Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cure of Souls: Lyman Beecher Lectures on Preaching at Yale University, 1896 IT was the excellent custom of a Theological College which from time to time has sent forth learned and brilliant scholars as well as many ordinary men, to invite ministers of age and reputation to inform the students on the practical work of their calling. Their addresses used to fill the College with admiration, be cause of the eloquence and distinction of the speakers, but one student they reduced to de spair. He had secretly hoped for some ac count oi the difficulties and dangers which were likely to beset the path of one who, like him self, represented the average man. Book The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions Volume III

Download or read book The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions Volume III written by Timothy Larsen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five-volume Oxford History of Dissenting Protestant Traditions series is governed by a motif of migration ('out-of-England'). It first traces organized church traditions that arose in England as Dissenters distanced themselves from a state church defined by diocesan episcopacy, the Book of Common Prayer, the Thirty-Nine Articles, and royal supremacy, but then follows those traditions as they spread beyond England -and also traces newer traditions that emerged downstream in other parts of the world from earlier forms of Dissent. Secondly, it does the same for the doctrines, church practices, stances toward state and society, attitudes toward Scripture, and characteristic patterns of organization that also originated in earlier English Dissent, but that have often defined a trajectory of influence independent ecclesiastical organizations. The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions, Volume III considers the Dissenting traditions of the United Kingdom, the British Empire, and the United States in the nineteenth century. It provides an overview of the historiography on Dissent while making the case for seeing Dissenters in different Anglophone connections as interconnected and conscious of their genealogical connections. The nineteenth century saw the creation of a vast Anglo-world which also brought Anglophone Dissent to its apogee. Featuring contributions from a team of leading scholars, the volume illustrates that in most parts of the world the later nineteenth century was marked by a growing enthusiasm for the moral and educational activism of the state which plays against the idea of Dissent as a static, purely negative identity. This collection shows that Dissent was a political and constitutional identity, which was often only strong where a dominant Church of England existed to dissent against.

Book The Psychological Anthropology of Wayne Edward Oates

Download or read book The Psychological Anthropology of Wayne Edward Oates written by Samuel E. Stephens and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theological education has historically placed a strong emphasis on Scripture as the source of principle and practice for ministry. However, when it comes to the arena of counseling, this has largely not been the case. Focusing on the significant influence of Wayne Edward Oates (1917–1999), the author seeks to explore how and why the American Protestant church arrived at the place where psychological counseling has become the norm and biblical counseling is treated as novel. A detailed study of Oates’ anthropology, which served as the heart of his counseling theory and practice, demonstrates that it was shaped and informed by secular concepts, values, and principles instead of what God has to say about who we are as people, what plagues our souls, and where we find our true hope and healing. This subtle shift from the theological to the therapeutic has contributed to a much broader view from many in the church that counseling is more of a clinical and professional service rather than a personal or pastoral ministry of the Scriptures. Through these unsettling warnings and implications, the author hopes that the church will see the importance of once again engaging with the God-glorifying, Christ-honoring, and Spirit-empowering ministry of counseling.
