Book The Psychology of Imagination

Download or read book The Psychology of Imagination written by Brady Wagoner and published by IAP. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new approach to imagination which brings its emotional, social, cultural, contextual and existential characteristics to the fore. Fantasy and imagination are understood as the human capacity to distance oneself from the here?and?now situation in order to return to it with new possibilities. To do this we use social?cultural means (e.g. language, stories, art, images, etc.) to conceive of imaginary scenarios, some of which may become real. Imagination is involved in every situation of our lives, though to different degrees. Sometimes this process can lead to concrete products (e.g., artistic works) that can be picked up and used by others for the purposes of their imagining. Imagination is not seen here as an isolated cognitive faculty but as the means by which people anticipate and constructively move towards an indeterminate future. It is in this process of living forward with the help of imagination that novelty appears and social change becomes possible. This book offers a conceptual history of imagination, an array of theoretical approaches, imagination’s use in psychologist’s thinking and a number of new research areas. Its aim is to offer a re?enchantment of the concept of imagination and the discipline of psychology more generally.

Book The Creative Imagination

  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book The Creative Imagination written by James Engell and published by Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a work of astonishing intellectual range, James Engell traces the evolution of the creative imagination, from its emergence in British empirical thought through its flowering in Romantic art and literature. The notion of a creative imagination, Engell shows, was the most powerful and important development of the eighteenth century. It grew simultaneously in literature, criticism, philosophy, psychology, religion, and science, attracting such diverse minds as Hobbes, Addison, Gerard, Goethe, Kant, and Coleridge. Indeed, rather than discussing merely the abstract notion of the imagination, Engell examines the community of thinkers, especially in England and Germany, who joined to pursue and develop what became the most fascinating and suggestive concept of modern Western thought. For as the imagination became the dominant subject of literature, its meanings multiplied. Finally it came to be seen as the crown of artistic creation and as the mediator in the ongoing dialectic between matter and spirit, materialism and transcendentalism.

Book Essay on the Creative Imagination

Book excerpt: Theodule-Armand Ribot (1839-1916), French psychologist, was born at Guingamp, and educated at the Lycee de St. Brieuc. He was admitted to the Ecole Normale Superieure in 1862. His thesis for his doctors degree, Heredite: Etude Psychologique (1875), was his most important and best known book. In his work on La Psychologie Anglaise Contemporaine: l Ecole Experimentale (1870), he showed his sympathy with the sensationalist school, and again in his translation of Herbert Spencer s Principles of Psychology. Besides numerous articles, he wrote on Arthur Schopenhauer, (Philosophie de Schopenhauer, 1874), and on the contemporary psychology of Germany (La Psychologie Allemande Contemporaine, 1879), also four little monographs on Les Maladies de la Memoire (1881); De la Volonte (1883); De la Personnalite (1885); and La Psychologie de l Attention (1888), which supplied useful data to the study of mental illness. In 1885 he gave a course of lectures on Experimental Psychology at the Sorbonne, and in 1888 was appointed professor of that subject at the College of France.
