Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: keine, , language: English, abstract: Nowadays, company crises are the everyday life. The developments show that not only small but also medium-sized companies and even corporate groups are effected: breaches of company rules at Siemens and Volkswagen, SARS at Lufthansa or products recall at Haribo. These situations are not only big challenges for the management but also for the creditors and employees. Therefore the highest priority is to restore the competitiveness of the company. Usually, company crisis does not appear suddenly but there are already important warning signals in the forefront of the crises. If these warning signals are ignored and different determinants like the following of a conservative, centralistic and autocratic leadership, intransparency of production costs or a missing controlling system are cumulated, there is a danger for a crisis. An essential cause for company crisis is a bad qualification of the management in combination with missing problem solving competence within the deciding process of the management level. Therefore, the management needs to be qualified by leadership skills in order to react in the right way on warning signals for crises. This working paper shows what competences managers in companies affected by crises need. First it is important to present the basics of a company crisis. The working paper describes the types, causes and consequences of company crises, and the typical process of crises. Later, different competence approaches are presented being important for each modern manager as a company crisis can affect each company any time.

Book excerpt: Trends in standardized test scores reveal an alarming truth: our educational system is failing our students, and America is falling behind other nations in producing competent students for a global economy. Author Dr Clarence Nixon Jr. is a professional educator and consultant to Fortune 500 companies. After seeing the trend and developing a highly successful educational non-profit to reverse it, he wrote both to challenge and inspire in business and civic arenas, together with educators and parents, to reverse the decline in student competence. The author's proven track record with t.Lab can light the way for everyone engaged with the education of American youth. As measured by standardized tests, our students' core competencies have been trending down for decades. Simultaneously, other nations' students are outperforming those of America. Unless this changes, America will suffer greatly. The several influences producing this threatening juxtaposition must be identified. The needed paradigm shift must be laid bare for parents, educators, and administrators to implement. The threatening influences must be disarmed and made to support student excellence.

Such a broad scope of practice necessitates a theoretical foundation that is anchored in the concept of human competence. This text explores the concept of competence, and shows how it is expressed in a variety of theoretical frameworks, including traditional models and emerging theoretical approaches. This approach toward human behavior focuses on mutually beneficial interactions between people and society, and emphasizes the connections between individuals and various systems that influence their lives. Book Behavioural Markers for Assessment of Competence in Crisis Management

Download or read book Behavioural Markers for Assessment of Competence in Crisis Management written by David Gatfield and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lack of competence in crisis management has been shown to be a causal factor in a number of recent maritime accidents. In safety critical industries other than commercial shipping, such as civil aviation, nuclear and offshore, research is being undertaken to identify behavioural markers that can be used to assess competence in crisis management. Although there is now general acceptance of the core concepts for the non-technical or resource management skills required for competence in crisis management, there is also an acceptance that the behaviours associated with these skills are context specific. This book reviews current practice in using behavioural markers for assessing competence in crisis management. The differences between the assessment frameworks in which behavioural markers are currently being used for this assessment are discussed. This book presents a set of behavioural markers that can be used to assess competence in crisis management within the context of a merchant vessel s engine room control room. The book concludes that these behavioural markers can be used as a valid objective assessment framework for the assessment of competence in crisis management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of our increasingly VUCA world and with the proliferation of modern crises, crisis management has evolved into a key task area that is no longer critical only to the energy, aviation, and security sectors and neither is it only the work of appointed crisis managers. Beyond the traditional acute crises, there are creeping crises, looming crises and black swan events, and also crises that have multiple, differentiated and non-linear trajectories. What then are the structures and capabilities necessary for organisations and leaders to be prepared to face this diverse range of modern crisis situations? The book presents several key competencies that crisis leaders and managers should possess and develop for effective crisis management. For instance, leaders would have to possess digital and cross-cultural competence, embody adaptive authenticity, manage tasks, engage in collective sensemaking, display transformative and agile leadership, and manage misinformation. The genesis of the qualities entailed a literature review, opinion surveys administered to officers who manage crises in their roles, and interviews with leaders and incident managers, as well as discussions with subject matter experts on the topic of Crisis Leadership. This book offers practitioners a better understanding of essential crisis leadership qualities and practical recommendations for action and development. Beyond the crisis leader, the book will also highlight the importance of the crisis-ready organisation and network. The interplay between the crisis leader and the broader organisational and operating systems in shaping effective crisis management will be discussed, with implications for leaders and organisations in developing and enhancing the crisis ecosystem so that crises can be effectively prevented, managed and learned from.

Book Cultural Competency Training in a Global Society

Download or read book Cultural Competency Training in a Global Society written by Richard H. Dana and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural competence is more than an admirable goal: it is an essential skill set for mental health professionals working in a diverse global society marked by crisis and trauma. It is essential for clinicians to understand the intricate mix of history and self-concept, identity and tradition that are central not only for ameliorating psychological problems but to foster psychological health and well-being. As the definition of culture takes on broader meanings-at once embracing multiple identities and increasing globalization- Cultural Competency Training in a Global Society brings a vital perspective and practical understanding to clinical, counseling, and school psychologists, as well as to graduate students entering these fields. By describing a comprehensive training model for professional education and practice in the United States with ethnic minority groups, indigenous populations, immigrants, and refugees, this book has relevance for other multicultural societies because the implications are multidisciplinary in focus and potentially international in scope. The existing and emergent global multicultural populations described in this book represent the neglected human faces of economic globalization. Among the topics covered: Requirements for professional training in cultural competency. Research basis for cultural competency training. International resources and their usage in training and practice. Multicultural assessment in the service of intervention. Evaluating cultural competency training.
