Although it is not known how, the gas ignited and flames spread to the nearby build ings. Crescent City's volunteer firemen arrived on the scene shortly there after, pouring water on the burning buildings and derailed cars. At this point they believed that they could keep the fire under control and kept positions close to the fire. However, an Illinois State Police sergeant learned that the tank cars contained propane, a fact previously unknown to the firemen.
