Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of Mahayana Buddhism, particularly in Japan, and possible ties to Gnosticism and early Christianity. Includes two translated texts from the Nichiren school. This is a scholarly study of the evolution of Mahayana Buddhism in Japan. Lloyd was particularly interested in how Eastern religions interacted with those in the west. A Christian clergyman and long-time resident in Japan at the turn of the 20th century, Arthur Lloyd felt that Buddhism has much in common with Christianity, including possible historical links. In this book he discusses doctrinal and narrative parallels between Mahayana Buddhism and early Christian, Gnostic, and Manichean beliefs.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed of Half Japan: Historical Sketches of Japanese Buddhism I can only plead for my book that it is the work of a pioneer, and every pioneer knows that his labours must necessarily be crude and imperfect. I foresee all the strictures that criticism will pass upon my labours, and shall be more than content if what I have written stimulates others to further research. More should have been said about the lives and teachings of Honen, Shinran, and other leaders of the Jodo or Pure Land sects. The omission is due to the fact that I have already dealt with these thinkers in a monograph entitled u Shinran and His Work," which I published in Tokyo last year.. Even with these omissions I fear this book will seem rather bulky. My best thanks are due to the Master of Peterhouse, who has put himself to much trouble on my behalf. Book National Faith Of Japan

Download or read book National Faith Of Japan written by Holtom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justification for the writing of this book lies in the twofold fact of the existence of a practically open field and the special importance of a knowledge of Shinto in reaching an adequate understanding of contemporary Japan—politically, socially and religiously. Since the publication in 1905 of W. G. Aston's notable work, Shinto, The Way of the Gods, no study of this subject, aiming at comprehensiveness of design, has appeared in the English language. Special aspects have been dealt with by different writers but no attempt at a historical survey such as would place the salient facts of the total situation in the hands of the serious Western student of Oriental affairs has been made. Aston's book is still standard but it is not easy to procure and deals mainly with the Old Shinto of the classical age. It antedates some of the most important modern developments. The present volume is offered in the humble hope that it may assist in the meeting of a genuine need in the sphere of interest of which it treats. First Published in 1996. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an Informa company.
