Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the world woke up on that vibrant spring day, no one knew about the imminent danger threatening their existence. No one knew they had only one day left. And no one knew the fate of the world rested in the hands of five children who had no idea what they were getting into. On the morning of Zoe Marshall’s thirteenth birthday, everything goes horribly wrong. She wakes up late, gets yelled at by the principal, and ends up in detention for something she didn’t do. But all that changes when two bizarre individuals with perplexing backstories show up at her school, claiming that she and her best friend are part of an elite group of Elementals. Zoe is dumped through a black hole into a magical land, where she must complete a Quest that entails fighting ferocious demons, earning a prophecy from a talking elf, and not dying. (She considers the last part to be kind of important.) When betrayal is in the air, and riddles are the new tools to save the world, can Zoe and her friends save the world from its horrendous fate of death by asphyxiation? Or will they be too late?

Book Making a Point

Download or read book Making a Point written by David Crystal and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The triumphant concluding volume in David Crystal's classic trilogy on the English language combines the first history of English punctuation with a complete guide on how to use it. Behind every punctuation mark lies a thousand stories. The punctuation of English, marked with occasional rationality, is founded on arbitrariness and littered with oddities. For a system of a few dozen marks it generates a disproportionate degree of uncertainty and passion, inspiring organizations like the Apostrophe Protection Society and sending enthusiasts, correction-pens in hand, in a crusade against error across the United States. Professor Crystal leads us through this minefield with characteristic wit, clarity, and commonsense. In David Crystal's Making a Point, he gives a fascinating account of the origin and progress of every kind of punctuation mark over one and a half millennia and offers sound advice on how punctuation may be used to meet the needs of every occasion and context.

Download or read book The Glass Church written by Mark T. Mulder and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert H. Schuller’s ministry—including the architectural wonder of the Crystal Cathedral and the polished television broadcast of Hour of Power—cast a broad shadow over American Christianity. Pastors flocked to Southern California to learn Schuller’s techniques. The President of United States invited him sit prominently next to the First Lady at the State of the Union Address. Muhammad Ali asked for the pastor’s autograph. It seemed as if Schuller may have started a second Reformation. And then it all went away. As Schuller’s ministry wrestled with internal turmoil and bankruptcy, his emulators—including Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, and Joel Osteen— nurtured megachurches that seemed to sweep away the Crystal Cathedral as a relic of the twentieth century. How did it come to this? Certainly, all churches depend on a mix of constituents, charisma, and capital, yet the size and ambition of large churches like Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral exert enormous organizational pressures to continue the flow of people committed to the congregation, to reinforce the spark of charismatic excitement generated by high-profile pastors, and to develop fresh flows of capital funding for maintenance of old projects and launching new initiatives. The constant attention to expand constituencies, boost charisma, and stimulate capital among megachurches produces an especially burdensome strain on their leaders. By orienting an approach to the collapse of the Crystal Cathedral on these three core elements—constituency, charisma, and capital—The Glass Church demonstrates how congregational fragility is greatly accentuated in larger churches, a notion we label megachurch strain, such that the threat of implosion is significantly accentuated by any failures to properly calibrate the inter-relationship among these elements.

Book Department for Work and Pensions

Download or read book Department for Work and Pensions written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-01-23 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) provides services to some 28 million people and, despite the development of new technology, printed materials such as leaflets play an important role in ensuring that customers are informed of services and entitlements. Following on from a NAO report (HC 797, session 2005-06; ISBN 9780102936728) published in January 2006, the Committee's report focuses on three issues: managing the process for producing accurate leaflets; accessibility of information for a diverse range of customers; and making information available to the public. Findings include: i) the DWP has reduced its total number of published leaflets from 245 to 178 and is committed to making an overall reduction of 100; ii) the DWP is unable to determine the exact cost of producing leaflets, which has been estimated at £31 million in 2004-05; iii) around 40 per cent of the 27 different leaflets tested by the NAO across the country were out of date, and all 13 of the Department's key leaflets tested required a reading age higher than the national average; and iv) leaflets are not easily accessible to groups such as those with disabilities or non-English speakers, and copies of four core departmental leaflets examined were available at only 11 per cent of key non-departmental locations such as libraries and Citizens' Advice offices visited by the NAO.

Book Aspects of Safety Management

Download or read book Aspects of Safety Management written by Felix Redmill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aspects of Safety Management contains the invited papers presented at the ninth annual Safety-critical Systems Symposium, held in Bristol, February 2001. For some time, it has been recognised that technical issues are only one side of the safety coin. The other, often dominant feature, is active, informed and committed management. An understanding of risk, emphasis on education and the use of language, attention to learning lessons from both research and other industry sectors, and the development of the appropriate staff competences, are all aspects of safety management. The papers contained within this volume cover a broad range of subjects, but all have the common link of safety management. They present a great deal of industrial experience, as well as some recent academic research.
