Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The only work of its kind, this comprehensive and systematic two-volume publication examines 1,400 years of Tibet's cultural heritage in art and architecture. Focusing on Central and Southern Tibet, these two beautifully illustrated volumes are the product not only of years of scholarship but also, importantly, of the many visits and field research trips the author made over the last twenty-five years. Providing a fundamental work of reference, they include over 1,100 illustrations, most of them recent photographs by the author, and many rare and previously unpublished historical photographs, as well as over 100 architectural plans and drawings. Detailed descriptions and interpretations of the buildings, art, and furnishings of all major monasteries and significant secular buildings, as well as numerous references to both historical Tibetan, Sanskrit, and Chinese texts and to works of scholarly research in the West and in China, make this work a unique source of information for both the specialist and the general reader. This extensive documentation on the sacred art and monuments of Buddhist Tibet also provides a deeply researched history of the cultural and religious circumstances in which the sites and relics were created."--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering work documents cultural and religious sites across the Tibetan Plateau and its bordering regions from the Paleolithic Era to today. Western fascination with Tibet has soared in recent decades, yet this historic and globally celebrated region has barely been mapped. With this groundbreaking atlas, Karl E. Ryavec sweeps aside the image of Tibet as Shangri-La, offering a comprehensive vision of the region as it really is. The product of twelve years of research and eight more of mapmaking, the results are absolutely stunning. A Historical Atlas of Tibet ranges through the five main periods in Tibetan history, offering introductory maps of each followed by details of western, central, and eastern regions. It beautifully visualizes the history of Tibetan Buddhism, tracing its spread throughout Asia, with thousands of temples mapped, both within Tibet and across North China and Mongolia, all the way to Beijing. There are maps of major polities and their territorial administrations, as well as of the kingdoms of Guge and Purang in western Tibet, and of Derge and Nangchen in Kham. There are town plans of Lhasa and maps that focus on history and language, on population, natural resources, and contemporary politics. Extraordinarily comprehensive and absolutely gorgeous, this volume makes a major contribution in the realms of cartography, Asian studies, and Buddhist studies.

Book A Cultural History of Tibet

Book excerpt: "In their discussion of the three major periods of Tibetan history, the authors draw parallels with the structure of life in England and Western Europe. Strong analogies breakdown with the European Renaissance, a cultural development that Tibet, of course, did not experience. A final section focuses on Tibet's belated emergence into modern times, ending with its subjugation by the Chinese Communists"--

Book The Afterlives of Monuments

Download or read book The Afterlives of Monuments written by Deborah Cherry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asia is famous for its monuments, past and present. Monuments have been created, destroyed and rescued by competing communities and incoming empires in the making and re-making of history, identity and memory. This collection brings together an international cohort of senior scholars and younger researchers to examine the vast diversity of monuments (and conceptions of monuments) in South Asia from the 1850s to the present. The chapters investigate what constitutes a monument, and interrogate the conditions for its survival, demise or recycling. To explore the afterlives of monuments is to investigate how, where, when, and why monuments have been remodelled, re-sited, destroyed, defaced, or abandoned. It is to investigate the theories of memory, history and community, as well as new forms of artistic practice and global media. As different South-Asian communities claim a stake in the making of national, religious, cultural and local identities and histories, the status of monuments and debates about cultural memory have become increasingly urgent. This book was published as a special issue of South Asian Studies.
