Book Currency Conflict and Trade Policy

Download or read book Currency Conflict and Trade Policy written by C. Fred Bergsten and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflicts over currency valuations are a recurrent feature of the modern global economy. To strengthen their international competitiveness, many countries resort to buying foreign currencies to make their exports cheaper and their imports more expensive. In the first decade of the 21st century, for example, China's currency manipulation practices were so flagrant that they produced a backlash in the United States and other trading partners, prompting threats of retaliation. How damaging is the practice of currency manipulation—and how extensive is the problem? This book by C. Fred Bergsten and Joseph E. Gagnon—two leading experts on trade, investment, and the effects of currency manipulation—traces the history, causes, and effects of currency manipulation and analyzes a range of policy responses that the United States could adopt. The book is an indispensable guide to a complex and serious problem and what might be done to solve it.

Book A Solution of the Currency Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Solution of the Currency Question Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Solution of the Currency Question IT is almost universally conceded that our National Currency, as at present in operation, does not meet the requirements of the community at all times; neither do the holders of Bank Notes possess an indefeasible security. The system is therefore unsatisfactory, and for many years there has existed an urgent demand for its reform, with an increasing conviction of its necessity. But how, and upon what basis, that-reform is to be effected has yet to be determined. The subject is of the utmost importance to a commercial community, for it controls and enters into the every day trans actions of the capitalist, the manufacturer, and the merchant. Indeed, there is no class of society in this empire that it does not deeply concern. It naturally excites astonishment in every mind of ordinary reflection, that the method by which a sound and sufficient currency may be permanently established is a question yet to be solved. The most profound writers on political economy, and many others, have endeavoured to do so, and many of them have given evidence of deep research, and profound thought. Yet, after all, they have left their subject as much confused as they found it. Many schemes have been proposed, but, as soon as known, have been condemned by universal consent. Book Controlling Currency Mismatches in Emerging Markets

Download or read book Controlling Currency Mismatches in Emerging Markets written by Morris Goldstein and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-25 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most of the currency crises of the 1990s, the largest output falls have occurred in those emerging economies with large currency mismatches, a phenomenon that occurs when assets and liabilities are denominated in different currencies such that net worth is sensitive to changes in the exchange rate. Currency mismatching makes crisis management much more difficult since it constrains the willingness of the monetary authority to reduce interest rates in a recession (for fear of initiating a large fall in the currency that would bring with it large-scale insolvencies). The mismatching also produces a "fear of floating" on the part of emerging economies, sometimes inducing them to make currency-regime choices that are not in their own long-term interest. Authors Morris Goldstein and Philip Turner summarize what is known about the origins of currency mismatching in emerging economies, discuss how best to define and measure currency mismatching, and review policy options for reducing the size of the problem.
