Download or read book The Crisis and the Kingdom written by E. Philip Davis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing global financial crisis was not simply the fault of the financial sector. Bankers, households, and governments had all entered a spiral of greed, selfishness, and impatience in pursuit of their respective aims of higher remuneration, greater consumption, and enhanced popularity. The outcome, besides costly bank bailouts, has been rising private and public debt and stagnant economies. Economics, the ruling paradigm in today's society, can explain their motivation of self-interest but not the underlying irrationality of their behavior. Taking a view from Scripture, Philip Davis critiques the overall aims of individuals, as assumed by economics--wealth, consumption, and power--in contrast to Jesus' proclamation of the kingdom of God, the love for God and neighbor, and responsible stewardship of resources. In doing so, he aims to equip Christians to better understand the crisis from a kingdom perspective, to provide the church with a distinctive voice in these troubled times, and to press for radical Christian solutions to address the underlying difficulties. This little book aims to redress the gap in Christians' understanding that led the theologian Jurgen Moltmann to remark trenchantly, "The neglect of economics is a wound in the side of the church."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where is Western culture going? What should Christians think about it? Those who already ask these questions often come up with confused answers. Those who do not are, arguably, living in a fool's paradise (or a fool's hell.) In this second edition of Subversive Christianity, Brian Walsh returns to the themes of cultural discernment that he unpacked more than twenty years ago. In a new Postscript, Walsh revisits Francis Fukuyama, Bruce Cockburn, and the prophet Jeremiah and asks, Where are we now? In light of 9/11 and the world economic crisis of 2008, how do we discern the times, and what does that discernment tell us about the calling of the church?

Download or read book From Credit Crunch to Pure Prosperity written by Maggy Whitehouse and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11-19 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every news bulletin now speaks of the Credit Crunch and recession. What if you didn't have to experience either? If you use the spiritual laws of prosperity, you do not. Everything we see and hear is filtered through the ego (the reticular activating system of the brain) so as soon as we believe something, we then find more and more evidence of the truth._ This book offers simple, practical advice and techniques on how to turn around your mind-set so that outside conditions can no longer affect you. It is humorous, wise and consistent, makes no fake promises and delivers what it promises. If you do the work suggested, your life will become happier and more prosperous. Maggy's own life-experience includes widowhood and divorce, out-facing an eight-foot barracuda, riding on the back of a Bengal Tiger; being made redundant, surviving the Dotcom crash, emigrating twice in one year and bringing the first dog to the UK from the USA on Passports for Pets before it was technically possible to do so.

Book Searching For Christianity

Download or read book Searching For Christianity written by Norman Thornton and published by Arena books. This book was released on 2011-07-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a multi-purpose and inter-denominational approach, this is a book addressed to all Christians, who in this sceptical age, may be experiencing a religious crisis or doubts as to their commitment to Christ's teaching and Revelation. Whilst this book is written from the basis of conviction, it insists on demonstrating factual evidence. Nothing is presented which is contrary to the reason of the ordinary man or woman in arguing the basis of religious truth. With this in mind, the reader is taken through the Bible, from the book of Genesis onwards, and answers are offered for many of those difficult questions which usually arouse anxiety in the minds of the faithful from time to time. In addition, the book offers questions and discussion topics at the conclusion of each chapter. This is an ideal handbook which religious teachers and ministers of all denominations will find helpful, written by a fully-qualified scholar holding a doctorate in theological studies.
