Book Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials 2

Download or read book Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials 2 written by A.C.F. Cocks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials-l was published in 1989 as the proceedings of a Colloquium held in Leicester in the summer of 1988. The Colloquium examined the creep response of a wide range of materials, including metals, engineering ceramics and ice, with the aim of determining similarities in the response of these materials and the way in which their behaviour is modelled. The proceedings were structured so as nature of the Colloquium, with papers to reflect the interdisciplinary grouped together largely on the basis of the phenomena being examined, rather than by class of material. Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials-2 was held in Leicester in Septem ber 1991 to discuss advances made in our understanding of the response of creep brittle materials since the first Colloquium. The scope of the Colloquium was extended to include mineral salts, concrete and com posite systems. These proceedings are once more structured so that the reader can readily compare the response of different material systems and evaluate the suitability of the range of models presented to the materials he is interested in. In fact a number of papers directly compare the of a range of different materials with the aim of identifying behaviour general strategies for the testing and modelling of creeping materials.

Book Modelling of Crack Growth in Single Crystal Nickel Base Superalloys

Download or read book Modelling of Crack Growth in Single Crystal Nickel Base Superalloys written by Christian Busse and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation was produced at the Division of Solid Mechanics at Linköping University and is part of a research project, which comprises modelling, microstructure investigations and material testing of cast nickel-base superalloys. The main objective of this work was to deepen the understanding of the fracture behaviour of single-crystal nickel-base superalloys and to develop a model to predict the fatigue crack growth behaviour. Frequently, crack growth in these materials has been observed to follow one of two distinct cracking modes; Mode I like cracking perpendicular to the loading direction or crystallographic crack growth on the octahedral {111}-planes, where the latter is associated with an increased fatigue crack growth rate. Thus, it is of major importance to account for this behaviour in component life prediction. Consequently, a model for the prediction of the transition of cracking modes and the correct active crystallographic plane, i.e. the crack path, and the crystallographic crack growth rate has been developed. This model is based on the evaluation of appropriate crack driving forces using three-dimensional finite-element simulations. A special focus was given towards the influence of the crystallographic orientation on the fracture behaviour. Further, a model to incorporate residual stresses in the crack growth modelling is presented. All modelling work is calibrated and validated by experiments on different specimen geometries with different crystallographic orientations. This dissertation consists of two parts, where Part I gives an introduction and background to the field of research, while Part II consists of six appended papers.

Book Sensitivity of the Creep Rupture Properties of Nickel Base Superalloy Sheet to Sharp Edge Notches in the Temperature Range of 1000 Deg 1400 Deg F

Download or read book Sensitivity of the Creep Rupture Properties of Nickel Base Superalloy Sheet to Sharp Edge Notches in the Temperature Range of 1000 Deg 1400 Deg F written by and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations are now in progress to evaluate the severe time- dependent, edge-notch sensitivity known to occur in thin sheet nickel-base superalloys exposed under stress at 1000 and 1200F. Studies of Rend 41, Waspaloy and Inconel 718, over a wide range of heat-treated conditions, has served to define the scope of this problem in 0. 026-inch thick sheet. In addition, exploratory data have been obtained on the influence of notch acuity and sheet thickness on the notch sensitivity. Both smooth and edge-notched specimens fractured by the initiation and growth of intergranular cracks, followed by abrupt transgranular fracture due to the increase in stress caused by creep cracking. Analysis of these processes showed that the degree of notch sensitivity was strongly dependent upon the effect of the notches on the time required for the initiation of the creep crack and the early stages of its growth. There were some differences among alloys and within an alloy with heat treatment and test temperature. The notch sensitivity was not exhibited for the testing time periods considered when sheet thickness was increased from 0.026- to 0.050-inch. This, together with other considerations, suggests that the stress and strain state is a major factor. Until this is understood, however, it is not possible to correlate notch sensitive behavior with precise microstructural features or mechanical properties.

Book The Fracture Morphology of Nickel Base Superalloys Tested in Fatigue and Creep Fatigue at 650 C

Download or read book The Fracture Morphology of Nickel Base Superalloys Tested in Fatigue and Creep Fatigue at 650 C written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fracture surfaces of compact tension specimens from seven nickel-base superalloys fatigue tested at 650 C were studied by scanning electron microscopy and optical metallography to determine the nature and morphology of the crack surface in the region of stable growth. Crack propagation testing was performed as part of an earlier study at 650 C in air using a 0.33 Hz fatigue cycle and a creep-fatigue cycle incorporating a 900 second dwell at maximum load. In fatigue, alloys with a grain size greater than 20 micrometers, HIP Astroloy, Waspaloy, and MERL 76, exhibited transgranular fracture. MERL 76 also displayed numerous fracture sites which were associated with boundaries of prior powder particles. The two high strength, fine grain alloys, IN 100 and NASA IIB-7, exhibited intergranular fracture. Rene 95 and HIP plus forged Astroloy displayed a mixed failure mode that was transgranular in the coarse grains and intergranular in the fine grains. Under creep-fatigue conditions, fracture was found to be predominantly intergranular in all seven alloys. Gayda, J. and Miner, R. V. Glenn Research Center NASA-TM-81740, E-793
