable peace in BiH through peace education. In order to offer a peacebuilding framework the study offers an analysis of the role of education and educational programmes (formal and non-formal) in the creation of ethnic identity and peaceful coexistence in BiH since the Ottoman Empire until today. The study relies on interviews with stakeholders from BiH about gaps in the peacebuilding process, education system and suggestions for improvement.

Readers will learn that peace-building in BiH was motivated by the concepts of both care ethics and feminist ethics of justice and compassion, as well as the surviving socialist ethics of unity and equality, and by the universal human rights norms codified in the legal system of BiH. Most of the peace builders in this book are religious, but their religion came into play only later as one of many equally important and relevant rationales for their peace work. These stories do not present an idealized image of women or of perfect peace activists, but rather they tell the tale of ordinary women who bore witness to horror but chose to live in hope.

Book excerpt: Mitja Velikonja has written a comprehensive survey that examines how religion has interacted with other aspects of Bosnia-Herzegovina's history. Velikonja sees the former Ottoman borderland as a distinct cultural and religious entity where three major faiths -- Islam, Catholicism, and Orthodoxy -- managed to coexist in relative peace. It is only during the past century that competing nationalisms have led to persecution, ethnic cleansing, and mass murder. Emphasizing the importance of religion to nationalism as a symbol of collective identity that strengthens national identity, Velikonja notes that religious groups have a tendency to become isolated from one another. He believes Bosnia-Herzegovina was unique in its sarlikost, or diversity, because while religion defined ethnic communities there and kept them separate, it did not create a culture of intolerance. Rather than suppressing one another, the region's ethno-religious groups learned to cooperate and mediate their differences -- useful behavior in an area that served as buffer between East and West for most of its history. Velikonja believes that Bosnians went beyond tolerance to embrace synthetic, eclectic religious norms, with each religious group often borrowing customs and rituals from its rivals. Rather than the extreme orthodoxy evident elsewhere in Europe, Bosnia became the home of heterodoxy. Sadly, nationalism changed all that, and the area became the scene of systematic persecution, forced conversion, and mass slaughter. Velikonja considers the misfortunes suffered by the Bosnians during the 1990s as largely the result of actions by their neighbors and local militants and inaction by the international community.But he also sees the tragedy that unfolded as the result of the exploitation of ethno-religious differences and myths by Serbian chauvinists and Croatian nationalists.
