Book excerpt: In the pages of The Cross of Lorraine, France's darkest hours of occupation come to life in this historic novel of love and hate, loyalty and betrayal, suffering and survival. Here we meet the villains, the martyrs and the heroes of the French Resistance- itself a frail child born from the ashes of bitter defeat. The German villains are men like Klaus Barbie- the Butcher of Lyon- and his one-eyed adjutant- Heinrich Biebischeimer. The martyrs include Jean Moulin, who survived his own throat slashing only to die at the Butcher's hand; Boris Vilde, whose courage inspired a natio; and Lisette Arnout, who despite imprisonment and rape still fought to defend the honor of her loved-one's memory. The list of heroes is even longer. But none of them, not the boy from the Village of Rainbows, nor the rail worker from St. Lazare, nor the spoiled child from the Avenue Foch; not even the wine merchant, nor the talented athlete from the shores of Lake Michigan- none of them ever thought that survival made them heroes. For them, Resistance was the only choice. And in time, each of them helped give a nation back its freedom.

Book excerpt: We often hear people say that the Church is full of hypocrites, but that is impossible even though there are hypocrites that go to church. I have grown to understand that the Church is full of love because God is love, and there is nothing hypocritical about God. The Church does consists of people, hypocrites included, but God=s love is greater and his love fills the Church. So What=s wrong with the church.... Does Jesus need to die again? Unfortunately I have experienced a lot of bad in the Church that caused me to have a negative perception early on. I was shallow minded and only thought good things happen in the Church. So when I was exposed to the bad it put a damper on what Church should of been to me. I thank God for covering me when I was not being obedient. I also thank God for renewing my mind and getting me to the point where I am able to help others now. This book is a reflection of the good and bad that happens in the church. We need to realize that people need to hear the bad about the church too. It gives closure and healing to those who are in need. Being hurt in the Church can be a painful experience. This book deals with real issues and everything written actually happen. God allowed me to experience the trials and tribulations so that I could be healed from my past. I experienced God=s Truth in writing this book and I am happy that he chose me. So Does Jesus need to die again? No, but we must die daily in order to be pleasing to God.

Book The Cross of Redemption

Download or read book The Cross of Redemption written by James Baldwin and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the most brilliant and provocative literary figures of the past century—a collection of essays, articles, reviews, and interviews that have never before been gathered in a single volume. “An absorbing portrait of Baldwin’s time—and of him.” —New York Review of Books James Baldwin was an American literary master, renowned for his fierce engagement with issues haunting our common history. In The Cross of Redemption we have Baldwin discoursing on, among other subjects, the possibility of an African-American president and what it might mean; the hypocrisy of American religious fundamentalism; the black church in America; the trials and tribulations of black nationalism; anti-Semitism; the blues and boxing; Russian literary masters; and the role of the writer in our society. Prophetic and bracing, The Cross of Redemption is a welcome and important addition to the works of a cosmopolitan and canonical American writer who still has much to teach us about race, democracy, and personal and national identity. As Michael Ondaatje has remarked, “If van Gogh was our nineteenth-century artist-saint, Baldwin [was] our twentieth-century one.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping young adult novel that sweeps from the pioneer past to the present. In the late 1820s, Lizzie Dawson, only sixteen, was forced to be the child bride of a notorious whaler in the remote Marlborough Sounds of New Zealand. There began a living hell — until she met Matthew, a young Maori preacher, and with love came defiance. Flash forward to today. Bel, also sixteen, is sent to a remote farm in the Sounds. Her parents are in the throes of divorce and Bel's turbulent thoughts attract an uneasy force. '"At last," says a voice in my head. "You're here." And I know without a doubt that Lizzie has come for me, and me alone.' Lizzie has an urgent story to tell. Past events drive her to reach across time, across worlds. In this extraordinary first novel, Lorraine Orman evokes the nineteenth-century whalers' lives as vividly as the contemporary story. Cross Tides sweeps you into its double world with eerie, irresistible power.
