In Canada, the first adherents gathered in Quebec; the caisses populaires were begun by Alphonse Desjardins in 1900. At a recent congress of the World Council of Credit Unions, in Vancouver, B.C. over 2,000 delegates from 85 countries represented 36,000 credit unions with 90 million members and $380 billion (US) is assets. As this book shows, growth has not always been easy; credit unions around the world took hold in a variety of social, political and cultural systems.

Book The Credit Union World

Download or read book The Credit Union World written by Wendell V. Fountain and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a remarkable book. It is the real life story of a pilot of the famed 91st Bomb Group, the Memphis Belle Group, in World War II, and the missions flown in that Group by the author and his comrades. It follows him from the time his B-17 was shot down over the German-French border, he was rescued and hidden by villagers in the tiny village of Baslieuse, then escaped through a Europe occupied by Nazi forces desperate to escape pursuing Allied armies. The book chronicles, in fascinating detail, the life and training of those young men who made up the heroic 8th Air Force, and describes the affectionate relationship often maintained by their crews with that most famed heavy bomber of all time, the fabled B-17. It includes some of the most tragic stories as well as some of the wryest humor ever written about combat groups. A heavy bomb group consists of 36 heavy bombers. The 91st lost 207 planes during its WWII combat time 32 during the author''s flight tenure. Dr. Anderson uses the words of the extraordinary crews of those planes to describe the training they absorbed, the missions they flew, the results they achieved, the tragedy of watching their planes explode and their friends die, and the heroism that brought so many near fatally damaged planes home with their dead and wounded crews. This is also a story of growing up in pre-war America, and of the growth and

Book Credit Unions

Download or read book Credit Unions written by Jack Dublin and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CREDIT UNIONS have had phenomenal growth all over the world during the past generation, but many people still do not know what they are. Credit unions are neither banks nor savings-and-loan associations. Although they are in the moneymaking business and do make money, they are genuine cooperatives, set up for the purposes of helping the community as well as the individual. This book presents the basic philosophy of the credit union movement and shows how it is applied today in credit unions throughout the world. In direct and concrete language Mr. Dublin describes how a credit union should and should not operate. This book will serve as a handbook for students, newly elected credit union officials, employees, and experienced technicians in credit union work around the world. Chapters include: Who Can Organize a Credit Union, Credit Union Management, Responsibilities and Qualities of Credit Union Officers, Leagues, CUNA International and Their Affiliates, Credit Union Bookkeeping and the Financial Statement.

Book Community Capital

Download or read book Community Capital written by Clifford Rosenthal and published by . This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clifford Rosenthal provides a 10,000-foot overview and historical context of the community development credit union (CDCU) movement, while scrutinizing his journey as a white man leading a predominantly non-white organization. In his quest for community-controlled capital, he raised directly or indirectly through his advocacy for $100 million in investments in low-income credit unions; and pioneering the community development financial institutions (CDFI) movement. His 40-year year career took Rosenthal from neighborhood co-op organizer, to credit union builder, then association president, and finally federal policymaker. Rosenthal writes as a credit union practitioner shaped by his training as a Russian historian and translator. More "co-conspirator" than ally, Rosenthal is a white man battling for capital and equity in communities of color, while acknowledging and confronting his own shortcomings as a leader. In contrast, Michael McCray gives a harrowing insider's account as a participant/eyewitness to history. McCray is a Black man fighting a federal regulator, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), in a white man's world. He brings "receipts"-- unique access to secret transcripts, doctored financial reports, and federal court documents which undergird a compelling argument that the regulator has mistreated small credit unions, especially in minority communities. McCray takes the reader behind closed doors at an NCUA board meeting and inside the courtroom as a small credit union fights for its life against federal attorneys and the Justice Department. McCray delivers a dramatic first-person account with primary source documents and forensic insights on the landmark KAPFCU v NCUA federal court case. Justifiably jaundiced, McCray's compelling writing style takes the readers on an inside-the-car, roller-coaster ride through a regulatory "Alice in Wonderland."Rosenthal is a historian, and McCray is a whistleblower. Together, we guide the reader through a race-tinted, bifocal examination of the long and ongoing struggle to redress economic inequity. If we have succeeded, the reader will learn not only about the barriers to DEI-Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion-at the highest level of government, but gain a better understanding of the pivotal role Black organizations like the Divine Nine and Black churches play in bringing providing capital access to marginalized communities.
