Book excerpt: The Crying Tree Diary is a cradle-to-grave diary of a battered child. It is the voice of this work that makes it so compelling. At first, the voice is inexperienced, the words raw and discordant like the beginning of a storm. The storm gathers; the voice becomes rhythmic in the daily telling of the main character’s life. Finally, the voice emerges as glimmer on the horizon, and the reader is assured the storm will pass when Julie Anna looks beyond the clouds and prays for peace.

Book The New Guinea Diaries 1871 1883

Download or read book The New Guinea Diaries 1871 1883 written by N N Miklouho-Maclay and published by ETT Imprint. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pioneering ecologist and humanist N. N. Miklouho-Maclay lived at a time of great colonial and industrial expansion; he was a pupil of the German philosopher Ernst Haeckel. To prove that the people of all races are equally human, Maclay went to the island of New Guinea (1870), the first white man to do so and stayed years with native Papuans while the rest of the world presumed he had been eaten. His diaries are testimony to his time in New Guinea where he observed a native culture untouched by the outside world. Maclay describes his first meeting with the natives; "A few Papuans moved closer to me. Suddenly two arrows flashed in rapid succession close by me... As the first arrow passed me by, the eyes of many natives were fixed upon me, trying to read the impressions in my face; except for fatigue and curiosity, registered I no emotion." He was instead befriended by the Papuans; they called him Tamo Russ, believing that he had descended from the moon. The diaries were originally edited with the help of Russian author Leo Tolstoy. The books sold millions of copies in Eastern Europe. Maclay tried hard to save Papuans and their traditional culture and died disillusioned at the age of 42. He tried to revise Darwin's theory of the selection of the species and challenged the idea that certain races of people are born genetically superior. The New Guinea Diaries provide an authentic portrait of a timeless, sustainable and egalitarian tribal society before the Europeans moved into the area. The book is illustrated with original drawings made by Maclay during his New Guinean expedition.

Shortly after Irene and Nate Stanley move to Oregon with their two children, Bliss and Shep, the unthinkable happens: Fifteen-year-old Shep is shot and killed during an apparent robbery in their home. The murderer, a young mechanic with a history of assault, robbery, and drug-related offenses, is caught and sentenced to death. Shep’s murder sends the Stanley family into a tailspin, with each member attempting to cope with the tragedy in his or her own way. Irene lives week after week, waiting for Daniel Robbin’s execution and the justice she feels she and her family deserve. The weeks turn into months and then years. Ultimately, faced with a growing sense that Robbin’s death will not stop her pain, Irene takes the extraordinary and clandestine step of reaching out to her son’s killer. Years later, Irene receives the notice that she had craved for so long—Daniel Robbin has stopped his appeals and will be executed within a month. This announcement shakes the very core of the Stanley family. Irene, it turns out, isn’t the only one with a shocking secret to hide. And as the execution date nears, the Stanleys must face difficult truths to find a way to come to terms with the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Cry of the Senses, Ren Ellis Neyra examines the imaginative possibility for sound and poetics to foster new modes of sensorial solidarity in the Caribbean Americas. Weaving together the black radical tradition with Caribbean and Latinx performance, cinema, music, and literature, Ellis Neyra highlights the ways Latinx and Caribbean sonic practices challenge antiblack, colonial, post-Enlightenment, and humanist epistemologies. They locate and address the sonic in its myriad manifestations—across genres and forms, in a legal trial, and in the art and writing of Xandra Ibarra, the Fania All-Stars, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, Édouard Glissant, and Eduardo Corral—while demonstrating how it operates as a raucous form of diasporic dissent and connectivity. Throughout, Ellis Neyra emphasizes Caribbean and Latinx sensorial practices while attuning readers to the many forms of blackness and queerness. Tracking the sonic through their method of multisensorial, poetic listening, Ellis Neyra shows how attending to the senses can inspire alternate, ethical ways of collective listening and being.
