He is the supreme subject of the whole library. Every several book gathers its value from its testimony to His person, His teaching, or His work. The perfection Of the whole is created by its unification in Him. The first four of its books chronicle His deeds, and His words, during the brief span of a lifetime, lasting for a generation. Book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Ewald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crises in the Early Church I have been asked to give a brief but adequate discussion of the crises in early Christian history, so that they could be understood by ministers, theological students, and laymen Who might be interested in the origins of their religion - a dis cussion founded on a study of the sources and of modern scholars. This little book is a modest attempt to meet that request. For the sake of those who Wish to verify statements made in the text and to carry on further studies, it has been necessary to add notes; but these have been made as short as possible, and it is hoped that they will not interfere with the pleasure of reading by those Who do not care for them. Brief biblio graphical lists Will be found in an appendix. In that appendix also I have taken occasion to add some information on points referred to in chap ters I and IV, namely, on the authenticity of the Great Commission and baptismal command (p. 160) and on that most interesting movement, Montanism (p. Book The World s Approaching Crisis Classic Reprint

Download or read book The World s Approaching Crisis Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Approaching Crisis In this book we are not to endeavor to set forth new doctrines, or new theories, but to speak of unfulfilled phophesies in the light of the Bible at this time of the closing of the sixth age of the world. Nothing so interested the prophets as the foreshowing of things to come. Peter tells us that they inquired and searched diligently, searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow." Daniels' whole soul was almost drawn out of him by the intensity of his interest, study, fasting and prayer with regard to what was foreshown him. But what is the temper of our modern theologians on the subject of prophecy! The common idea is that a man is a little beside himself, and departs from proper soberness if he ventures to give any serious attention to unfulfilled prophecy. Book The Sufferings of Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sufferings of Christ Classic Reprint written by Layman Layman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufferings of Christ The prevalent theory of the redeeming sufferings affirms that God is impassible, and therefore limits the sufferings of Christ to his manhood alone. This theory has pervaded Christendom, and stood the test of centuries; yet have we been forced, by scriptural proofs, to the conclusion that it is founded in error, and that the expiatory agonies of our Lord reached not only his humanity, but his very Godhead. That our inquiry is of importance, no Christian will doubt. We have sought in vain for any satisfactory arguments to sustain the prevalent theory. The pulpit, so far as our personal experience extends, has been almost silent on the theme. We have looked into such theological treatises as have fallen within our reach. They abound in reiterations of the averment, "God is impassible;" but, with very few and scanty exceptions, they stop short at the threshold of that specious, yet unsupported dogma. We have betaken ourselves to our Bible. The result of our scriptural investigations will appear in these sheets. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
