Book Louisiana s Way Home

Download or read book Louisiana s Way Home written by Kate DiCamillo and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From two-time Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo comes a story of discovering who you are — and deciding who you want to be. When Louisiana Elefante’s granny wakes her up in the middle of the night to tell her that the day of reckoning has arrived and they have to leave home immediately, Louisiana isn’t overly worried. After all, Granny has many middle-of-the-night ideas. But this time, things are different. This time, Granny intends for them never to return. Separated from her best friends, Raymie and Beverly, Louisiana struggles to oppose the winds of fate (and Granny) and find a way home. But as Louisiana’s life becomes entwined with the lives of the people of a small Georgia town — including a surly motel owner, a walrus-like minister, and a mysterious boy with a crow on his shoulder — she starts to worry that she is destined only for good-byes. (Which could be due to the curse on Louisiana's and Granny’s heads. But that is a story for another time.) Called “one of DiCamillo’s most singular and arresting creations” by The New York Times Book Review, the heartbreakingly irresistible Louisiana Elefante was introduced to readers in Raymie Nightingale — and now, with humor and tenderness, Kate DiCamillo returns to tell her story.

JOHN LEWIS-STEMPEL 'This lovely book is almost as thrilling as the bird's immortal song - balm for a troubled soul and a glimpse of paradise.' JOANNA LUMLEY ______________________________ Come to the forest, sit by the fireside and listen to intoxicating song, as Sam Lee tells the story of the nightingale. Every year, as darkness falls upon woodlands, the nightingale heralds the arrival of Spring. Book Segregation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carl H. Nightingale
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-07-11
  • ISBN : 022637971X
  • Pages : 539 pages

Download or read book Segregation written by Carl H. Nightingale and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of segregation, what often comes to mind is apartheid South Africa, or the American South in the age of Jim Crow—two societies fundamentally premised on the concept of the separation of the races. But as Carl H. Nightingale shows us in this magisterial history, segregation is everywhere, deforming cities and societies worldwide. Starting with segregation’s ancient roots, and what the archaeological evidence reveals about humanity’s long-standing use of urban divisions to reinforce political and economic inequality, Nightingale then moves to the world of European colonialism. It was there, he shows, segregation based on color—and eventually on race—took hold; the British East India Company, for example, split Calcutta into “White Town” and “Black Town.” As we follow Nightingale’s story around the globe, we see that division replicated from Hong Kong to Nairobi, Baltimore to San Francisco, and more. The turn of the twentieth century saw the most aggressive segregation movements yet, as white communities almost everywhere set to rearranging whole cities along racial lines. Nightingale focuses closely on two striking examples: Johannesburg, with its state-sponsored separation, and Chicago, in which the goal of segregation was advanced by the more subtle methods of real estate markets and housing policy. For the first time ever, the majority of humans live in cities, and nearly all those cities bear the scars of segregation. This unprecedented, ambitious history lays bare our troubled past, and sets us on the path to imagining the better, more equal cities of the future.

Book Moral Values Attitudes and Moods

Download or read book Moral Values Attitudes and Moods written by BK Jagdish Chander and published by Brahma Kumaris. This book was released on 2021-04-23 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OUR universe consists of two different aspects: the physical or material and the spiritual or metaphysical. Had man been only physical or material entity, he would not have felt concerned with the moral or spiritual values. In that case, he would have behaved like a machine. We find that almost all types of man's actions – whether they are political, social, economic, filial, conjugal, ritualistic – are adjudged by the society from the moral point of view also. The Watergate Scandal, which led to the exit of President Nixon from the White House and to the launching of prosecution against his top aides, is an historical illustration, the memory of which is still fresh in the minds of the people all over the world. It clearly shows that even if a person has reached the apex of political and executive machinery by means of an unprecedented popular vote and is strongly set in the highest echelons of power and is granted by conventions or the political constitution of his country, certain privileges, prerogatives and immunities, the society looks at his actions from the moral point of view also.
