Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel-requiem based on real stories, heroes and monsters. This is the first fictional verbal portrayal of the galactic-scale events in Maidan, in the heart of Kyiv, Ukraine that have left their mark on world history. From this apocalyptic perspective, angels and demons in human flesh operate on the 21st century stage of Maidan, a sacral place of the Earth. The protagonist of the novel, Yarko, feels that he can no longer stay at home, as he watches the capital of his country being absorbed by the revolution on TV. He takes a leave of absence at the institute where he works as a researcher, and leaves his family, rushing at dawn to catch a train to Kyiv. Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the country, in Donetsk, a gang, which includes the current president of Ukraine, gathers for a meeting. In Maidan, Yarko serves as one of the architects of a set of barricades because the chances of the Republic of Liberty being attacked grow daily. Despite a severe frost, he lives in a tent, like tens of thousands of rebels. Before the climax of this conflict, a Heavenly Hundred of peaceful, unarmed protesters will have given their lives for the Revolution and thousands of others would suffer in their defense of freedom and the independence of Ukraine. The citizens of the Free World will feel as if they are at the brink of a bloody Armageddon when they hold this requiem book in their hands.

Book Dust Explosions

Download or read book Dust Explosions written by Jean Cross and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest of the media in dust explosions increased considerably following two major grain-elevator disasters in the United States in 1979. However, these were not isolated incidents and were statistically unusual only in the high loss of life involved. Any oxidizable material that is dispersed in fine powder form may be explosive, and ignition sources with sufficient energy to ignite a dust cloud are easily produced in normal industrial processing. Dust fires and minor incidents are not uncommon in many industries, but fortunately the combination of events and circumstances that must coincide for a large-scale explosion arise only rarely. Nevertheless, this is often more by luck than by good management and many potentially hazardous situations are common in industry. An explosive dust cloud and the circumstances in which it can ignite are not as simple to define as the equivalent situation in gases or flammable vapors. A large number of definitions and experimental tests have been devised to characterize the explosibility of dusts and ignition sources. The aim of this book is to provide a guide describing conditions in industry that could lead to dust explosions and the means to avoid them. Ignition sources and the way in which they can arise in powder processing are discussed and illustrated by case histories of reported incidents. The methods by which the potential hazards of a process or product can be evaluated are described, with special attention paid to the interpretation of the results of the different experimental methods.

Book Three Moments of an Explosion

Download or read book Three Moments of an Explosion written by China Miéville and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post • NPR • The Guardian • Kirkus Reviews • The fiction of multiple award–winning author China Miéville is powered by intelligence and imagination. Like George Saunders, Karen Russell, and David Mitchell, he pulls from a variety of genres with equal facility, employing the fantastic not to escape from reality but instead to interrogate it in provocative, unexpected ways. London awakes one morning to find itself besieged by a sky full of floating icebergs. Destroyed oil rigs, mysteriously reborn, clamber from the sea and onto the land, driven by an obscure purpose. An anatomy student cuts open a cadaver to discover impossibly intricate designs carved into a corpse’s bones—designs clearly present from birth, bearing mute testimony to . . . what? Of such concepts and unforgettable images are made the twenty-eight stories in this collection—many published here for the first time. By turns speculative, satirical, and heart-wrenching, fresh in form and language, and featuring a cast of damaged yet hopeful seekers who come face-to-face with the deep weirdness of the world—and at times the deeper weirdness of themselves—Three Moments of an Explosion is a fitting showcase for one of literature’s most original voices. Praise for Three Moments of an Explosion “China Miéville is dazzling. His latest collection of short stories, Three Moments of an Explosion, crowds virtuosity into every sentence.”—The New York Times “You can’t talk about [China] Miéville without using the word ‘brilliant.’ . . . His wit dazzles, his humour is lively, and the pure vitality of his imagination is astonishing.”—Ursula K. Le Guin, The Guardian “[A] gripping collection . . . Miéville expertly mixes science fiction, fantasy and surrealism. . . . Amid the longer stories are more cerebral, poetic flash pieces that will haunt the reader beyond the pages of this exceptional book.”—The Washington Post “The stories shine . . . with a winking brilliance.”—The Seattle Times “Mind-bending excursions into the fantastic.”—NPR “Bradbury meets Borges, with Lovecraft gibbering tumultuously just out of hearing.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Three Moments of an Explosion is a book filled with fabulous oddities.”—Entertainment Weekly “Miéville moves effortlessly among realism, fantasy, and surrealism. . . . His characters, whether ordinary witnesses to extraordinary events or lunatics operating out of inexplicable compulsions, are invariably well drawn and compelling.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

