Book The Creed of Buddha Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Creed of Buddha Classic Reprint written by Edmond Gore Alexander Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed of Buddha That the problem has not yet been even ap proximately solved is my sincere conviction. I have read many treatises on Buddhism; but I have yet to find the writer who, when expounding the philosophy (as distinguished from the ethical system) of Buddha, teaches as one having au thority and not as the Scribes. The indisputable fact that Buddha himself kept silence with regard to the ultimate realities and ultimate issues of life, shows that the task of interpreting his creed is one for criticism (in the widest and deepest sense of the word) rather than for scholarship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed of Buddha As I do not know a word of Pâli or any other Eastern language, I owe a debt of gratitude to those distinguished scholars whose translations of the Buddhist scriptures and expositions of the teaching of Buddhism have made it possible for me to attempt to interpret the creed of Buddha. If I have found their treatises less helpful and less illuminative than their translations, the reason is, no doubt, that the qualities which make a man a successful scholar differ widely from those which might enable him to enter, with subtle sympathy and imaginative insight, into the thoughts of a great Teacher. Book The Way of the Buddha Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Way of the Buddha Classic Reprint written by Herbert Baynes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way of the Buddha The object of this little book is to give the reader a succinct account of an Eastern sage whose doctrine of the Path has been accepted by millions of the human race, and whose influ ence is still felt at the ends of the earth. What is generally understood by Buddhism will be found to differ greatly from the way of emancipation here set forth. And for this reason Unlike all other religions, Buddhism began with out God and without prayer, and ended in be coming a most elaborate system of polytheism with a superstitious multiplication of collects. Up to the time of Asoka, about 250 b.o., it seems to have remained comparatively pure; but by the thirteenth century a.d., when the revival of Brahmanism drove it from India, it had assumed in other countries so many new features as to be hardly recognisable. Nor should this be a matter for great surprise. When an essentially Aryan religion or system of philosophy is transplanted to Turanian lands it is not to be expected that it will remain unchanged. The contrast between the teaching of the Christ and of His apostles, and the Christianity of Rome in the Middle Ages is indeed great, but the difference between the Buddhism of Tibet and the Dharma of Sakya Muni 1s greater still. The history of the faith In all the lands m which it has taken root is far too vast a subject for our present purpose, but a general outline of its rise and fall in Aryavarta. Book The Story of Buddhism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Buddhism Classic Reprint written by K. J. Saunders and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Buddhism Buddhism is being eagerly studied in the West, and there is no dearth of books upon it. Yet a brief history of its amazing developments may prove useful in helping those who are not experts to a sane view Of it, and to a knowledge alike of its strength and of its weakness. It is for such readers that this little book has been written it avoids technicalities as far as possible, and ignores many great problems, seeking to give a Simple yet accurate and sympathetic account of the religion Of Gautama Buddha and its developments. Six years spent in close contact with the peoples of Burma and Ceylon have convinced me that what ever it may have done in its Golden Age, and strong as its hold still is, the Buddhism of today in all its many forms is almost powerless to effect either individual or social regeneration. I believe that a sympathetic and open-minded study of it and its history will convince the student that this is so, and will send the Christian back to the study of his own religion with a new understanding of it and a new appreciation of its wonderful power to meet human needs and to satisfy human aspirations. Book The Legends and Theories of the Buddhists Compared With History and Science

Download or read book The Legends and Theories of the Buddhists Compared With History and Science written by R. Spence Hardy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Legends and Theories of the Buddhists Compared With History and Science: With Introductory Notices of the Life and System of Gotama Buddha The first edition of this work was published in the island of Ceylon. Its principal aim was, to reveal to the adherents of the system the errors it contains; but the original form is retained, as the doctrines here attri buted to Buddha have not been controverted, so far as I can learn, by 'any of the priests; though, of course, they repudiate the inferences I have drawn from them. We are thus warranted in concluding, that they may be received as a faithful and trustworthy exposition of this wide-spread creed; and it is the more necessary to notice this fact, as there are many things in them that are con trary to the teachings on this subject of several authors of great name in western literature. The supporters of Protestant missions will also learn in what manner and spirit their agents are conducting the great controversy, that must increase in magnitude and moment, until the truth has universally prevailed throughout the realm of India; and a lesson may be learnt, of no small sigui ficance, as to the acquirements, the mental furnishing, requisite in the men who are chosen to do battle, in this onslaught upon the most formidable of all the superstitions that oppose the spread of the Gospel of the Son of God. Book Outlines of Mah y na Buddhism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Mah y na Buddhism Classic Reprint written by Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Mahayana Buddhism The object of this book is twofold: (i) To refute the many wrong opinions which are entertained by Western critics concerning the fundamental teachings of Mahayana Buddhism; (2) To awake interest among scholars of comparative religion in the development of the religious sentiment and faith as exemplified by the growth of one of the most powerful spiritual forces in the world. The book is therefore at once popular and scholarly. It is popular in the sense that it tries to expose the fallacy of the general attitude assumed by other religionists towards Mahayanism. It aims to be scholarly, on the other hand, when it endeavors to expound some of the most salient features of the doctrine, historically and systematically. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive annotation of more than 10.000 words about the history and basics of Buddhism, written by Thomas William Rhys Davids * an interactive table-of-contents * perfect formatting for electronic reading devices The author of " The Creed of Buddha " can safely say that no better exposition of Buddhism has ever been given to the world. It is sympathetic, it is scholarly, and it is complete. Between east and west, says the author, a gulf has been fixed, a gulf created by basic ideas, hollowed out by the erosive action of speculative thought. The Western mind takes for granted the reality of outward things. The Eastern mind attributes the only reality to the soul. All else is maya, illusion. And there are very few that can bridge thatgulf. In the East, where the soul is the supreme and fundamental reality, the identification of God with the world-soul, or soul of universal Mature, is the outcome of a movement of thought which is at once natural and logical. This divine soul is the only real existence: by comparison with it all outward things are shadows, and all inward things, so far as they hold aloof from the all-embracing consciousness, are dreams. The worship of the supernatural, such as is to be found in Christianity, often ends in the despiritualization of Nature. which becomes merely the world without and therefore opposed to the Supernatural, which becomes the dwelling place of God .

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buddha: His Life, His Doctrine, His Order The history of the Buddhist faith begins with a band of mendicant monks who gathered round the person of Gotama, the Buddha, in the country bordering on the Ganges, about five hundred years before the commencement of the Christian era. What bound them together and gave a stamp to their simple and earnest world of thought, was the deeply felt and clearly and sternly expressed consciousness, that all earthly existence is full of sorrow, and that the only deliverance from sorrow is in renunciation of the world and eternal rest. An itinerant teacher and his itinerant followers, not unlike those bands, who in later times bore through Galilee the tidings: the kingdom of heaven is at hand, went through the realms of India with the burden of sorrow and death, and the announcement: open ye your ears; the deliverance from death is found.
