Download or read book Vijayanagara Voices written by William J. Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vijayanagara Empire flourished in South India between 1336 and 1565. Conveying the depth and creativity of Hindu religious and literary expression during that time, Vijayanagara Voices explores some of the contributions made by poets, singer-saints, and philosophers. Through translations and discussions of their lives and times, Jackson presents the voices of these cultural figures and reflects on the concerns of their era, looking especially into the vivid images in their works and their legends. He examines how these images convey both spiritual insights and physical experiences with memorable candour. The studies also raise intriguing questions about the empire's origins and its response to Muslim invaders, its 'Hinduness', and reasons for its ultimate decline. Vijayanagara Voices is a book about patterns in history, literature and life in South India. By examining the culture's archetypal displays, by understanding the culture in its own terms, and by comparing associated images and ideas from other cultures, this book offers unique insights into a rich and influential period in Indian history.

Download or read book The Vibrant Stillness written by Padma Neppalli and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deeply contemplative and inspiring, this book is a compilation of two highly revered texts in Advaita (Non-Duality). The first is a commentary on the selected names of the Divine Mother from the Lalita Sahasran?ma and the second is a commentary on Adi Shankara’s Dak?i??m?rti Stotram. Lalita Sahasran?ma is a treasure house of the knowledge of Sri Vidya. Seekers of all kinds, yogis, tantrics, and non-dualists alike, are drawn to it. Each name of the Goddess is packed with profound meaning - the gross, the subtle, and the subtlest. In his commentary, Sri Srinivasa Rao focuses on 108 of the 1000 names of the Goddess, and expounds on the most hidden and subtlest of the meanings of each name. Dak?i??m?rti Stotram is a crown jewel among Shankara’s hymns with the entire Advaita doctrine packed into ten profound verses. This book is a blend of Shaiva Advaita (aka Kashmir Shaivism) and Shankara Advaita. Sri Srinivasa Rao’s penetrating vision did not see any differences in the essential message of these apparently different genres of texts. According to him, “Advaita Vedanta is not different from the Sri Vidya of the Shaiva Advaita because both culminate in the union of the finite self with the Infinite.” “The texts discussed in this book are among the serious passages in Vedanta. Sri Yellamraju has excelled in capturing the essence of the highest concepts of Vedanta in as simple terms as possible. The outcome of the study of Vedanta, as Sri Yellamraju writes in his epilogue to the Stotram, is to attain sarv?tmabhava, the experience of the self in all beings, a very egalitarian idea which is unique to Upanishadic thought.” – Dr. K. Aravinda Rao

Download or read book Tibetan Buddhism and Modern Physics written by Vic Mansfield and published by Templeton Foundation Press. This book was released on 2009-07-27 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tibetan Buddhism and Modern Physics: Toward a Union of Love and Knowledge addresses the complex issues of dialogue and collaboration between Buddhism and science, revealing connections and differences between the two. While assuming no technical background in Buddhism or physics, this book strongly responds to the Dalai Lama’s “heartfelt plea” for genuine collaboration between science and Buddhism. The Dalai Lama has written a foreword to the book and the Office of His Holiness will translate it into both Chinese and Tibetan. In a clear and engaging way, this book shows how the principle of emptiness, the philosophic heart of Tibetan Buddhism, connects intimately to quantum nonlocality and other foundational features of quantum mechanics. Detailed connections between emptiness, modern relativity, and the nature of time are also explored. For Tibetan Buddhists, the profound interconnectedness implied by emptiness demands the practice of universal compassion. Because of the powerful connections between emptiness and modern physics, the book argues that the interconnected worldview of modern physics also encourages universal compassion. Along with these harmonies, the book explores a significant conflict between quantum mechanics and Tibetan Buddhism concerning the role of causality. The book concludes with a response to the question: "How does this expedition through the heart of modern physics and Tibetan Buddhism—from quantum mechanics, relativity, and cosmology, to emptiness, compassion, and disintegratedness—apply to today's painfully polarized world?" Despite differences and questions raised, the book's central message is that there is a solid basis for uniting these worldviews. From this basis, the message of universal compassion can accompany the spread of the scientific worldview, stimulating compassionate action in the light of deep understanding—a true union of love and knowledge. Tibetan Buddhism and Modern Physics will appeal to a broad audience that includes general readers and undergraduate and graduate students in science and religion courses.

Download or read book The Vivekacudamani of Sankaracarya Bhagavatpada written by John Grimes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advaita Vedanta is one of the most important and widely studied schools of thought in Hindu religion and the Vivekacudamani is one of the most important texts in the Advaita tradition and the most popular philosophical work ascribed to the great Indian philosopher, Sankara. Sankara (c.650-700) is considered to be a giant among giants and probably the most venerated philosopher in India's long history. The Vivekacudamani is in the form of a dialogue between a preceptor (guru) and a pupil (sisya) expounding the quintessence of Advaita in which the pupil humbly approaches the preceptor and, having served the teacher selflessly, implores to be rescued from worldly existence (samsara). The guru promises to teach the way to liberation (moksa) which culminates in the ecstatic experience of one's own Self. This book presents an accessible translation of the entire text and also includes Upanisadic cross-referencing to most of its 580 verses, extensive notes, a lengthy Introduction, list of variant readings, an extensive bibliography, and an index to the verses. All those interested in Indian religion and philosophy, Hindu studies, or Sanskrit, will find this readable English translation of an Indian philosophical classic invaluable.
