Book excerpt: A “fun, fanciful, and even informative” history of felines as revealed by a very learned tabby with a knack for hunting down facts (People). Since the dawn of civilization, felines have prowled alongside mankind as they expanded their territory and spread the myth of human greatness. And today, cats are peddled on social media as silly creatures here to amuse humans with their antics. But this is an absurd, self-centered fantasy. The true history of felines is one of heroism, love, tragedy, sacrifice, and gravitas. Not entirely convinced? Well, get ready, because Baba the Cat is here to set the record straight. Spanning almost every continent and thousands—yes, thousands—of years, Baba’s complex story of feline survival presents readers with a diverse cast of cats long forgotten: from her prehistoric feline ancestors and the ancient Egyptian cat goddess Bastet to the daring mariners at the height of oceanic discovery, key intellectuals in the Enlightenment period, revered heroes from World Wars I and II, and the infamous American tabbies. Baba, a talented model in addition to a scholar, goes beyond surface-level scratches, pairing her freshly unearthed research with a series of stunning costume portraits to bring history to life. A paws-on journey through the feline hall of fame, with in-depth research and four-legged testaments that will make you rethink who defines history, A Cat’s Tale is a one-of-a-kind chronicle that introduces readers to the illustrious ancestors of their closest companions and shows, once and for all, that cats know exactly what they’re doing. “Almost certainly the most unique cat history book ever published.” —Smithsonian Magazine

Book A Book of Cats

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dorothy Margaret Stuart
  • Publisher : Fonthill Media
  • Release : 2017-04-20
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 120 pages

Download or read book A Book of Cats written by Dorothy Margaret Stuart and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cat -- a goddess, an enigma, a playmate and a friend. Dorothy M. Stuart approaches her subject along four main roads: archaeology, history, legend and literature. The Ancient Egyptian Mau is here; the enchanted cats of Irish legend; the Gib of Gammer Gurton s Needle. Hodge and Selima, Jeffry and Dinah refused to be left out; but there are less familiar examples, too: the cat which voluntarily shared the Earl of Southampton s captivity in the Tower; the kitten in whose defence John Keats had a stand up fight with a brutal butcher-boy of Hampstead; the delinquent who at dead of night gnawed the strings of her master s lute. Graymalkin, the witches familiar, comes into the picture; and we catch fascinating glimpses of two furry sympathizers licking the tears from Florence Nightingale s cheeks, and of Cardinal Richelieu solemnly adding something on behalf of a cat and her kittens to the modest pension assigned by His Eminence to Mademoiselle Marie de Gournay, Montaigne s polished female friend. Dorothy M. Stuart is better known for her elegant and polished biographies, but in this short book we see a lighter side of her pen in an appreciation of feline company.

Book Classical Cats

  • Author : Donald W. Engels
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2018-10-03
  • ISBN : 1134692862
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Classical Cats written by Donald W. Engels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the definitive book on classical cats. The cat has played a significant role in history from the earliest times. Well known is its role in the religion and art of ancient Egypt, no less than its association with witchcraft in the Middle Ages. But when did the cat become a domestic companion and worker as well? There has been much debate about the position of the cat in ancient Greece and Rome. Artistic representations are sometimes ambiguous, and its role as a mouse-catcher seems often to have been carried out by weasels. Yet other evidence clearly suggests that the cat was as important to Greeks and Romans as it is to many modern people. This book is the first comprehensive survey of the evidence for cats in Greece and Rome, and of their functions and representations in art. Donald Engels draws on authors from Aesop to Aristotle; on vase-painting, inscriptions and the plastic arts; and on a thorough knowledge of zoology of the cat. He also sets the ancient evidence in the wider context of the Egyptian period that preceded it, as well as the views of the Church fathers who ushered antiquity into the Middle Ages.

Book Mouse vs Cat in Chinese Literature

Download or read book Mouse vs Cat in Chinese Literature written by and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2019-03-18 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In literatures worldwide, animal fables have been analyzed for their revealingly anthropomorphic views, but until now little attention has been given to the animal tales of China. The complex, competitive relationship between rodents (vilified as thieves of grain) and the felines with whom they are perennially at war is explored in this presentation of Chinese tales about cats and mice. Master translator Wilt Idema situates them in an overview of animal tales in world literature, in the Chinese literary tradition as a whole, and within Chinese imaginative depictions of animals. The tales demonstrate the animals’ symbolism and their unusually prominent—and verbal—role in the stories. These readings depict cats and mice in conflict, in marital bonds, and in litigation—most centrally in a legal case of a mouse against a cat in the underworld court of King Yama. Many of the stories adopt the perspective of the mice as animals merely trying to survive, while also recognizing that cats are natural hunters. This entertaining volume will appeal to readers interested in Chinese literature and society, comparative literature, and posthumanist consideration of human-animal relations.

A book full with pictures of the most important cat breeds, tips and advice for cat behavior, cat diseases and how to take care of the cats. The cat, also called the domestic cat or house cat, is a small feline carnivorous mammal of the subspecies Felis silvestris catus. Its most immediate pre-domestication ancestor is the African wild cat, Felis silvestris lybica. The cat has been living in close association with humans for at least 3,500 years; the Ancient Egyptians routinely used cats to keep mice and other rodents (mostly rats) away from their grain (and also believed that cats were sacred to the goddess Bastet). The history of the domestic cat may stretch back even further, as 8,000-year-old bones of humans and cats were found buried together on the island of Cyprus.

Book excerpt: In a small town like Chesterville, homicides are as rare as government grants. So it's not surprising that the violent death of the richest man in town, J A Bussières, shakes up the entire population: who could hate the man enough to murder him, one rainy night, in the local cemetery? Roméo Dubuc, the Chief of Police, heads up the investigation. Several suspects have motives. Is it just a coincidence that J A's son, who hated his father, escaped from the psychiatric hospital the very day his father died? Was Marguerita Bussières tired of having a husband who cheated on her? Did Talbot, the grocer, a man with a violent temper, finally act on his threats against the man who was pursuing his young daughter? He had already told people he'd wring Bussières's neck if he kept it up. And then there's Jerrry Ménard: did the small-time bar owner stand to make a handsome profit from his financeer's death? In this detective novel, Dubuc's nose is to the grindstone as he tries to sift through the clues.
