Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following excursion into a strange and not-so-pleasant world is fictional. What is not fictional is that a continuing population growth rate of 2 percent per year will rapidly lead to very large numbers of people. When sustained for four hundred years, a growth rate of 2 percent per year will increase the population by a factor of about 2,750. Thus, starting with a world population of about 3 billion not very many years ago, the number of people in the world will grow to 8,250 billion about four hundred years later. At the same time, the population in the United States will increase to 550 billion if it started from 200 million and also increased at the rate of 2 percent per year. Allowing for some minor calamities, such as a small nuclear war, we may not reach the preliminary goal for the world population of 8,250 billions of people until the year 2388. This small extrapolation has been made in our story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is with great pleasure that we present the proceedings of the 6th Inter- tional, Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC 2010), which was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. ISVC provides a common umbrella for the four main areas of visual computing including vision, graphics, visualization, and virtual reality. The goal is to provide a forum for researchers, scientists, engineers, and pr- titioners throughout the world to present their latest research ?ndings, ideas, developments, and applications in the broader area of visual computing. This year, the program consisted of 14 oral sessions, one poster session, 7 special tracks, and 6 keynote presentations. The response to the call for papers was very good; we received over 300 submissions for the main symposium from which we accepted 93 papers for oral presentation and 73 papers for poster p- sentation. Special track papers were solicited separately through the Organizing and Program Committees of each track. A total of 44 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 6 papers for poster presentation in the special tracks.

Book Contemporary Musical Film

Download or read book Contemporary Musical Film written by Kevin J. Donnelly and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the turn of the millennium, films such as Chicago (2002) and Phantom of the Opera (2004) have reinvigorated the popularity of the screen musical. This edited collection, bringing together a number of international scholars, looks closely at the range and scope of contemporary film musicals, from stage adaptations like Mamma Mia! (2008) and Les Miserables (2012), to less conventional works that elide the genre, like Team America: World Police (2004) and Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill (2003/04). Looking at the varying aesthetic function of soundtrack and lyric in films like Disney's wildly popular Frozen (2013) and the Fast and the Furious franchise, or the self-reflexive commentary of the 'post-millennial rock musical', this wide-ranging collection breaks new ground in its study of this multifaceted genre.

Book Helen of Troy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ruby Blondell
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2013-04-04
  • ISBN : 0199911932
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Helen of Troy written by Ruby Blondell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Greek culture is pervaded by a profound ambivalence regarding female beauty. It is an awe-inspiring, supremely desirable gift from the gods, essential to the perpetuation of a man's name through reproduction; yet it also grants women terrifying power over men, posing a threat inseparable from its allure. The myth of Helen is the central site in which the ancient Greeks expressed and reworked their culture's anxieties about erotic desire. Despite the passage of three millennia, contemporary culture remains almost obsessively preoccupied with all the power and danger of female beauty and sexuality that Helen still represents. Yet Helen, the embodiment of these concerns for our purported cultural ancestors, has been little studied from this perspective. Such issues are also central to contemporary feminist thought. Helen of Troy engages with the ancient origins of the persistent anxiety about female beauty, focusing on this key figure from ancient Greek culture in a way that both extends our understanding of that culture and provides a useful perspective for reconsidering aspects of our own. Moving from Homer and Hesiod to Sappho, Aeschylus, and Euripides, Ruby Blondell offers a fresh examination of the paradoxes and ambiguities that Helen embodies. In addition to literary sources, Blondell considers the archaeological record, which contains evidence of Helen's role as a cult figure, worshipped by maidens and newlyweds. The result is a compelling new interpretation of this alluring figure.
