Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Critic in the Orient Egypt appeal to the sense of the historical. 7apan stands alone, alien to all our ways of life and thought, but so intensely artistic, so saturated with the intellec tual spirit that it seems to belong to another world than this material, commercial existence that stamps all European and American life. The new China furnishes an attrattive field of study, but unfortunately when I visited the country it was in the throes of revolution and travel was dangerous anywhere outside the great treaty ports. Book The Critic in the Occident

Download or read book The Critic in the Occident written by George Hamlin Fitch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Critic in the Occident: Illustrated From Photographs My most vivid impression of Naples, after nine days' stay, was that of a city of stucco and stone. Most of the buildings are of yellow stucco that mellows with age; the streets and sidewalks are of a hard, dark stone that wears smooth with long use. In the densely populated streets huge buildings rise for six or seven stories and leaving nothing but a narrow slit of blue sky between them; massive stone walls brace up the sides of the hills, and many nar row stone steps lead up the steep hillside. Looking down upon the city from the suppressed Carthusian monastery of San Martino, these streets appear like deep clefts in solid lines of masonry. Book Shakespeare the Orient and the Critics

Download or read book Shakespeare the Orient and the Critics written by Abdulla Al-Dabbagh and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous criticism has not adequately discussed oriental aspects of the content of Shakespearean drama. In addition to his portrayal of oriental figures (such as Cleopatra, Othello, and Shylock) and his use of literary genres and motifs that have roots in oriental tradition (such as that of the tragic romance in Romeo and Juliet, there are certain key elements in Shakespeare's thought and outlook that can only be properly understood within the larger contribution of the oriental legacy. This legacy has clear relevance not only to the exemplary fate of the lovers in Romeo and Juliet, but also to the destinies of such major Shakespearean heroes as Hamlet and Lear. Shakespeare, the Orient, and the Critics investigates the boundaries of oriental framework within works such as Hamlet, King Lear, and The Tempest. Stylistically, at the heart of Shakespeare's orientalism are two long-recognized features of his dramatic art: his predilection for reversing stereotypes and his sympathy and identification with the alien and the «other.» This can be most clearly seen in the love tragedies of Othello and Anthony and Cleopatra as well as the romantic comedy of The Merchant of Venice. Ultimately, the philosophic underpinning of such works is a special expression of Renaissance humanism that transcends the boundaries of class, race, and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orient Express There are some things here set out, then, of which it has been a small sacrifice to write, even though many of them have been told before. Most of them were witnessed in the service of The Times in Persia and in Turkey, and a special acknowledgment must be made to my editor for his kind permission to make use of many articles contributed to its columns. For a similar courtesy I have to thank the editors of The Contemporary Review and The Edinburgh Review. The editors of The Daily Chronicle and The Manchester Guardian have also kindly allowed me to use some articles of an earlier date, written in Macedonia. Book Theory and Praxis

Download or read book Theory and Praxis written by M.S. Pandey and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present anthology is a collection of fifteen research papers which critically explore the multiple dimensions of contemporary literary theory. It provides a wide spectrum of theories and shows their application to different texts across the globe. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries were witness to three major movements, namely Marxism, Feminism and Postcolonialism, which have led to a serious reconsidering of the so-called metanarratives of literature, science, history, economics, philosophy and anthropology. These movements have brought together a wide variety of human discourses, and have made literary theory an interdisciplinary body of cultural theory which has now become an important model of inquiry into the intricacies and complexities of human existence. The anthology includes articles on poststructuralism, postcolonialism, postmodernism, postfeminism, orientalism, nationalist and hegemonic discourses, subalternity, gender identity, eco-criticism and global aesthetics by eminent scholars and critics.

