Book Australian Rainforest Woods

Download or read book Australian Rainforest Woods written by Morris Lake and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2015-05-25 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Rainforest Woods describes 141 of the most significant Australian rainforest trees and their wood. The introductory sections draw the reader into an understanding of the botanical, evolutionary, environmental, historical and international significance of this beautiful but finite Australian resource. The main section examines the species and their wood with photographs, botanical descriptions and a summary of the characteristics of the wood. A section on wood identification includes fundamental information on tree growth and wood structure, as well as images of the basic characteristics. With more than 900 colour images, this is the most comprehensive guide ever written on Australian rainforest woods, both for the amateur and the professional wood enthusiast. It is the first time that macrophotographs of the wood have been shown in association with a physical description of wood characteristics, which will aid identification. This technique was developed by Jean-Claude Cerre, France, and his macrophotographs are included in the book.

Book The Conservation of Medieval Polychrome Wood Sculpture

Download or read book The Conservation of Medieval Polychrome Wood Sculpture written by Michele D. Marincola and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English-language book to comprehensively discuss the history and methodology of conserving medieval polychrome wood sculpture. Medieval polychrome wood sculptures are highly complex objects, bearers of histories that begin with their original carving and adornment and continue through long centuries of repainting, deterioration, restoration, and conservation. Abundantly illustrated, this book is the first in English to offer a comprehensive overview of the conservation of medieval painted wood sculpture for conservators, curators, and others charged with their care. Beginning with an illuminating discussion of the history, techniques, and meanings of these works, it continues with their examination and documentation, including chapters on the identification of both the wooden support and the polychromy itself—the paint layers, metal leaf, and other materials used for these sculptures. The volume also covers the many aspects of treatment: the process of determining the best approach; consolidation and adhesion of paint, ground, and support; overpaint removal and surface cleaning; and compensation. Four case studies on artworks in the collection of The Cloisters in New York, a comprehensive bibliography, and a checklist to aid in documentation complement the text.

Book CSIRO Atlas of Hardwoods

Download or read book CSIRO Atlas of Hardwoods written by Jugoslav Ilic and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing nearly 9000 photomicrographs of hardwood sections - nearly half in colour - this atlas is a break-through in the field of wood structure. It allows identification of over 80 % of the world's commercial hardwoods, by matching or confirming wood structure, using a hardwood key. The first part, Macro, contains 1274 species showing their cleanly cut endgrain. The second part, Micro, shows microscopic sections of the transverse, tangential longitudinal and radial longitudinal surfaces of 1754 species. All species are organized alphabetically by botanical family, genus and species. The photomicrographs are prepared from authentic samples representative of each species illustrating their distinctive features. Each species in the atlas is referenced by its botanical name, family name, as well as a number of common, trade or other names. This publication will be particularly useful for professional wood anatomists, students of wood anatomy, timber restorers, museum curators, forensic and wood research scientists, maritime archaeologists and all other people interested in collecting and identifying hardwood samples.