In a super society where everyone has a power called a Sphere of Influence. Noah might have gotten more than he bargained for. About the Author When one lives in a place as dull and drab as Nebraska, they must learn to entertain themselves. Not wanting to spend his days breaking the law and drinking away his sorrows, Kyle Payne instead decided to fill his day with books, film, and video games. Fantasy was a much needed outlet for when one lives in the middle of nowhere. Growing up on Harry Potter, and the Lord of the Rings left him with a lifelong love of literature. He went to college at the University of Nebraska at Kearney with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Understanding the human mind helped him to develop his characters. He cares for people who have mental disabilities. Now happily living in the city, he enjoys going to the gym, walking in the park, and watching plays. He has a fondness for cats and dogs and hopes to continue to work as a writer. Single, he lives alone in his apartment in downtown Omaha. He occasionally likes to hang out with friends and watch movies at home. One day he hopes to be as big a writer as Stephen King or George R. R. Martin though in the short term he hopes to make enough money to become a write full time.

Book excerpt: In these pages you will find the story of my life, an average shmuck who's looking for that special formula to make life meaningful. In a very haphazard way, I explored the different avenues to fulfillment, or perhaps more exactly, I willingly responded to the blow of the wind. It cost me several years of my life, my only chance at education, my relationship with my parents and my formerly acute senses, but it is my belief that God himself had a plan for my life, and I was just thick-sculled enough to need those times to learn how wrong my choices could be. In the end, He directed me to Himself, and I've never been the same since...

Book The Chocolate Prophecy

Download or read book The Chocolate Prophecy written by E.L. Ward and published by Luke Ward. This book was released on 2020-08-30 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A great evil will be coming back into the world... and in two weeks' time, it will rain chocolate." Enter the life of Jek - a humble lighthouse steward on the southern coast of Jast-Madiir. Along with his wife (whose name is Aaliyah… or was it Audrey?), Jek must daily meet the expectations of an iron-fisted dictatorship, a global dragon-Inquisition, and a clerical order of flying jellyfish-like creatures churning out new surveys at a dizzying pace. All-in-all, a fairly predictable tedium. But when any little demerit on his next inspection could cost him his life, it can be hard sometimes to keep from stressing out! Of course, if Jek knew half the things at play just beyond his sleepy shores, he would be very stressed indeed. Neighboring Tophthaera is reeling under the Twin Queens’ civil war. To the north, insurrection threatens to claim the island of Maenea for the cause of “Free-Dome” – a very strange and unsettling new ideology. Even the stable nations must decide how to deal with the recent, accidental discovery of magic. And all the while, the threat of Onyxadon’s inevitable return clouds every counsel. Only the strength and wisdom of the Grand Inquisitor would seem adequate to avail against these many calamities. But he has been dormant for seventy-five years now. Jek is, at best, dimly aware of such things… and perhaps better suited than anyone to be an ineffectual bystander anyway. But those luxuries are burst quite suddenly when he meets a crotchety old sailor man, only to be swept into a hair-brained Noble Quest to find the Knights of the Indigo Lodge, expose a secret Doom Fleet, and unravel the dreaded mystery of Proconsul Zedulon’s infamous “Chocolate Prophecy.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fifth Death by Chocolate Mystery by USA Today bestselling author Sarah Graves, Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree and Ellie White, owners of the Chocolate Moose Bakery, are hired to cater a retired film star's party in what's rumored to be Eastport, Maine's most haunted house... Jake and Ellie are taking a break from perfecting their chocolate pizza recipe to cater a housewarming party hosted by movie icon Ingrid Merryfield. Miss Merryfield is famous for her old-Hollywood glamour. Her new home, Cliff House, has a reputation too--for being haunted. Some of her guests even try to summon a spirit during the party, using a Ouija board. What arrives instead is a freak autumn storm that downs an ancient tree, trapping everyone on the property and setting the stage for a killer's planned spree . . . Though Jake and Ellie don't intend to get stirred into the mix, there's no avoiding it--especially when they witness a guest being shoved over the very precipice that gave Cliff House its forbidding name. As they sift through suspects and motives, their search takes them from a long-lost family graveyard to an herbalist's deceptively sweet cottage and finally to Cliff House's overgrown gardens. Is there some ghostly presence involved--or a flesh-and-blood villain? Either way, can they avoid meeting their very own, very permanent Hollywood ending?
