Book The Crusades and their Sources

Download or read book The Crusades and their Sources written by John France and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with the sources for the study of the Crusades, conceived in terms of the records of their history and of their enemies, the motives that inspired them, and the monuments which they left behind. Some of the studies analyse particular historical sources, both written and visual, for the events of the Crusades and the history of the Crusader states. Others look more broadly at the impact of the Crusading movement in the West, its origins and its propaganda, from the First Crusade to the time of Erasmus.

Book excerpt: During the Central Middle Ages Catholics had the opportunity to take part in Holy War in the Latin East in two different but related ways, by taking the Cross and by entering the Order of the Temple. Both crusaders and Knights Templar were dubbed by contemporary panegyrists milites Christi, knights engaged in combat for the cause of Christ. On numerous battlefields in the Middle East crusaders and Templars fought side by side. By the late thirteenth century both modes of Holy War faced critical situations. Crusading failed to save the mainland states of Palestine and Syria from Muslim conquest in 1291, while the Knights Templar entered a period of internal demoralisation and external attack that culminated in the suppression of their Order in 1312. This collection of essays by distinguished historians of the Crusades and the Order of the Temple covers the whole span of their historical evolution and offers numerous insights into the ideologies, practicalities and ramifications of Christian Holy War in the Middle Ages.

Book Essays on the Crusades Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays on the Crusades Classic Reprint written by Dana Carleton Munro and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Crusades A hundred years ago the French Academy offered a prize for the best work on the influence of the crusades. This offer produced two volumes, by Heeren and Choiseul-Daillecourt, which attracted much attention. But the action of the Academy was premature; at that time it was not possible to discuss the subject in a satisfactory manner. The necessary preliminary work in editing and criticizing the sources had scarcely been begun. Realizing this, Ranke, some thirty years later, chose the sources for the first crusade as the subject for his seminar work. The outcome was the "Geschichte des ersten Kreuzzugs," published by Sybel, who had been one of Ranke's pupils. This placed the whole study of the crusades on a new basis, as Sybel demonstrated conclusively the unreliability of William of Tyre's account of the first crusade, on which earlier writers had relied. Some of Sybel's other statements aroused opposition which led to more careful study. About the middle of the nineteenth century a group of able French scholars began the publication of the "Recueil des Historiens des Croisades." Up to the present time there have been published in this series fourteen large folio volumes, including Western, Greek, Arabic, Armenian, and legal sources. In addition other sources in each field have been edited critically. So that now, although much still remains to be done we have a large body of trustworthy material for the history of the crusades.
