Book excerpt: Expose your child to the Greatest Stories ever told illuminated by some fo the greatest art ever produced. The Bible is the most important book your kids will ever read; augment their first impression by pairing it with classic works of art that don't simply illustrate but illuminate its eternal truths. Great text deserves great art. The Middle Ages produced an abundance of beautiful Christian art, most of which we never see today. Hidden away in libraries and museum basements are thousands of medieval manuscripts, beautifully-illustrated with hand-painted images. Most are religious in content like Psalters (a collection of Psalms), Books of Hours (a collection of devotional texts, prayers and Psalms), Gospels, as well as Bibles. Some are secular, like bestiaries and chronicles. All of them contain priceless images of Biblical stories, parables and poetry. In Creation of the World I have illustrated the first story in Genesis with some of these artworks. Homeschoolers, Sunday School teachers, moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas will appreciate the significance of these paintings and their students and children will enjoy their vibrance, charm and captivating details. Here are some examples of what your children will learn: The seven-day order of creation. How God is portrayed in medieval art. What different type of halos signify. The angelic hierarchy What is a Globus Cruciger? Why does God often hold calipers? How to recognize the sign of blessing. What a unicorn represents in medieval art. Why God doesn't smile in medieval art. But serious art does not mean dull art. In this book trees talk, animals comment on their own creation and God's toes explain the ancients' reverence for the number seven. These fun, but reverent, talk bubbles and hide-and-seek games (can you find a hidden snail on each page?) will delight children's curiosity and sense of fun, while the faithful, rhyming text and carefully-chosen art will delight their minds and tune their souls to recognize what Augustine called "Wisdom that was not made, but is now what it always was and ever shall be."

Book Made From This Earth

Download or read book Made From This Earth written by Vera Norwood and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad sweep of environmental and ecological history has until now been written and understood in predominantly male terms. In Made From This Earth, Vera Norwood explores the relationship of women to the natural environment through the work of writers, illustrators, landscape and garden designers, ornithologists, botanists, biologists, and conservationists. Norwood begins by showing that the study and promotion of botany was an activity deemed appropriate for women in the early 1800s. After highlighting the work of nineteenth-century scientific illustrators and garden designers, she focuses on nature's advocates such as Rachel Carson and Dian Fossey who differed strongly with men on both women's "nature" and the value of the natural world. These women challenged the dominant, male-controlled ideologies, often framing their critique with reference to values arising from the female experience. Norwood concludes with an analysis of the utopian solutions posed by ecofeminists, the most recent group of women to contest men over the meaning and value of nature.

Book excerpt: The notion of the frame in art can refer not only to a material frame bordering an image, but also to a conceptual frame. Both meanings are essential to how the work is perceived. In Framing Russian Art, art historian Oleg Tarasov investigates the role of the frame in its literal function of demarcating a work of art and in its conceptual function affectingthe understanding of what is seen. The first part of the book is dedicated to the framework of the Russian icon. Here, Tarasov explores the historical and cultural meanings of the icon’s,setting, and of the iconostasis. Tarasov’s study then moves through Russian and European art from ancient times to the twentieth century, including abstract art and Suprematism. Along the way, Tarasov pays special attention to the Russian baroque period and the famous nineteenth century Russian battle painter Vasily Vereshchagin. This enlightening account of the cultural phenomenon of the frame and its ever-changing functions will appeal to students and scholars of Russian art history.
