Book The Figure of Knowledge

Download or read book The Figure of Knowledge written by Sebastiaan Loosen and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a major challenge to write the history of post-WWII architectural theory without boiling it down to a few defining paradigms. An impressive anthologising effort during the 1990s charted architectural theory mostly via the various theoretical frameworks employed, such as critical theory, critical regionalism, deconstructivism, and pragmatism. Yet the intellectual contours of what constitutes architectural theory have been constantly in flux. It is therefore paramount to ask what kind of knowledge has become important in the recent history of architectural theory and how the resulting figure of knowledge sets the conditions for the actual arguments made. The contributions in this volume focus on institutional, geographical, rhetorical, and other conditioning factors. They thus screen the unspoken rules of engagement that postwar architectural theory ascribed to.

Book How Do I Imagine Being There

Download or read book How Do I Imagine Being There written by Claudia LOSI and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The untimely death of Robert Smithson in 1973 at age 34 robbed postwar American art of an unusually creative practitioner and thinker. Smithson's pioneering earthworks and installations of the 1960s and '70s anticipated concerns with environmentalism and site-specific artistic production. Gary Shapiro's insightful study of Smithson's career is the first book to address the full range of the artist's dazzling virtuosity.

Book The Curatorial

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean-Paul Martinon
  • Publisher : A&C Black
  • Release : 2013-10-24
  • ISBN : 1472523164
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book The Curatorial written by Jean-Paul Martinon and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stop curating! And think what curating is all about. This book starts from this simple premise: thinking the activity of curating. To do that, it distinguishes between 'curating' and 'the curatorial'. If 'curating' is a gamut of professional practices for setting up exhibitions, then 'the curatorial' explores what takes place on the stage set up, both intentionally and unintentionally, by the curator. It therefore refers not to the staging of an event, but to the event of knowledge itself. In order to start thinking about curating, this book takes a new approach to the topic. Instead of relying on conventional art historical narratives (for example, identifying the moments when artistic and curatorial practices merged or when the global curator-author was first identified), this book puts forward a multiplicity of perspectives that go from the anecdotal to the theoretical and from the personal to the philosophical. These perspectives allow for a fresh reflection on curating, one in which, suddenly, curating becomes an activity that implicates us all (artists, curators, and viewers), not just as passive recipients, but as active members. As such, the Curatorial is a book without compromise: it asks us to think again, fight against sweeping art historical generalizations, the sedimentation of ideas and the draw of the sound bite. Curating will not stop, but at least with this book it can begin to allow itself to be challenged by some of the most complex and ethics-driven thought of our times.

Book Breaking the Barrier

Download or read book Breaking the Barrier written by Lawrence Goodwyn and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last year the world has been electrified as one Soviet bloc government after another has collapsed. But ten years before the events of the past year came the first successful challenge to the Leninist state--the shipworker's strike in Gdansk, which led to the first free trade union in the communist world. Here is a fascinating history of the Solidarity movement.

Book Robert Smithson

  • Author : Robert A. Sobieszek
  • Publisher : Angeles County Museum of Art
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Robert Smithson written by Robert A. Sobieszek and published by Angeles County Museum of Art. This book was released on 1993 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There have been other exhibitions of his works, but Robert Smithson: Photo Works is the first to examine his use of the camera and to present the way he saw the unique landscapes in which he traveled and located his art. As demonstrated by curator of photography Robert A. Sobieszek, the photographic image was central to Smithson's art, whether in collages, montages, sequences, films, or alone. Smithson's final projects attempted a collaboration art and industry. He believed artists could assist in reclaiming such devastated areas as open-face strip mines. Our expanding presence in and impact upon the land may have become so pervasive that the boundaries between nature and culture have been all but obliterated. Now two decades after his death, Robert Smithson's lessons are all the more vital and significant."-from preface.
