Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the humble backdrop of rural Scotland, a young Robert Burns toils tirelessly to build his new farmhouse, facing the hardships of rain-soaked journeys and manual labor in this semi-fictional biography to this Scottish literary legend. As he navigates the treacherous roads, the wheels of fate turn, unveiling the complexities of his life and loves. Book Breaking and Dissipation of Ocean Surface Waves

Download or read book Breaking and Dissipation of Ocean Surface Waves written by Alexander Babanin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-19 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave breaking represents one of the most interesting and challenging problems for fluid mechanics and physical oceanography. Over the last fifteen years our understanding has undergone a dramatic leap forward, and wave breaking has emerged as a process whose physics is clarified and quantified. Ocean wave breaking plays the primary role in the air-sea exchange of momentum, mass and heat, and it is of significant importance for ocean remote sensing, coastal and ocean engineering, navigation and other practical applications. This book outlines the state of the art in our understanding of wave breaking and presents the main outstanding problems. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in this topic, including researchers, modellers, forecasters, engineers and graduate students in physical oceanography, meteorology and ocean engineering.

Book Wave Kinematics and Environmental Forces

Download or read book Wave Kinematics and Environmental Forces written by Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In determining the response of offshore structures, it is of utmost importance to determine, in the most correct manner, all factors which contribute to the total force acting on these structures. Applying the Morison formula (Morison et. al. , 1950) to calculate forces on offshore slender structures, uncertainties related to the understanding of the wave climate, the hydrodynamic force coefficients and the kinematics of ocean waves represent the most important contributions to the uncertainties in the prediction of the total forces on these structures (Haver and Gudmestad, 1992). Traditional calculation of forces on offshore structures involves the use of regular waves with the following non-linearities inco1porated use of regular wave theories inco1porating higher order terms use of Morison equation having a nonlinear drag term inclusion of the effect of the free surface by integrating all contributions to total forces and moments from the sea floor to the free surface of the waves In order to describe the sea more realistically, the ocean surface is to be described as an irregular sea surface represented by its energy spectrum. The associated decomposition of the sea surface is given as a linear sum of linear waves. The total force is found by integrating the contribution from all components in the wave spectrum to the free surface. The kinematics of each component must therefore be determined.

Book Sediment Transport Mechanisms In Coastal Environments And Rivers Euromech 310

Download or read book Sediment Transport Mechanisms In Coastal Environments And Rivers Euromech 310 written by John F A Sleath and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-12-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain papers by some of the world's leading experts in the analytical and numerical modelling of sediment transport, its measurement on site and in the laboratory, river and coastal morphology, and similar issues. These topics are of fundamental importance in many areas (such as the silting or erosion of coasts and rivers, and the design of fluvial or coastal structures) and should consequently be of interest to a wide audience in engineering, geology and related disciplines.

Book Asian And Pacific Coasts 2011 Proceedings Of The 6th International Conference

Download or read book Asian And Pacific Coasts 2011 Proceedings Of The 6th International Conference written by Joseph Hun-wei Lee and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011-11-24 with total page 2187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a compilation of papers presented at the 6th International Conference on Asian and Pacific Coasts (APAC2011) held on December 14-16, 2011 in Hong Kong, China. It contains more than 200 articles addressing a wide spectrum of issues, ranging from conventional coastal engineering problems (such as wave hydrodynamics and sediment transport) to issues of contemporary interest (such as tsunami, coastal development, climate change and seawater level rise, shoreline protection, marine energy, nearshore ecology, oil spill, etc.). Authors present their experiences in tackling these problems, by means of theoretical modeling, numerical simulation, laboratory and field observations, with an aim to advance fundamental understanding of the controlling mechanisms, as well as to develop solutions for practical designs. This volume serves to promote technological progress and activities, technical knowledge transfer and cooperation on an international scale.

Book Ocean Engineering Mechanics

Download or read book Ocean Engineering Mechanics written by Michael E. McCormick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-12 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean Engineering Mechanics provides an introduction to water waves and wave-structure interactions for fixed and floating bodies. Linear and nonlinear regular waves are thoroughly discussed, and the methods of determining the averaged properties of random waves are presented. With this foundation in wave mechanics, applications to engineering situations in the coastal zone are then presented. This introduction to the coastal engineering aspects of wave mechanics includes an introduction to shore protection. Covered within are also the basics of wave-structure interactions for situations involving ridged structures, compliant structures, and floating bodies in regular and random seas. The final chapters deal with the various analytical methods available for the engineering analyses of wave-induced forces and motions of floating and compliant structures in regular and random seas. An introduction to the soil-structure interactions is also included. The book can be used for both introductory and advanced courses in ocean engineering mechanics.