Book Orientalism

  • Author : Edward W. Said
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2014-10-01
  • ISBN : 0804153868
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Orientalism written by Edward W. Said and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than three decades after its first publication, Edward Said's groundbreaking critique of the West's historical, cultural, and political perceptions of the East has become a modern classic. In this wide-ranging, intellectually vigorous study, Said traces the origins of "orientalism" to the centuries-long period during which Europe dominated the Middle and Near East and, from its position of power, defined "the orient" simply as "other than" the occident. This entrenched view continues to dominate western ideas and, because it does not allow the East to represent itself, prevents true understanding. Essential, and still eye-opening, Orientalism remains one of the most important books written about our divided world.

Book The Obvious Orient Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Obvious Orient Classic Reprint written by Albert Bushnell Hart and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Obvious Orient The world abounds in sketchy books upon the East, and the title chosen for this volume is the writer's admission that no one can learn all that there is in the most ancient and inscrutable of the continents in an eight months' experience. On the other hand, the Orient is so unlike the western world that it still has the stimulating effect of novelty and variety. It is astonishing how the books that one reads beforehand on the East fail to include the things which instantly come before the eyes the moment one lands in Asia; even the hasty traveller's record, therefore, adds something to the knowledge of the bewildering and picturesque detail of Oriental life. For this study of the East I have had some advantages in the way of previous investigation and reflection, and the friendship of former students and others now settled in the Orient. Americans in that part of the world never lose their nationality, and the travelling American finds himself welcomed to a partnership in their experiences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thousand Years Ago: A Romance of the Orient Considering the version as it stood to be in need of changes for their purposes, the owners of the American rights requested me to suggest and make the changes. To this I replied that to make altera tions or adaptations of the version did not appeal to me, but if the owners would like to give me entire freedom to write a new and original play on the theme of the Persian folk-tale used by Gozzi suit able to the scenic settings of Reinhardt's production, I should be glad to do so. This freedom was courteously given, and the present play was written in the late spring and early summer of this year, and placed in rehearsal in October. Book All Quiet on the Orient Express

Download or read book All Quiet on the Orient Express written by Magnus Mills and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnus Mills’s first novel, The Restraint of Beasts, was hailed by Thomas Pynchon as a “comic wonder.” His second novel, All Quiet on the Orient Express, is an equally edgy blend of high-grade comedy and low-grade paranoia. With insidiously beguiling deadpan charm, Mills draws us again into the world of contract employment, this time in England’s Lake District. The novel’s narrator, an itinerant odd-jobber, is camping out, waiting for summer to end so that he can set off for some vague notion of the East . . . Turkey, Persia, overland to India. In the meantime, he agrees to do a small painting job for the owner of his campsite. One job leads to another. Before long, our hero is hopelessly and hilariously enmeshed in the off-season mysteries of the placid northern English community, grappling with dark forces beyond his power—some of which hang out at the local pub. To think it all began with a simple paint job . . .

Book The Critic and the Drama Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Critic and the Drama Classic Reprint written by George Jean Nathan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Critic and the Drama The imprisoning Of it in a tangible dream. Criticism is the dream book. All art is a kind of subconscious madness expressed in terms of sanity; criticism is essential to the interpretation of its mysteries, for about everything truly beautiful there is ever some thing mysterious and disconcerting. Beauty is not always immediately recognizable as beauty; what Often passes for beauty is mere infatuation; living beauty is like a love that has outlasted the middle-years of life, and has met triumphantly the test Of time, and faith, and cynic meditation. For beauty is a sleep walker in the endless corridors Of the wakeful world, uncertain, groping, and not a little. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civilization: Tales of the Orient He came out to Shanghai a generation ago, in those days when Shanghai was not as respectable as it is now - whatever that says to you. It was, of course, a great change from Home, and its crude pleasures and crude companions gave him somewhat of a shock. For he was of decent stock, with a certain sense of the fitness of things, and the beach-combers, adventurers, rough traders and general riffraff of the China Coast, gathered in Shanghai, did not offer him the society he desired. He was often obliged to associate with them, however, more or less, in a business way, for his humble position as minor clerk in a big corporation entailed certain responsibilities out of hours, and this responsibility he could not shirk, for fear of losing his position.
