Book The Representation of Cumulus Convection in Numerical Models

Download or read book The Representation of Cumulus Convection in Numerical Models written by Kerry Emanuel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents descriptions of numerical models for testing cumulus in cloud fields. It is divided into six parts. Part I provides an overview of the problem, including descriptions of cumulus clouds and the effects of ensembles of cumulus clouds on mass, momentum, and vorticity distributions. A review of closure assumptions is also provided. A review of "classical" convection schemes in widespread use is provided in Part II. The special problems associated with the representation of convection in mesoscale models are discussed in Part III, along with descriptions of some of the commonly used mesoscale schemes. Part IV covers some of the problems associated with the representation of convection in climate models, while the parameterization of slantwise convection is the subject of Part V.

Book Clouds and Storms

    Book Details:
  • Author : F. H. Ludlam
  • Publisher : Penn State University Press
  • Release : 1980
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 496 pages

Download or read book Clouds and Storms written by F. H. Ludlam and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water in the atmosphere and its influence on the motion of the atmosphere--the physics of clouds and precipitation--are comprehensively treated here in this final work by a master of the subject. Frank Ludlam's broad background and illuminating style have combined to produce an integrated picture of atmospheric processes, tying together the many interrelated aspects of dynamical meteorology, synoptic meteorology, and cloud physics. This book presents a synthesis of cloud physics, ranging from the microphysics which control particle growth through the large-scale dynamics of the atmosphere controlling air motion. The physical processes, from radiation to the interaction of cloud droplets, along with methods and interpretations of measurements, are discussed in a precise, compact style. The mathematical analysis is clear, and the exposition conveys a three-dimensional picture of airflow in an unusually lucid manner. Numerous line drawings, map analyses, and photographs aid the reader in visualizing the processes and phenomena discussed. This book is a reference and text for all atmospheric scientists and scholars in related fields as well as a guidebook for those who would like to understand something of the nature and the complexity of weather and climate. It will help the specialist put his specialty in perspective; it will help the forecaster relate weather to large-scale dynamics. And through his extraordinary style, Frank Ludlam was capable of conveying to all readers his joy in the beauty of a sunset.

  • Release : 2002-09-25
  • ISBN : 9783540437475
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The Future of the Oocyte written by John Eppig and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-09-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first successful transfer of an in vitro fertilised human egg in 1976, modern endocrinology, genetics, and assisted reproductive technologies have opened new frontiers of research with the aim to treat infertile women. In this workshop we set out to promote an interdisciplinary discussion between experts from various fields of basic, company-based and clinical research related to folliculogenesis and oocyte development. The aim of this workshop was to present, discuss and assess novel approaches in mammalian folliculogenesis and oocyte development that may have an impact on fertility/ infertility in the near or distant future. Key issues were the understanding of new modulators of folliculogenesis and regulators of cytoplasmic as well as meiotic oocyte maturation, modern technologies, the aging oocyte and pathogenetic mechanisms of infertility.

Book Human Sperm Acrosome Reaction

Download or read book Human Sperm Acrosome Reaction written by Patrick Fénichel and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 1995 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable reference work provides a synthesis of the latest knowledge about the acrosomatic reaction of human sperm. The acrosomatic reaction, which is a fundamental step in the process of fertilisation, is examined on both the fundamental and clinical levels. Three very recent aspects are also dealt with: what happens to the acrosome during intracytoplasmic microinjections, the usefulness of screening spermatozoa that have completed their acrosomatic reaction, and the development of contraception by a vaccine that targets one of the proteins of the acrosome. International Symposium, Collioure, France, September 1995.

Book The Era of Assisted Reproductive Technologies Tailored to the Specific Necessities of Species Industry and Case Reports

Download or read book The Era of Assisted Reproductive Technologies Tailored to the Specific Necessities of Species Industry and Case Reports written by David Martín Hidalgo and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) have a pivotal role not only in achieving fertilization in subfertile animals, but they are also involved in the management of the herd, decreasing disease spread and even allowing offspring sex selection. Nonetheless, there are differences between species or even within species that have led researchers worldwide to focus on those differences in order to bypass these specific difficulties. This Special Issue, titled “The Era of Assisted Reproductive Technologies Tailored to the Specific Necessities of Species, Industry and Case Reports” and published in Animals, is composed of 12 original manuscripts and three reviews that offer an overview of current and future ARTs used to improve reproductive outcomes, mainly focused on farm animals, such as horse, pig, bovine, rabbit and ovine species. Thus, the Special Issue covers information from the classical point of view, including comparative studies of different semen extenders, to the most advanced technologies of sperm selection by thermotaxis or chemoattractants, as well as the improvement of sperm features by red light irradiation. The female and embryo contributions to ART outcomes are also covered, for instance, with a study that improves our knowledge by the metabolomic description of follicular fluid composition or the description of better culture conditions of oocytes. In brief, this Special Issue provides a balanced overview of emerging techniques and technologies used to preserve, improve, rescue or even create fertility for domestic farm animals with high economic impact.
