Book excerpt: Curtis Hinshaw argues that we must make a concerted effort to give to the poor, though not for the reasons you may think. As a lifelong conservative himself, he expects some conservatives may think he’s selling out—or even that he’s a closet liberal trying to pilfer everyone out of money by selling a book. There could be nothing further from the truth. The reality is he’s concluded that we need to do more for the least of these. The Bible tells us so and is downright serious about it. The Bible doesn’t say it’s the government’s job to give to the poor and needy—it says it’s our job. Since government programs help our less privileged quite a bit, it makes our job easier because there aren’t as many desperately poor, like Lazarus, or at least they aren’t as obvious as Lazarus with all his sores laying at the gate. However, we must help them. The rich man in this book is more like you than you’d like to believe. He, like many of us, thinks he can ignore the poor without consequence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prairie Home Breads proves that not only is the Midwest where America's grains are grown, but it's also where the art of bread baking is taken seriously. To create these 150 recipes, Judith M. Fertig visited artisanal bakeries, working farmhouse kitchens, rural church suppers, urban bakeries, farmer's markets, and typical home kitchens. She found yeast breads as varied as Amish Pinwheel Bread and Roasted Sweet Pepper Bread, as well as naturally leavened breads like Brewhouse Bread and whole grain breads like Northern Prairie Barley Bread. There are also buns and rolls, as well as quick biscuits, popovers, and crackers. Along with elegant tea breads and homey muffins there are scrumptious coffeecakes, kuchens, and strudels. Last but not least, there are recipes for accompaniments and for using up leftovers. Prairie Home Breads is also filled with rich stories of ethnic and regional culture, agriculture, Midwestern culinary traditions, and warm celebrations of Heartland food.

Book The New Southern Garden Cookbook

Download or read book The New Southern Garden Cookbook written by Sheri Castle and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The New Southern Garden Cookbook, Sheri Castle aims to make "what's in season" the answer to "what's for dinner?" This timely cookbook, with dishes for omnivores and vegetarians alike, celebrates and promotes delicious, healthful homemade meals centered on the diverse array of seasonal fruits and vegetables grown in the South, and in most of the rest of the nation as well. Increased attention to the health benefits and environmental advantages of eating locally, Castle notes, is inspiring Americans to partake of the garden by raising their own kitchen plots, visiting area farmers' markets and pick-your-own farms, and signing up for CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) boxes from local growers. The New Southern Garden Cookbook offers over 300 brightly flavored recipes that will inspire beginning and experienced cooks, southern or otherwise, to take advantage of seasonal delights. Castle has organized the cookbook alphabetically by type of vegetable or fruit, building on the premise that when cooking with fresh produce, the ingredient, not the recipe, is the wiser starting point. While some dishes are inspired by traditional southern recipes, many reveal the goodness of gardens in new, contemporary ways. Peppered with tips, hints, and great stories, these pages make for good food and a good read.
