Book The Critical Poem

Download or read book The Critical Poem written by Thorpe Running and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book, scholar Thorpe Running shows that a skeptical approach to both language and poetry places eight poets from three countries in Latin America within a strain of poetry prefigured by Stephane Mallarme." "Octavio Paz, Jorge Luis Borges, Roberto Juarroz, Alejandra Pizarnik, Alberto Girri, Juan Luis Martinez, Gonzalo Millan, and David Huerta span three different generations. In addition to their age and geographical differences, their poetry bears no obvious similarities. All eight, however, are poetas pensantes, or thinking poets, and underlying the work of these probing writers is the disturbing question: Does language do what it is supposed to do? The answer is negative for all these poets who see their poems as being made up of words that don't work."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Poet s Craft

Download or read book The Poet s Craft written by A. F. Scott and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published in 1957 and was intended as an appreciation of poetry, based on the study of authors' corrected manuscripts, revised published versions, transpositions of prose into verse, and contrasted translations. A. F. Scott divides his study into five sections: the first section has photographs of manuscript poems by twenty-four poets. The second section presents for comparison the first published version of eight well-known poems, with the revisions published later. A brief history of the changes is given, so that the making of some of the poems can be followed over the years. The third section gives six poems, with the source used by the poet for his poem. The fourth section gives 34 poetical versions of twelve originals. The fifth and final section contains 120 poems, paired for contrast and comparison, unsigned, and with a specific critical subject suggested for each pair.

Book Attack of the Difficult Poems

Download or read book Attack of the Difficult Poems written by Charles Bernstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Bernstein is our postmodern jester of American poesy, equal part surveyor of democratic vistas and scholar of avant-garde sensibilities. In a career spanning thirty-five years and forty books, he has challenged and provoked us with writing that is decidedly unafraid of the tensions between ordinary and poetic language, and between everyday life and its adversaries. Attack of the Difficult Poems, his latest collection of essays, gathers some of his most memorably irreverent work while addressing seriously and comprehensively the state of contemporary humanities, the teaching of unconventional forms, fresh approaches to translation, the history of language media, and the connections between poetry and visual art. Applying an array of essayistic styles, Attack of the Difficult Poems ardently engages with the promise of its title. Bernstein introduces his key theme of the difficulty of poems and defends, often in comedic ways, not just difficult poetry but poetry itself. Bernstein never loses his ingenious ability to argue or his consummate attention to detail. Along the way, he offers a wide-ranging critique of literature’s place in the academy, taking on the vexed role of innovation and approaching it from the perspective of both teacher and practitioner. From blues artists to Tin Pan Alley song lyricists to Second Wave modernist poets, The Attack of the Difficult Poems sounds both a battle cry and a lament for the task of the language maker and the fate of invention.

Book The Contemporary Narrative Poem

Download or read book The Contemporary Narrative Poem written by Steven P. Schneider and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past thirty years, narrative poems have made a comeback against the lyric approach to poetry that has dominated the past century. Drawing on a decade of conferences and critical seminars on the topic, The Contemporary Narrative Poem examines this resurgence of narrative and the cultural and literary forces motivating it. Gathering ten essays from poet-critics who write from a wide range of perspectives and address a wide range of works, the collection transcends narrow conceptions of narrative, antinarrative, and metanarrative. The authors ask several questions: What formal strategies do recent narrative poems take? What social, cultural, and epistemological issues are raised in such poems? How do contemporary narrative poems differ from modernist narrative poems? In what ways has history been incorporated into the recent narrative poetry? How have poets used the lyric within narrative poems? How do experimental poets redefine narrative itself through their work? And what role does consciousness play in the contemporary narrative poem? The answers they supply will engage every poet and student of poetry.
