Not one of the criticisms, in this country, of a recent work of fiction, Helbeek of Bannisdale, defined the author' s purpose and general plan of development; yet the closing scene, the death of the heroine by drowning, cannot be justified without reference to the motif of the story. There is in print no satisfactory treatment of fiction as an art; scholarship and critical opinion on the subject are inchoate; even among institutions of learning wherein courses of instruction on this topic are given, there is little agreement. In some, no better device has been hit upon than the application of accepted theories of dramatic structure to the study of the novel; in others, the history of fiction forms the subject-matter of study, and, incidentally, some attention is given to characteristics and schools. It follows as a corollary and evident deduca tion that, these propositions once admitted, those who follow and profess the Art of Fiction must be recognized as artists, in the strictest sense of the word, just as much as those who have delighted and elevated mankind by music and painting; and that the great Masters of Fiction must be placed on the same level as the great Masters in the other Arts. In other words, I mean that where the highest point, or what seems the highest point, possible in this Art is touched, the man who has reached it is one of the world's greatest men. I cannot suppose that there are any in this room who would refuse to admit these propositions; on the contrary, they will seem to most here self-evident yet the application of theory to practice, of principle to persons, may be more difficult. For instance, so boundless is the admiration for great Masters such as Raphael or Mozart, that if one were to propose that Thackeray should be placed beside them, on the same level, and as an equal, there would be felt by most a certain shock. I am not suggesting that the art of Thackeray is to be compared with that of Raphael, or that there is any similarity in the work of the two men I only say that, Fiction being one Art, and Painting another and a sister Art. It cannot fail to be directed towards the more formal elements in that art, while criticism of individual novelists can deal more adequately with the life they are trying to create. A book of this sort is doomed to appear excessively schematic, and some people may object that profitable things can be said about this or that novel, but hardly about the Novel; for as Lawrence said: 'all rules of construction hold good only for novels that are copies of other novels'. That a great many things cannot be said in a book of this sort must be obvious to anyone who has ever given any thought to the novel. One can isolate for the purpose of analysis such an element as Plot, for instance but in many novels that do not lack unity, the principle of cohesion is something we cannot call Plot, something to which we cannot do justice except in individual studies of these books or of their authors. But though much must be left unsaid, something' can be said and a generalization may be useful even if it does not cover every instance. One of the purposes of such an examina tion is to help writers; and it is very difficult indeed to help writers except over formal problems. The only useful help many writers have ever given or received has been over small points such as punctuation, or the phrasing of a sentence. The present book deals with other aspects of the novel than those dealt with in my former treatise. It aspires only to an internal consistency. I believe that the chief deficiency in most works on fiction technique is that the author unconsciously has slipped from the viewpoint of a writer of a story to that of a reader. Now a reader without intention to try his own hand at the game is not playing fair in studying technique, and a book on technique has no business to entertain him. Accordingly, I have striven to keep to the viewpoint of one who seeks to learn how to write stories, and have made no attempt to analyze the work of masters of fiction for the sake of the analysis alone. Such analysis is interesting to make, and also interesting to read, but it is not directly profitable to the writer.
