Book Ballycurragh to Tasmania 1649 1868 Grey Family and Innes Clan Volume Two

Download or read book Ballycurragh to Tasmania 1649 1868 Grey Family and Innes Clan Volume Two written by Ian Broinowski and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a narrative about three Gray families and their new lives in their chosen home of Van Diemen's Land in the late 1830s and the reasons which propelled each one into such a momentous change. However, their family journey originated centuries before in Ireland during the tumultuous English Civil War when their ancestor Lt Colonel John Grey stepped ashore at Ringsend, Dublin as part of Cromwell's Army on the 15th August 1649. Their story embraces just about all of our human emotions, through the quest for a better life, not only for themselves but for their children and future generations. In essence, like most emigrants, this was their primary motivation although compelling events such as war, economic and social challenges beyond the individual were also at play. The Greys were no different from thousands of other families who chose to travel to Australia and by exploring their lives, experiences and destinies we can learn just a little more about life in early colonial Tasmania.

Book Britannia s Navy on the West Coast of North America 1812 1914

Download or read book Britannia s Navy on the West Coast of North America 1812 1914 written by Barry Gough and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2016 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[Gough's] research...has been thorough, his presentation is scholarly, and his case fully sustained."--The Times Literary Supplement The influence of the Royal Navy on the development of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest was both effective and extensive. Yet all too frequently, its impact has been ignored by historians, who instead focus on the influence of explorers, fur traders, settlers, and railway builders. In this thoroughly revised and expanded edition of his classic 1972 work, naval historian Barry Gough examines the contest for the Columbia country during the War of 1812, the 1844 British response to President Polk's manifest destiny and cries of "Fifty-four forty or fight," the gold-rush invasion of 30, 000 outsiders, and the jurisdictional dispute in the San Juan Islands that spawned the Pig War. The author looks at the Esquimalt-based fleet in the decade before British Columbia joined Canada and the Navy's relationship with coastal First Nation over the five decades that preceded the Great War.

Excerpt: ... we must consider the outdoor arrangements a model of the consummate generalship of our worthy hostess to clip the "Flyer's" wings. On Thursday morning the match began between the Squadron and the Melbourne Club, of which we give the extract of the Melbourne paper. "THE SQUADRON V. THE M.C.C. "This match, between the officers of the squadron "and a team of our best amateur cricketers, proved a "very brilliant affair. There was a large gathering of "the public on the ground, at one time not less than "3,000, and the marquee on the enclosure was well "filled with ladies, whose presence and beauty gave "additional picturesqueness to the handsome ground "the whole day. His Excellency the Governor, with "Lady Manners Sutton and family, arrived about three "o'clock in the afternoon, and stayed several hours "on the ground. Admiral Hornby, with Captain "Hopkins, of the 'Liverpool, ' and Captain Gibson, "of the 'Liffey, ' were present during nearly the "whole of the match, in which they, as well as all "the naval officers on the ground, appeared to take "considerable interest. The excellent band of the " Liffey' discoursed sweet and gentle music, which "was extremely pleasant to the ear, and a remark "able contrast to the brass bands often stationed "on the ground, whose clamour so near to the "pavilion is occasionally so loud as to compel spec"tators to wish them a little further away. The "M.C.C. captain (Mr. Handfield) waived the right "to play professionals--an act of grace on their part, "but certainly not more than the strongest club in "the Southern Hemisphere ought to have done to a "team of sailors, who could not, under the circum"stances, be otherwise than out of practice. Lieute"nant Wright, captain of the officers, sent in...
