Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crock of Gold The Grey Woman and the Thin Woman were so incensed at being answered that they married the two Philosophers in order to be able to pinch them in bed, but the skins of the Philosophers were so thick that they did not know they were being pinched. They repaid' the fury of the women with such tender affection that these vicious creatures almost expired of chagrin, and once, in a very ecstasy of exasperation, after having been kissed by their husbands, they uttered the fourteen hundred maledic tions which comprised their wisdom, and these were learned by the Philosophers who thus became even wiser than before. In due process of time two children were born of these marriages. They were born on the same day and in the same hour, and' they were only different in this, that one of them was a boy and the other one was a girl. Nobody was able to tell how this had happened and, for the first time in their lives, the Philosophers were forced to ad mire an event which they had been unable to prognosticate; but having proved by many different methods that the children were really children, that what must be must be, that a fact cannot be controverted. How Angus Og reacts to Pan's arrival, and what happens to the Daughter of Murrachu who becomes caught in the turmoil, are the questions that drive this humorous and charming tale. Complete with magic, fairies and leprechauns, this timeless book would make for a great addition to the family collection, and it is not to be missed by fans of Stephen's work. Book excerpt: THIS CLASSIC WORK IS REFORMATTED AND CAREFULLY REPRODUCED. Because of the enlarged size, each letter takes about four times (4x) the surface a font character takes in a normal print book. It was not reproduced in a hurry from an old photocopy. Some reviews that may appear on Amazon reflect other editions of this book. To avoid buying a poor quality classic, always inspect its sample pages once they are available on Amazon.com. In case they do not appear initially, wait for a up to three days and they will. If they are still unavailable, consider buying a different book that offers a preview.Another sign to look for is "full justification" of lines: all the lines in a paragraph must have the same length, except for the last one, like the text columns in a newspaper. If they have a "rugged" look, the printing is bellow par. However, some people prefer the rugged look. Just make sure you know what you are buying. Finally, words at the end of sentences are rarely hyphened in this version. It is nearly hyphenation free.Get this book and you get God Pan, a leprechaun, his gold, more Celtic Gods, fairies, the police and a philosopher that starts a crisis. It does not make sense but it works. James Stephens's out of this world classic story remains ageless and excites readers to this day.The book is printed with an extra large font and special spacing to make it easy to read. With humor and intelligence, Irish author James Stephens (1882-1950) retold folk stories and created new myths on old traditions. He is considered a member of the "Celtic Revival" movement. Stephens stood at four feet and ten inches height but he was very athletic and to this day, his spirit soars with the legends he bequeathed us.

Book excerpt: The Crock of Gold is about the hardworking and honest Roger Acton and how he slowly tires of his simple country life. Excerpt: "A very miserable man was Roger Acton now, for this last trial was the worst of all. The vapors of his discontent had almost passed away—that bright pernicious dream was being rapidly forgotten—the morning's ill-got coin, "thank the Lord, it was lost as soon as found," and penitence had washed away that blot upon his soul; but here, an honest pound, liberally bestowed by his hereditary landlord—his bright bit of gold..."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crock of Gold (1912), one of three original novels by James Stephens, is a work only a master of fiction and folklore could imagine. Taking up the major philosophical and psychological concerns of the early-twentieth century—over a decade before works by T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf, among others, would cement literary Modernism’s place in history—Stephens’ novel is a groundbreaking and important work. The text centers on the Philosopher and his wife, the Thin Woman, who undergo a series of journeys and harrowing trials. Faced with danger both human and divine, the two characters are forced to weather the winds of change in order to change themselves. Divided into six books, The Crock of Gold—no doubt inspired by the Irish oral tradition of storytelling—follows the Philosopher’s quest to save the most beautiful woman in the world; his encounter with the gods who have captured her; his return home and arrest for murder (he has been framed by leprechauns incensed at the loss of their crock of gold); and finally, the Thin Woman’s quest to find the fabled Three Infinites. James Stephens’ The Crock of Gold is perhaps unparalleled in its ability to weave together ancient narrative techniques, mythological sources, and such dominant themes of its day as gender equality and humanity’s quest for self-understanding beyond the traditional boundaries of faith and religion. It is also a darkly comic novel, full of ironic political commentary and suspiciously human conversations situated within the animal world. Most popular of Stephens’ works, The Crock of Gold conceals in its humorous, irreverent outlook a deeply serious, ultimately reverent love for the human soul—unsurprising for an author whose life was marked with difficulty from the very beginning. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this new edition of James Stephens’ The Crock of Gold is a classic of Irish literature reimagined for modern readers.
